Guys stop saying we're just going to win out like that's an expected thing.
If you're so fucking sure we're going to win out you'd bet on it at 3:1 odds and win a ton of money.
It's like some of you guys get so fucking confused between "likely" and "unlikely".
If I said hey there's a 25% chance that if you drive to New Jersey this weekend you'll get laid most people would be like "eh, that's too small of a chance".
But when we have a 25% chance to win our next four games you guys pretend it's LIKELY and then get all butthurt when we lose a game. If you REALLY thought it was likely you'd bet on it and make a huge amount of money. I don't care if you're a gambler or not, if you get 3:1 odds on something that is LIKELY you'd take it.
25% chance we win out /= likely. Period. 2/23/2013 10:54:48 PM |

yeah i mean the sad truth is that UNC is unquestionably a better team than we are right now. They've had a much tougher ACC schedule with better results and they are peaking right now while we are hitting rock bottom.
Which is pathetic. This is like their 4th worst team since the 1960's and they are better than our 4th best in the same timeframe. 2/24/2013 12:13:33 AM |

Preseason expectations Underachieved even my most modest expectations which are always considered "pessimistic" by our hype train fan base.
Quote : | " Okay, so we're returning a lot of guys so obviously we can expect to improve but let's look a little closer.
1) Scott Wood and Richard Howell are an excellent 3 point shooter and rebounder, respectively. They're already an A+ in this category so we can't realistically expect much improvement in this area. Other than that they are somewhat one dimensional and are seniors so I don't think it's realistic to expect monumental improvement elsewhere except perhaps Howell's conditioning.
2) ZoBoJo's and CJello must improve monumentally to justify our National Contender status. Some improvement is to be expected of course since Zoboloft has had a full year to run the point and seemed to really come into his own at the end of the season as he gained confidence. C-Jaylo should have continued to improve his strength, athleticism, and shooting touch which will obviously be huge. The real concern with these guys though is what happens if the team underachieves early? They've been through some adversity in their careers already. Will they come together or will they start looking out for their own draft stock or fold under the pressure? It's easy to forget that sometimes players REGRESS rather than improve. I expect them to improve, but it's not exactly a tiny step they are expected to take if we're going to be national contenders.
3) Will Purvis as a freshman be better than CJoWo was as a senior? Tough call. CJoWo was still a double figure scorer and was a solid rebounder/defender. Even highly rated freshmen sometimes struggle to adapt to the college game, though SG is one of the easier spots to contribute from right away.
4) Our bench. Does Vandy adequately replace Painter? Will Lewis and Warren add a lift or will they be just marginal rotation players? Will TDT add anything?
5) Offensively there is obviously a ton of talent and we'll probably be near the top of the country. Defensively, we still have to prove that we can compete at a high level. We did it for a few games at the end of last season, but we'll need to see if with all this hype we still put in the work on the defensive end or if we just expect our talent to carry us without it.
There are a lot of question marks on this team. I think we're definitely a legit top 25 team assuming modest improvements, but it's quite a leap to go from being a top ~60 team last year to a top 5 team this year like some people seem to expect.
I just hope people don't forget to be excited if we're closer to a top 25 team than a top 5 one.
Credit to Sidney Lowe for putting together a great roster and hopefully credit to Gottfried for getting these guys to play great this year." |

GTFO with that. Rock bottom? We're in the same position that we were at this point one year ago (7-5 ACC record with 4 games remaining...and we only won 2 of those last 4). Plus we had 4 teams ahead of us in the conference.
I know most of us were expecting something better but it's not like this season has been a failure. We're still in position to make the NCAA tourny and I have faith Gott will pull the team back together by the ACCT.
No need to panic just because we lost to the team that was going to play it's absolute hardest against us at home. We had a nice streak and good feelings going into this game, that shouldn't have been completely ruined.2/24/2013 1:34:48 AM |

As long as we win 2 of the last 4 we'll still be in. Just a crappy seed. Our RPI will be too good to get left out. GT had a similar season to ours the last time they were a tourney team. This season has been odd because we have made some real strides in the right direction (finally beating Duke and UNC, nice neutral win against UConn, taking care of business in the non conference schedule) followed by inexplicable performances and blown opportunities. We could be 24-3 easily. But we also could probably be 16-12 as easily.
Frustrating season. Plain and simple. And I really can't put my finger on why. Leslie has regressed terribly. Brown is too passive. The freshmen are inconsistent. The D is pathetic. And Howell has really struggled finishing around the rim.
Facts are unless something drastically changes in two weeks, this team will make the tourney but will be out the first weekend, likely the first game. And probably out before one of UNC's worst teams under Roy.

