Last week the government was mounting a PR campaign to activate it, this week it may not even be there any more. It would follow the usual nuclear disaster blueprint: built by a dictator in a terrible location at great public cost, rejected during a period of temporary democracy and pursued again once corruption in Aquino's government reached sufficient levels.

Although those buildings may be the only ones still standing in that area now...as long as the volcano it's built on didn't erupt overnight. Nuclear power in southeast asia, whose population outnumbers the rest of the world combined, is asking for megadeaths.

Radiation exposure isn't even that bad. Most of the population is so confused by movies and fiction that they think they will grow another head if they are exposed to a little extra radiation. Its ridiculous.

Fukushima proved that the buildings need not be destroyed for catastrophe to occur; a lack of backup generators due to flooding is sufficient.

Raleigh power plant has been actively pumping 61 million gallons of unfiltered toxic waste into the Cape Fear river for over seven months. Regulators were unaware and apparently oblivious, since this was completely out in the open with bright red equipment.

Same company, 10 miles away from the nuke plant. If we can't trust them to keep water in a dirt pond, how can we trust them(or state/federal regulators) to manage something really dangerous.

It seems clear that after these aerial photos were given to the NCDENR, they immediately tipped off Duke Energy so they could remove the pumps ahead of the inspectors' arrival. These are criminal actions and are now being treated accordingly.

Three years later, and no work has yet been done to remove fuel from the damaged Fukushima reactors. All available manpower is being used in failed attempts to prevent further groundwater contamination. Workers are reaching exposure limits faster than new ones can be trained. Site cleanup is now projected to cost $100 billion and take 40 years.

Meanwhile, 30 years after Chernobyl, money has run out for The New Safe Confinement barn that is being built. Instead of being finished this year as planned, best case estimates are an additional 5 years, assuming western nations continue giving money to Russia/Ukraine, which isn't likely to happen. Only then can work on dismantling the reactor commence.

Natural gas is the way of the future. It's so cheap that energy companies are practically begging to shut down their nuke plants. The only thing keeping nuclear alive in this country is the massive expense involved in shutting them down and cleaning up the sites. All it will take now is for regulators to actually man up and start refusing rate hikes solely to keep unprofitable nuclear plants running.
