The zone was again our downfall. Thankfully, we started attacking it in the second half and played much better. We need to remember this when we play UMD.

The Northwestern guy hit the nail on the head in his presser after the game. He said he was happy with the defense......but only because our shots didn't fall. He said he saw WAY too many open shots from players that he would consider to be the best shooters on our team, and with that, he wasn't happy. That tells me a few things:
1. Our shooters weren't on tonight........Wood, CJ, etc.....just nothing 2. Sid knows offense....and he knows how to get open shots for our players, even when the talent isn't really there. 3. Open shots but not knocking them down, you can't blame that on the coach.
On a different note......im really disappointed in what i saw of scott wood tonight. I expected him to be a zone buster of sorts....a guy we could have USED desperately tonight. Going 0-fer was not what i ever expected from him. However.......freshman, first time on television, etc....i'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. 12/2/2009 2:49:18 AM |

Also this team has HUGE offensive problems. Nobody can attack the hoop." |
from what ive seen, hes not completely useless out on the floor any time other than when he's jacking up 3s like most 3 point specialists
the problem is that he's sucked ass at shooting 3s since the real season started. if the white dude you bring in to shoot 3s cant shoot then yea, he's gunna suck12/2/2009 3:40:42 AM |

while it is really unfortunate that wood isn't hitting his shots, i'm not really all that surprised. as someone already mentioned he went 4-4 in reynolds. which is in affect like a bigger high school gym. as soon as we moved to the rbc center he started having trouble. he's probably star struck with the huge arena (even though it's been mostly empty thus far).
wood was only a three star. 5 stars and to a lesser degree 4 stars are the only ones who are really expected to adapt and make an impact to the college game quickly. wood spent his high school career being guarded by people shorter than him. it's got to be frustrating coming in and being guarded by someone equaling your stature. he will come around, as long as he doesn't stop shooting. hopefully sid is telling him to keep pulling the trigger.
someone also mentioned that we need to practice in the rbc. i couldn't possibly agree more. it's unfortunate that we randomly go into a giant arena to play our games while practicing in a much much smaller facility. 12/2/2009 7:29:41 AM |

talkin to some of the former players they said it's basically like we're playing an away game every game or it at least makes every game like a neutral site. also, the rbc really sucks when we don't fill it up.12/2/2009 4:07:23 PM |

is that supposed to be sarcastic? Don't fuckin mock me because you're an idiot that doesn't know a basketball from a football. We were 3rd in the fuckin league last year in either FG% or ppg, i can't remember which......either way, that proves im not being "sarcastic". Sid gets us open shots(did you even WATCH the fuckin game?)........nobody has knocked them down though.12/2/2009 4:12:47 PM |

I think we were thinking too hard about how to beat the zone. There were a lot of times when one of our guys could have easily pump faked, sidestepped, and taken a wide open 2-point jumper. But I think we overthought things like robots on some "if the help comes from here, pass it this way" instead of just playing basketball
and obvious going 2/15 or whatever from behind the arc didnt help

I'll remind people that Wood actually played really good D last night which surprised me a lot. He also apparently locked down New Orleans leading scorer and held him to 4 points.
IMO, thats a huge advantage, because he's not completely useless when he's not hitting his shots, which is what everyone thought he would be. 12/2/2009 5:56:52 PM |

Guard rule #1: Dont pick up your dribble. Last night, our guards picked it up 30 ft from the basket and were stuck making difficult passes which led to turnovers. 12/2/2009 6:21:35 PM |

they didn't have anywhere to go. you can't blame the guards for picking up their drib against a halfcourt zone trap when nobody is flashing to the middle of the floor to catch a pass. there was nowhere to go. we were not organized at all against that press. we played offense as if we were going up against a regular man to man defense.12/2/2009 6:31:55 PM |

^Wrong. The only way to beat a press or any kind of defense is to keep your dribble alive. The minute you pick up your dribble, your dead. You are no longer an offensive threat. Kids learn that in 9 yr old ball at the Y!
Point #2: if the ball handler picks up his dribble, someones got to come to him to help.
When a half court press comes at us, we have the deer in the headlights look....we've have had this look since Engin left. Even worse is that we've got guards who actually go airborn to make a pass!!! Once you jump, you've got no where to go. Use your body to create a passing lane. Dont jump up and lob the ball...thats the worst possible thing you can do. 12/2/2009 8:16:33 PM |

Javi is a better ball handler than Mays. Javi should've been bringing it up every possession that he was in the game. Mays is more of a small 2 guard it seems. 12/2/2009 8:18:56 PM |
