Yeah, I'm sure his family has a great recipe for some Nachos that dates all the way back to ancient Mexico.

Now as for the "freakshow" comment, he must be thinking of the exceptions to the rule.

So I am confused, you are transgender, i.e. you have a male body but a female's consciousness. However, you are attracted to women? So a lesbian in a man's body?

Do you have the urge to fuck women in a traditional way? If so, how does this make you any different than any other male? Just perhaps a difference in clothing style selection?

Forgive me if I am missing something.

"How is it NOT offensive? I would think that even if you are a transgendered person, it should still be obvious what gender you are presenting as and someone asking you to clarify would be just as offensive as someone asking a "normal" person. The simple fact of the matter is that MOST (i.e. well over 99%) people don't have an issue with people not being able to tell what sex they are. And if you look like a woman, dress like a woman, but want people to refer to you as a man, then the burden should be on you to let people know, or don't get offended when people don't get it right. Asking every single person to clarify, just for the sake of a small group of individuals is beyond stupid. This is a prime example of when political correctness has won out over common sense."

I don't want to give this troll too much credit, but it works like this:
"Hi, my name is Ben and I prefer pronouns he and him."

Some folks in my fellowship do have very androgynous appearances, and even the one's who don't may identify as something that doesn't match their appearance at all, so we see it fit to classify ourselves as part of introductions so no one will ever need to ask.

How is it trolling if I'm giving my honest opinion and practically begging for intelligent dialog in return?

So many people want to be dismissive of legitimate points by throwing out words like troll, and phrases like "you mad?" No, I'm not mad, and no I'm not simply trolling for a reaction. It is entirely possible to have a discussion about topics on the internet where two people disagree without one of them being a troll or raging at their computer in anger. I don't see why this is so hard for so many people to grasp.

I still think that pandering down to the lowest common denominator is dumb in almost all instances especially this one, but seeing as how this discussion really has nowhere to go but "I think it's dumb vs I think it's fine" I'll see myself out of the thread now.

^ the thing is there are people who think like you, there is nothing wrong with it, but this is the more "traditional" way of thinking where men marry women and gay people are thought of as a disease or mental disorder. While it can be taken offensively, that is your opinion. (I am not saying that this is your actual opinion of gay people, but it falls into the category of a traditionalist's thinking) Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it can often be taken offensively, especially those who are of a different sexual orientation. This is why some people may take to irrational arguments, because it a subject that they feel passionately about and cannot understand the other viewpoint. As is what I imagine to be the case for you, your comments appear "defensive" because you are trying to refute their opinions with yours. That is why people are responding with "you mad?" etc.. because you are fighting opinion with opinion. Essentially no one is wrong.

However, there are other people who either are gay/transgender/transexual/androgynous etc or know someone very close to them and understand the process and the emotional rollercoaster that goes with it. It is hard to understand when you have never been exposed to it at a personal level, and so the reaction tends to be "what a waste of time" when they do not understand that. If you care to make analogies, then you can relate it to calling a pregnant women "fat" and a maternity leave "lazy", you are entitled to these opinions, but the workplace is supposed to at least attempt to help everyone, not just one side of the spectrum, to be productive and comfortable. I am guessing that you may not understand it (as men often do not connect to their emotional side, which is fine) because straight men have had a place in the workforce their whole lives, as do most straight women nowadays. However there are still people who are not recognized as people, and in more "progressive" cities where people go for acceptance it is becoming the norm, so yes it becomes apart of the workplace courtesy to understand that not everyone is the typical definition of male and female. This is not going to happen nationwide, so you most likely will not encounter this in your lifetime, so if it truly bothers you, then just be happy you read it on the internet I guess.

As an extreme supporter of LGBT rights, I also think it's a little silly and over the top. Then again, I don't know where he works. I think it's ridiculous to call someone "traditional" for feeling this way, as if everything done in the name of catering to LGBT needs is necessary.

I don't think it has a place in most cities, but if your company has people that are not clear in their gender, then maybe it would be prudent for the HR dept to have that to avoid potential lawsuits. By having a policy like that, the company will appear much more LGBT-friendly and less likely to have suits filed against and are more likely to win if it is the case. So with the current employer lawsuit statistics, I can see why a company would rather do it this way.

