My friend who worked on the first film, and will presumably be working on the 2nd, said that they will be shooting in Raleigh as the Capital. I dunno if he just heard false rumors too, or if there is some truth to it. He normally knows about future productions long before they announce it 4/13/2012 8:22:12 AM |

I thought that Lawrence was referring to Jennifer Lawrence, and I got a little confused there.
I think it'll be a good thing. Look at the Twilight and HP franchises. New directors definitely improved the movies as they went along. Only bad thing could be the delay in filming, etc. 4/27/2012 1:13:52 PM |

There will be no delay in filming, that is why they made the director switch. Gary Ross directed the first one and would have stayed to direct Catching Fire but the production schedule was too quick for his tastes... FYI, he directs a movie about once every 4 years (but they've all been pretty good movies). They wanted to start filming right away so they could release it next year. The people doing the X-Men First Class sequel (i guess fox) had first dibs on Jennifer Lawrence but they agreed to start filming their sequel in January so Catching Fire could shoot late summer/early fall.
So with Ross out, they had to scramble to find someone to do it on the short production schedule (which Ross wasn't comfortable with). Personally, I thought one of the other directors they considered was a better option, but we'll see. Lawrence's resume certainly isn't as good as Ross' in my opinion.
It also would have been unusual for Ross anyhow because, if you look at his credits, he tends to make movies that vary a good bit in style, subject, tone, etc. from one project to the next.

I don't know anything about the books and just saw this movie. It was really good I thought.
I have a question though...
SPOILERS!!!!!
Why was it such a big deal for both of them to die? I would imagine this has happened before...
Are there other countries in this world? Why don't they seem to have population issues, etc., that you'd expect for a future society?

imagine you've been watching a particularly enthralling reality show, waiting to see who wins... then, nothing. if the hunger games are used as a tool for oppression, there needs to be a winner for the audience to fall in love with. 5/5/2012 12:14:26 AM |

i'm pretty sure there are no population issues because there was some sort of war/big event many years before the movie takes place that pretty much wiped out the country. And there was/is also a a food shortage... there's actually something to the fact that the competition is called the "hunger" games. 5/5/2012 7:58:12 AM |

seems pretty plausible that the government would be involved is some population control outside of the hunger games too. 5/5/2012 1:26:19 PM |

If they had committed suicide they woukd have become martyrs, showing they would rather die than follow the rules of the opressive capital. That would be a very dangerous thing for live tv broadcast to all the other districts. 5/5/2012 3:42:44 PM |

so i just finished reading the series.....
SPOILERS
holy shit what a depressing final book. and i can't believe she ended up with that little prick peeta. i hated that guy throughout the entire series, despite the author's attempts to make us empathize with him. i almost wish katniss had just died, since she was so broken psychologically and you were gonna piss off half the readers who wanted her to be with gale anyway. also really bummed that finnick died after all that he went through with annie (who was pregnant no less). i think enough important people died throughout that he could've been spared (and knocked off peeta instead, that little fucker). it wasn't even a good death, just a mention that he'd had his head bitten off by the mutts. if the filmmakers take any creative liberties with the series, i hope they keep him alive.
END SPOILERS

http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/philip-seymour-hoffman-offered-role-in-hunger-games-sequel-20120612
Quote : | "Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman reportedly has been offered the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Entertainment Weekly notes.
In the book series, the shrewd Heavensbee plays a crucial role after he becomes the new Gamekeeper, succeeding Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley). Lionsgate had no comment on the offer to Hoffman, who just finished a widely praised run on Broadway as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman.
Back in April, director Francis Lawrence (no relation to the film's star Jennifer Lawrence) signed to helm Catching Fire, after The Hunger Games director Gary Ross declined the gig due to tight scheduling. Filming for Catching Fire is set to begin later this fall, and the movie is scheduled to reach theaters in November of 2013." |

Plutarch was supposed to have been witness to Katniss' private session the first time through so I thought they would have made it one of the folks already seen. In 10 years Steven Spielberg will CGI PSH into the first movie. 6/14/2012 2:57:45 AM |

That'll probably make a lot of the fan base happy, but I don't think it's necessary for the length and content of the book. I'm sure it's because Harry Potter and Twilight both did it. 7/11/2012 10:49:40 AM |

oh it's totally for money
however...if they can make something better out of some short changed (IMO) parts of the ending, then i'm all good with 4 movies. i have no idea where they will do the split though. io9 made a suggestion that is probably most viable...but I dare not say where in this thread. 7/11/2012 10:54:03 AM |