I expected average to poor defense from this team. I expected our freshmen to be inconsistent and CJL to continue to be a headcase (although he had me fooled early in the year when he was pretty consistent). I didn't expect VDV and TDT to not develop in any way, but one of the most baffling things about this team to me is the piss poor free throw shooting. We are one of the top teams in getting to the line, have excellent shooting percentage from the floor but we have the 207th ranked free throw shooting % in the country.
Keeps us from extending leads and causes us to lose close ones and I'd bet it is going to screw us in the tourney. 2/24/2013 8:44:12 AM |

I don't know. Our SOS will take a big hit these next four games against bad opponents. You throw 2 losses in there and we'll definitely be out of the top 30 in the RPI. A loss in the 4/5 game and we'd be out almost for certain.
Outside of the top 30 anything can happen on selection sunday. Not to mention our record in our past 10 games will be pathetic. All it would take is a few upset winners/automatic bids in other tournies and we'd be on the outside looking in real quick.
We can't afford to close out with anything less than 3-1 and making it to the 4/5 game. 2/24/2013 8:51:50 AM |

If we take care of four under matched opponents we will still get a ACCT bye and probably be a 6 seed. Although I fully expect us to drop at least 1 of the last 4.
We're still in much better shape than we were last season thanks to some nice Top 25 RPI wins (Duke, UNC, UConn).

dude you are delusional. A #6 seed is all but out of the question at this point. We'd have to win out our next four games and advance to the ACC-t finals.
We'll be lucky at this point to get a 9 or 10 seed.
And I just did the math. If we play at the average level we've played at this season (which I dont think we can even do at this point) we have a 25% chance to win our next four games. That's not exactly good odds so stop acting like it's likely.

^^^^I stated that I'm sure we will drop one. So clearly I am not delusional about the last four. ESPN had us as a 6 before yesterday. And we lost to a team ranked higher in your beloved kenpom on the road. So I don't really see how that changes our seed much. Thus I could see a 6 if we win out. 2/24/2013 11:55:53 AM |

CJ's taken blame for yesterday's loss so it sounds like he knows he has to do some work.
If he makes some adjustments on offense like passing the ball when he's in trouble and puts in 100% effort on defense then we will easily win out. 2/24/2013 7:31:00 PM |

All's well that ends well. We've still got the talent to do something special, just need to put it all together.
The best thing (and most frustrating thing) about this team is they haven't hit their peak yet. I think CJ taking responsibility for the loss is a big step in the right direction. Hopefully it forces him to his approach to the game, and changes Gott's emphasis on calling isolations for him. We'll see. 2/24/2013 9:03:33 PM |

This is simply not true when referring to the ACC, as face was.
UNC had the hardest schedule in the conference. This has been pretty widely talked about. Of the top half (six) teams they played all of them twice. The only bottom half teams they played twice were GT and FSU.
Anyway, am I correct in saying only tiebreak we would win is UNC? We'd lose UVa and a UNC/UVa/State tie?2/25/2013 8:45:59 AM |

Well fuck me. Its hard not to feel pessimistic about this team after 8 losses. We can keep saying we lost 4 games by a combined 7 points but at the end of the day its still 4 more losses. Everyone can see we have talent but just having talent is useless if we keep screwing up every game. Am I hopeful? Definitely. However, up until the the Wake Forest game my minimum expectation was a final 4. Then it turned into at least the Elite 8, and now I am wondering if we can even make the sweet sixteen (possibly even the tournament, if we don't win the next 4 games). Not making the tournament with this talent would be heart breaking but it would be typical NC State.... 2/25/2013 12:56:38 PM |

Wow you really had a minimum expectation of a Final Four? That is fucking crazy especially after we got crushed by Ok State. Obviously now we'll just have to hope to catch fire and maybe make it to the second weekend. Maybe CJL will wake up after his abortion on Sat.2/25/2013 1:42:22 PM |

damn you are setting yourself up for disappointment with shit like that. However, I also understand that a lot of fans had inflated expectations for this season because of the ridiculous, undeserved preseason ranking the team received.
If we can go 4-0 or 3-1 over these last 4 games, make a mini-run to the semis or the final of the ACCT, and a mini-run in the NCAAs to possibly the sweet-16, we will be about where I expected.
A final four was just nowhere in the cards at any point.2/25/2013 1:52:07 PM |
