so there is a pregnant woman I work with.

when a task arises for me to do, she continually offers help.
I tell her " it's ok, I can do it, it's really only a one person job" which I can because it is really a 1 person job

but she insists "Are you sure? I can help move the plants etc" and other various physical things

and I am not telling her any of that because I don't think she can or should do it, but my dumbass said "you don't need to be lifting things right now anyway" which I was really just trying to get her to stop insisting on slowing things down when it was a 1 person job to begin with.

and I am pretty sure that I pissed her off because she keeps saying "I can do THAT I am not disabled etc etc"

sigh, I didn't mean it like that. but seriously, I know she is not crippled, but she IS pregnant and I don't even need the help. I was only trying to end the conversation.

whatever, she hates me anyway. Talks crap about me all the time and says she is the only one who does any work in our office.

My kind of job. I'm not letting any of my employees work today, I told them they weren't allowed to try to come into the office. Everyone will still get paid.

(having a culture of safety doesn't start and stop at the office, it should follow everyone home)

That's pretty baller, good for you.

Everyone I've worked for in the past has docked a PTO day or let you take the day unpaid, even if they sent out an email that told everyone not to come in.

While I never got to experience this, at my last company they had a system where the principles would come around and pick up anyone that couldn't come in. There were enough of them with large modded SUVs or tractors that they could get almost anywhere.

I've never gotten that one. I'd immediately feel the need to fuck with them.

But what I often get is people who have to go through multiple formalities before they get to the point of their question.

random person at the company: Hi Bobby
Bobby: Hi, what's up?

(2-3 minute pause)

random person: How are you (or if they're indian it's "hw r u?")
Bobby: doing well, what's up?

(another 2-3 minute pause)

random person: good. I have a question.
Bobby: JUST FUCKING TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED

(ok not really but it's what I want to do every time)

It's called "Instant Messaging" for a reason. The formality crap is such a waste of time. All I want to read is:

"Hi Bobby, I'm so-and-so with such-and-such group, and I have problem x that I'm hoping you can help with. Do you have a few minutes to talk?"

If I get that kind of intro, 90% of the time, I'll probably drop what I'm doing and help. If not, I'll suggest a time when I'll be free to help, and block something off in my calendar for them.

Whenever I send an IM (or email) to someone out of the blue, I make sure they know who I am, what I want, and that I want to be respectful of their time before they even have to respond. I can't think of a time when I got pushback from someone I needed something from.

^^ as an example of our culture of safety, we are having a "snow-fun video contest" instead of letting people work from home. best video or pic wins free lunch.

one of our superintendents sent a video of him sledding with a couple other employees he lives near, and my boss, the owner and big boss, sent the following email reply:
it brings a tear to my eye seeing this, paying people to sled. Ok dude, I did not see safety glasses. And was there a pre-task "sledding" plan or JHA done? Looks like a near miss, please start a near-miss investigation and update PPE accordingly.

haha, this is why we haven't ever had a lost-time accident despite doing hazardous work

I don't why the company insists on it being this way, but we have an entire team of people whose sole job is to copy and paste what we say into some web form, which then deploys our builds via Anthill. And they routinely get even that wrong. And when they get it wrong, they don't bother to do any investigation as to why it went wrong; they just mark it as "failed" and put a note on the request form that we fill out (WEB BASED REQUEST FORM FROM WHICH THEY COPY OUR INSTRUCTIONS!!!!) and tell us to figure it out. We tell them they are morons and can't copy paste correctly because they are trying to download our source code from https://svn.foo.mycompany.org/Version 4.0.1.2.1... Twenty minutes later, they get back around to not being morons.

Well, we had a software release to PROD last night, and guess what happened... Dumbass put the change-request as the version number, and our shit deploys to the wrong folder... and then she disappears for thirty minutes so we can't fucking tell her to fix it. And we pay these idiots 60k or more a year to be incapable of copying and pasting.

^^ I'm not exaggerating that at all. My group ended up hiring a guy from that group as a junior dev, and he would tell us the horrors he witnessed on that job. He also said that it wasn't unusual for him to just stay home and play x-box all day while waiting for the emails to come in. Sweet gig, I guess

This year instead of providing us with a list of Limited English Proficiency students in our classes (the way students with Individualized Education Plans and code 504 plans are), the English as a Second Language coordinator sent us a list of all the LEPs in the school and had us compare this master list to our rosters. Instead of informing us of which mods they receive, they sent a google survey asking what mods we thought they should receive.

Our messaging system doesn't make a noise, or send a popup, or anything to notify you when you have a new message. So when I ask a question, I have to go back and check every few minutes to see when I get an answer.

I admit that when she did this to me, I ignored her. If you want me to come to your office, do not fucking yell at me from your office. You can get up like a polite person and ask me to my face.

I had a POS a few years ago that would have problems in high heat. So in the middle of summer, Getting to work would be no problem, but when I'd leave around 5:30 and the car wouldn't start. I'd have to run inside real quick to find someone to help me jump it before the whole place cleared out and I was stranded.

^I had a friend who's boss was pretty sexist and would do this to all the women that worked for him. He wouldn't even call them by name, he'd just yell out shit like "I need my events coordinator in here."
She just ignored him until he'd call her on the phone, then correct him when he didn't call her anything other than her name. He never caught on, and the company eventually fired him. His numbers were good, but they realized that staff turnover was so high because no one liked working for him.

Had to travel to Kentucky for work for a day. Flew in Sunday afternoon, flew out Monday night. Flight was supposed to get back to Richmond 10:45, late enough as it is, but it was delayed for over an hour and I ended up getting in to the airport here around 11:45 and didn't get home until 12:15 AM. Had to be in at 8 the next day. Ugh.

i just finished a project, the total dollar value for project changes was $670k. The client was very upset.

I forwarded him the original cost proposal that was $700k higher than contract value ended up after he started cutting the items that he added back throughout the project as changes.

don't get mad at me dude, i was almost spot-on with my estimate

(Since the client is supposed to share project savings with us per contract, I'm tempted to submit that as $30k in savings )

yes, clients always do. they "value engineer" and descope the project to death, then add all those things back as changes. controls are always the first to get hacked apart, which is bad because controls contractors almost never catch everything in their estimate.

if it makes such a difference to have the table .75 cm over to the left (after I had fixed 8 other things over the past 2 days) then why didn't you tell me this before when we discussed it mutliple times?

and seriously it does not make a difference, how about you just do it yourself because it is 4:30 on a Friday
