So... Installed turbo inlet pipe, jumpered connection as shown

http://www.perrinperformance.com/shared/PERRIN/documents/instructions/subaru/pspint420.pdf

received P0458 code from ecu.

is this probably from that connection or another one?

Make sure the EVAP purge solenoid and its associated hoses are all plugged in and in good shape.

watch that perrin inlet, I have seen them come apart internally and destroy turbos...and they also tend to suck closed....

I have seen just about every silicone inlet fail. the GMS one is still a made in China piece

did you take the manifold off?

nope, aligned the inlet with the turbo, clampped it down, then wrestled the turbo onto the up-pipe.

I'll probably get an AMS one in a year or so but turbo blew too and i was BROKE

for inlet pipe replacement the intake is intended to be removed, just sayin. The hard inlets are a tad tougher to install but worth it in the long run as they do not degrade, suck closed, or come apart

the newer silicon inlets have a spring like support in them to keep from being sucked shut, however i could still see it separating.

I didn't take the manifold off because then i knew i would want to start messing with fuel lines and rails and it would snow ball into something i couldn't afford, i got it on there just fine really, i have no exhaust leaks. I do have a vacuum leak but i think its from one of the barbs on the turbo inlet being a POS and i'm going to clamp them all down.

I have learned a few things.

#1 don't trust anything made by one of the Import image racing brands. (except the gimmick exhaust gaskets worked great)
#2 banjo bolts don't like to be fucked with tightening it down the 4th time killed it.
#3 Impact wrenches ROCK!
#4 every vacuum line should be secured in some fashion.
#5 don't short the pcv circuit to ground

yeah i know, i would never use one to tighten anything... but i'm used to breaking shit under my own arm power (seriously i'd say i broke off half the stock bolts doing the jeep lift's i've installed which is around a dozen (lifts)) I've never really used impact tools because i never had a compressor but it seems like they are more bolt friendly then breaker bar.

yeah, Import image will sell the cheapest chit on earth if they think it will make them some money, plus he does not really stock anything he orders as needed.

even with the spring thy can delaminate and suck closed, I have seen even the expensive samco ones fail, but the chinese made ones are by far the worst.

the banjo bolt failed or the crush washers?

a *non stock* banjo bolt for the larger MHI oiling requirements failed at the oil pass-thru.

yall have anyone running a air to water intercooler down there?

i really want the cooling capacity of a FMIC without the inherent issues of one... which makes me want a huge a/w heat exchanger and a big tmic a/w core.

wait... they sleeved a closed deck 2.2 to get the 4" bore?

I mean its a neat setup, i do feel like he found a unicorn and then grafted a human body on it to make a centaur... which i guess is still cool, but why?

I do like fugliesters but i would have just done 2.2 twin scroll. and rev the piss out of it.

Matter of fact when i can afford to that will probably make a good rallyx vehicle

WOOOHHAAA!!!

yeah my addiction makes me say stupid stuff.

I really think there is a mental disease affiliated with horsepower. I mean i have a spread sheet for over a dozen different builds on my desktop at home with estimated prices, power, performance, then general pros and cons... It's pretty sad actually. But the stock jdm (ohh god i didn't just go there) twinscroll setup on a 2.2 in a fugliester would have great response and hold power well up high.

But, i like where i'm at now with my car, i need to wrap it up with intercooler and some larger injectors, but my crazy power goals will be saved for something old with a much larger engine that i don't drive every day and can be caged without annoying the shit out of me on a daily basis.

the reason that block got sleeved is because the stock sleeve had broken free and rotated in the block.. and closed deck 2.2 block are not as rare as forums would like you to believe, that one was a freebee out of a old legacy turbo.

yeah E took a bunch of time off after he was in a bad wreck....and building his house.

the Forester was started by the previous owner, but is now just a plaything/daily driver. Now that he has two kid the forester is just so much more useable

the 2.2 block was extremely rough when we found it, and when disassembling it we found that the cylinder liner had shifted (eventually making it garbage) so it became a candidate for being sleeved, and we already had a customer's block being sleeved out to 4 inch so why not?

smoothcrim how do you Know E?

that's cool, i'd love a bottom end with piston squirters . what turbo is he running? is it going to be a long rod motor or just waaay over square?

But, after my intercooler, injectors, and pump, i'm calling it quits on the 'roo till i get another d.d.

