Somebody mentioned a nature photography contest on the last page, so I thought I would mention this here.
Green Durham is hosting a photography contest open to amateur and professional photographers. There are several categories, including nature and people & nature. The photos have to be taken in Durham County. The prize is not very big, but it sounds like fun. Details and complete rules can be found here:
-->Deadline is April 8th

Seriously, what the fuck are you looking for? Unless resizing an image is a huge task for you there is no reason to post the same image twice to get our opinions on which one is less bad.

I think she just wanted to post the image multiple times, in hopes that quantity would compensate for a lack of quality.
It doesn't. 4/3/2009 1:34:07 AM |

One size shows it's awesomeness and the other allows it to fit all on one screen for those who don't like to scroll to see the image.
And Ronny, personally, it's a lot better than this;

wait, there's two fat bitches giving photo critiques and bad advice?
Honestly Kiwi, I like the picture, but the crop could use some work. At least it's properly exposed and doesn't have vignetting. I'd crop out the bottom and right margins more so to follow the rules of third and also the fact that the statue is looking to the left of the frame. Tight crops for subjects like that, specially when the background isn't that dynamic (although it is on the bottom), work better otherwise it'll be lost and look plain.
Personally, I'd photoshop some more clouds on the top portion of the sky, or maybe wait a little bit longer till the scene produced more clouds into the shot, or move to an angle that had it. 4/3/2009 3:16:38 PM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
Just to the left there was a big ass tree that I couldn't make flow with the composition so I went in pretty tight, I thought it was tight enough! I figured in my mind that having it too far to one side would make it look weird so that's why it's fairly centered.
Thank you for your useful critique though.

i find myself taking about 5-10 pics of the same thing and using the best one.do you guys who've been around for a while rely on the speed of slrs or is it one shot one kill? 4/4/2009 4:30:47 PM |

i'm a newb to the DSLR scene compared to most people in this thread, but i try and get my shots right the first time. i do take multiple pictures though to try different DOFs and whatnot, but mostly i'll just try to do it the best i can the first time.
that way, when the time for a quick picture where you only get one shot arises, you can hit it on the money. my $0.02. 4/4/2009 4:54:28 PM |

Yeah, I try to set a picture up in my eye before lifting the camera. I still take multiples but not nearly as many when I first started. Usually it's just playing with different manual settings to get certain aspects to play out. Or several different angles, I still do that A LOT. 4/4/2009 5:34:24 PM |

if I have the time, I take a few pictures, look at them on the camera, decide if anything needs tweaking, take a few more, review those, take a few more, rinse lather repeat.
then I get home and look at them and review them again and think about what I should have thought of when I was reviewing them in the camera. then I try and go take some more pictures.... 4/4/2009 8:15:56 PM |

I went canoeing today at lake/creek crabtree. I was very, very nervous about taking my camera out on the water, but 1) I'm less nervous in the boat than in the past 2) I have it insured (VPP on a renter's policy) 3) there are storage compartments in the canoe
For times I wanted it out for easy access, I had a good thick shopping bag from NCSU bookstores to put it in, and then laid it on top of a life jacket to keep it out of the water that can accumulate when one splashes while paddling
It's pretty sweet out there, but dammit, paddling and canoeing don't mix too well, especially when the wind is high
Oh, and all of this was far too long of an intro to say: I hope I got some sweet pictures today. 4/4/2009 9:15:13 PM |

^^^i've got that remote. it worked great when new, barely used it though. i guess the batteries ran low at some point, even though it's been just sitting there on lock. doesn't work so well when you sit behind it, gotta reach that transmitter out in front of the camera. you could try a cable release, and it might work a little better for you, especially if you're going for long exposures beyond the presets. 4/6/2009 1:53:50 AM |

Unfortunately I was in major funk and couldn't seem to take a good shot
Still got a couple of days, though

^^I live in durham, and it gets a bad rap. Hell, so far Raleigh has a higher per-capita rate of violent crime than durham for 2009.
The deer are the biggest threat to safety around here.