^Whoa. Put away the jump to conclusions mat, darlin', you're bordering on crazy talk. Nowhere in this thread have I given my opinion on the LGBT community, gay rights, gay marriage, or much of anything else. You got onto me for making assumptions, but it seems like your entire argument is based on one big assumption that I'm traditional and/or just completely anti gay rights. And that's just simply not true.

I like to try to think rationally in all situations. I don't like to make decisions based on emotion if I can help it. And simply put, I don't think that HR policy is a very rational one when you look at the greater picture of most workplaces. You seem to want to turn this into a black and white, LGBT vs Haters issue, and I don't see it that way.

You honestly are coming off as if you're just looking for a battle to fight and if you can't find someone who disagrees with you, you'll just pretend they're the enemy and start swinging.

Speaking of rational comments:

This is easily the most rational thing posted in this thread in the last several pages.

may be a good spot for this. it probably has a thread of its own somewhere but it is interesting.

Quote :
"The Girl Scouts of Colorado has flip-flopped on its refusal to allow a prepubescent, transgender boy to join its ranks.

The leader of a Girl Scouts troop in Denver initially told 7-year-old Bobby Montoya that he couldn't join because, "he has boy parts."

But the organization had a change-of-heart, telling KUSA-TV in Denver, "Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization and we accept all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade as members.

"If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout."

Felisha Archuleta, Bobby's mom, was first told by the local troop over the phone that she could enroll her son.

"Bobby identifies as a girl, and he's a boy," Felisha Archuleta told KUSA-TV.

"He's been doing this since he was about 2 years old. He's loved girl stuff, so we just let him dress how he wants, as long as he's happy."

But when Felisha and Bobby, who has two older siblings, got there, the troop leader flipped out, fumed Rose Archuleta, Bobby's 52-year-old grandmother.

"The woman was so rude and made him cry," she huffed to The Daily News during a phone interview Wednesday night. "I mean, he was devastated by what she said."

Felisha Archuleta told KUSA-TV that the troop leader told her, "It doesn't matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can't be in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts don't allow that I don't want to be in trouble by parents or my supervisor."

"I really got upset because my grandson is himself. We've all accepted it," Rose Archuleta told The News. "We've all accepted Bobby as he is, and for this lady to talk to him that way, it was just awful. This lady shouldn't be working with kids."

The vitriolic, sharp-tongued troop leader only identified herself as Mary, and would not divulge her last name, Rose Archuleta said.

Neither The Girl Scouts of Colorado, nor The Girl Scouts of America, the group's parent organization, could be reached Wednesday night.

But the state organization previously told KUSA-TV, "Our requests for support of transgender kids have grown, and Girl Scouts of Colorado is working to best support these children, their families and the volunteers who serve them.

"In this case, an associate delivering our program was not aware of our approach."

It appears that Felisha and Bobby aren't taking the Girl Scouts of Colorado up on their offer anytime soon.

"My daughter is never going to take him back to join that Girl Scout Troop," Rose Archuleta told The News.

Of whether Felisha is going to take Bobby to a different troop, the grandmother added, "She's thinking about it but there's not one really close to the house and she has two other children that are in sports, so it's kind of hard to take him clear across town to another one."

not really, I was trying to look at it from a corporate stand point and why they would implement this, I was not talking about how you hate, or anyone in particular, hates the LGBT community. I was just sort of putting it out there as a reason it happened. And After considering it, it does seem overboard in many situations, but I know there are some areas in the country that may actually need this in some companies, but that is only speculation.... not jumping to conclusions.

Many a journalist gets the pronouns confused; at the beginning, it even mentioned a "transgender boy."

As for the people quoted in the article, they just think of Montoya as a boy.
It's hard to take a child's cross-gender identification seriously, even if you're not blatantly bigoted, because the vast majority of such children actually turn out to be cisgender (but not heterosexual); the best thing to do in such cases is to allow the child to present as the desired gender, and if such identification persists near puberty, consider breaking out the hormone-blockers to buy some time until ze is old enough to make the more permanent decisions.