I want to say it will have a 2.5 crank with the 4 inch bore but don't hold me to it.

yeah the piston squirters are the main reason that that block did not get junked, as the sleeved motors are just about as strong as the solid deck motors anyway.

^^^^ eric used to do a bit of dsm stuff when he was still messing with sy/ty stuff living off high house/chattam and I met him when I was building mine. I don't remember what I bout. I also had him cnc machine some brake mount brackets before I said fuck it and bought some wilwood calipers that were direct fit. wish I'd had the money to let him do a lot of the build but I was too poor back then.

Ok time to change up intercoolers. Should i go FMIC, and deal with the rich dip from having the maf 7 feet of pipe before the intake. but have much better cooling then the rest or should i go with the bigish process west TMIC (my avo can't keep up), or should i design my own air to water and have the best of both worlds but with the downside of added weight.

i can't figure out which downside is least intrusive.

all i know is i don't want any knock from heat soak.

Currently i have a larger than stock turbo but i'll probably go bigger later... like gt3076 size.

I wouldn't do an air/water intercooler unless you have a consistently available backup car. I say that because like anything custom, shit is going to go wrong at first and you don't want to have to depend on the vehicle.

I would say the process west because it would be easier to reverse if you don't like it, and it doesn't block airflow to your A/C condenser and radiator.

yeah PW does make an LGT kit now but its only coming through 1 vendor and i'm still skeptical of how useful it will be on the tiny LGT hood scoop.

it will make as much of a difference as a front mount on a legacy, the lgt front bumpers are not well setup for cutting for a front mount, plus the added volume of alll the plumbing makes boost build slower. as for the hood scoop, most of the new subarus have smaller scoops and still achieve good results from larger top mounts (think 08 up wrx vs sti)
the process west is super nice and usually include all parts nessary, so it is as good quality as the old aps but with everything ya need

subaru should really bring back the SVX as a turbo model to compete with the GTR.

Everyone who spent thousands and thousands of dollars on big turbo STIs (the 10.X and lower crowd) have all jumped ship to the GTR.

Does the Forester XT amount to a taller, squarer WRX wagon with the 2.5L STi engine (but smaller WRX turbocharger)?

What other drivetrain components does it have? What about suspension and brakes?

I'm not sure about all the suspension bits, but the powertrain is very close to the '06 WRX. So it has the 2.5 liter engine with the TD04-13T turbo that has similar fitment to the STi. This is as opposed to the turbo Legacy and the later WRX which has a larger turbo and a different style of intercooler, intake manifold, and throttlebody.

...so if one were inclined to build a meat-eating Subaru wagon, which model (presumably WRX wagon or Forester XT) and which year(s) would be the most desirable?

Are you just going to drive it around and do daily driver stuff? Make a significant project out of it? Do minor bolt-ons? What's the budget?

Yeah, daily driver with bolt-ons. If I did it, it would be to have something practical to DD, and then just tow a Super Seven or shifter kart or something to HPDEs and autocrosses. Maybe I would take run it on the track once in a blue moon, but basically it would be a hotter-than-average DD wagon.

[Edited on January 12, 2012 at 7:28 PM. Reason : i like the older-gen "tall wagons" much more than the current-gen "gayass crossover SUV"]

wel the 04 up forester XT is a good start, they are already 2.5s just liek STIs, they just come pith piddly TD04 turbos. a decent upgraded turbo/intercooler makes a quick daily driver. Add on the STI brakes and a decent suspension and it is a good all around fast car.
downsides to teh forster are

hard to find 5 speeds
5 speed is prone to breakage
wheels/hubs are 5x100 so wheel ftment is not as broad as STI
suspension components are shared with WRX wagon, not sedan so unless you do all control arms, and lateral links (bolt on) you can't jsut bolt on STI parts without having big alignment hassles.

yeah and the 03/04 are my favorite looking foresters.

They have the huge sunroof that the outback and legacy wagon have that is really cool but seems to break a lot.

^ can probably correct me on this, but i think the forester is geared differently for larger tires etc so if you do the sti suspension swap you end up with short ratios and the transmission holds up a little better then the wrx version.

but yes the short block is fairly similar to the sti short block and can hold similar power.

For a while i thought they weren't avcs motors but i was corrected on that too.
