I don't think it was a "Shaka is God" situation so much as it was "compared to Marshall/Lonergan/Cronin/whoever else, I think Shaka has much more upside" situation.

Though it's pretty funny how many people turned on him and how many Marshall supporters appeared after he announced he was staying at VCU.

we must have a coach. Not sure if it happened before or after the Shaka announcement/media but we now likely have a coach. Nobody has any idea who it is, so cue up the panicked shitstorm until a presser is announced and things start to leak.

No way Marshall and Cronin and Shaka all come out in one day, Mizzou hires a coach, etc. Must mean that we got "a" guy, doesn't mean everyone will be happy with him, but we got somebody. I think yow is too tough a bitch to be publicly humiliated like this without having a hire made.

I think Shaka and Marshall were allowed to go back to their respective schools with their head held high after being told by DY that we were no longer interested. We gave them the opportunity to say 'I wasn't interested' after we made a hiring decision and it wasn't them.

Ok, here's how it went down:

We have 2 coaches lined up with contingent preliminary offers, Jay Wright and Gregg Marshall. Wright is only in for big money, something like $2.8 million/year. We offer Shaka $2 million/year. He turns us down.

We let Wright know that it's on. We let Marshall know we're sorry.

Gregg Marshall announces he's staying tonight.

We didn't get "turned down". The only things we know is that NCState contacted Smart with interest at some point and that he decided to stay at VCU. Perhaps it is semantics or perhaps Yow has a Barnes or Miller and they are trying to finalize a deal, meanwhile Yow is keeping her options open by contacting the various mid-major coaches to see if they would be interested . Then when the deal is done or near done, she calls these guys (Marshall, Cronin, Smart) and tells them whats up. Next thing you know all of them announce within a few hours that they are all staying at their respective schools.

Getting Barnes or Miller is a pipe dream to be sure, but to me it's way more believable than actually getting turned down by Marshall. As shitty as our job may be, Marshall isn't too good for it. Fuck that.
