So I guess the loss by UVA today to BC was bad for us, unless Maryland can beat them next weekend.

3 way tie is bad for us. But hopefully UNC* and UVA lose and we win. We'd get the tie breaker of UNC*. But not in the 3 way tie I think.

Now if duke would have play POY Ryan Kelly against UVA we'd be in business right now. Kelly would have dropped 50 on UVA.

you're saying if it goes virginia and then us tied with unc we come out in 4th, but a three way tie we come out third of three?

... interesting. how does that work?

We lose any tie scenario with Virginia.

Tied with only UVA, UVA wins 1-0 head to head.

If its a three way tie with UNC and Virginia, we lose. (UVA would be 2-1, UNC 2-2, NCSU 1-2 head to head)

If NCSU tied with only UNC AND UNC loses to Duke: NCSU wins. (1-1 head to head, 0-1 and 0-2 against Miami, NCSU 1-1 against Duke while UNC would be 0-2 agains Duke, NCSU wins

So unless UVA loses another or UNC loses both of their last games, State will be #5

here i can face this for you.

30% chance either of those happens.

[Edited on March 4, 2013 at 12:16 AM. Reason : actually that's not bad. but the most likely scenario is a three way tie.]

It feels like we've been rebounding so much better...but maybe that's because we've been winning.

Does anyone have the numbers on hand on how our rebounding has been during this 5-1 streak as opposed to the 2-5 streak before it?

ill take the 5 if it means uva is the 4. almost certain we can take them on a neutral floor with zo for the full game.

unc is hot. i'd like to avoid breaking the tie with them as long as possible.

Being #4 means a hell of a lot more than being #5...I'd rather play UVA on full rest than after having to play the day before.

jumped 9 spots in Kenpom from 45th to 36th after beating a terrible Georgia Tech team while struggling for much of the game

but i guess we're a much better defensive team than we were yesterday thanks to the shitty rims in GT's arena

I wouldn't say we struggled all that much. Maybe for 1/4 of the game.

Not sure exactly, but you could just go back and check the box scores. I know we obliterated FSU on the boards: 45 to 21. We actually had the same number of OREB as they had total.

Pretty sure we had a double-digit rebound advantage vs UNC and BC too. Last night's game had to be an aberration .... lots of long rebounds clanging off those rims.

Virginia losing certainy would hurt us but only if they win the last two. ANY scenario where we are tied with them, no matter if UNC is involved or not, we lose. Period.

We should be huge Terps fans all week. But even if UNC loses to Maryland it doesn't affect us much. Still need UNC to lose to Duke.

Tie breaker rules
http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/022607aaa.html

Quote :
"
If three or more teams are tied in the standings, the following procedures will be used:

a. The combined record of conference games between the tied teams involved will be compiled. Ties will be broken, and seedings assigned, based on the winning percentage of the combined conference records. The higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group is unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1; 1-0 is the same as 2-0; 2-0 is the same as 4-0; 2-1 is the same as 4-2; 1-0 is better than 1-1; 0-1 is the same as 0-2; 0-2 is the same as 0-4).

b. If procedure (a) fails to break the tie, then each tied team's record shall be compared to the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage by a higher winning percentage.

c. If the tie is broken by (a) or (b) regarding one of more teams, but three or more teams remain tied, then procedures (a) and (b) will be reapplied among those tied teams only.

d. If two teams remain tied, procedures (1) and (2) will be followed."

This is why we lose in a 3 way tie. Sucks because we would beat UNC head to head. Seems like the 3-way tie breaker should be used to determine the top seed of the 3 teams and then the 2-way tie should be used for the remaining 2 teams. Maybe that is how it is done but I don't read it that way.

All we need is this:

Beat WF and FSU.

Have UVA drop 1 game.

Have UNC lose to Duke.

If this all happens, we get the 3 seed as UVA gets the #5, UNC loses the tie breaker to us.

This sets us up for a potential rematch with Maryland (revenge mother fucker) in the ACC tourney and then a shot at Duke which could really boost our NCAAT seeding. All of this is going to take place.

The nice thing is that we play FSU before UVA or UNC play their final games, so if we can take care of business all the pressure will be on them to not choke away the bye.

NC State will be the 3rd seed if:
1. NCSU wins out AND Virginia finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC loses to Duke (or finishes 0-2)
2. NCSU finishes 1-1 AND Virginia finishes 0-2 AND UNC finishes 0-2

NC State will be the 4th seed if:
1. NCSU wins out AND UVA finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC finishes 2-0

2. NCSU wins out AND UVA finishes 1-1 (or 0-2) AND UNC loses to Maryland but beats Duke

3. NCSU finishes 1-1 AND UVA finishes 0-2 4. NCSU wins out AND UNC finishes 0-2

NC State will be the 5th seed if:
1. All unlisted scenarios

NC State will be the 6th seed if:
1. NCSU finishes 0-2 AND Maryland finishes 2-0

we play Wake at 9, UNC plays Maryland at 7

so unfortunately we can't beat Wake and then know regardless of what happens in the UNC/UMD game, that we'll finish 5th or better

I will be rooting for Maryland in that game regardless. Besides, the difference between 5th and 6th seed in the ACCT is negligible and if we lose these last two games then ACCT seeding is the last thing I will be worrying about

I hate that we were just a few free throws away from already having locked up #3. But honestly I just want us to win out and the rest of the ACC doesn't matter. Finishing 7-1 and adding on at least one (but hopefully more) ACCT win is going to look pretty good to the selection committee.

Yeah it is hardly negligible. If we get the 5th seed, our second game would be against UVa (based on the current standings) while Umd would most likely play UNC in the 3/6 game. Playing UVa >>> playing UNC right now. UNC is on a roll and we don't want to play them rested while we are coming off a game the day prior.

It is a moot point anyway as we are going to pound Wake tonight and UNC will most likely stomp UMd as well.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here but according to N&O, no team has ever won four games to win the ACC tournament. There's a first time for everything I guess but we really need that bye

Would also like to avoid a first round upset to VT

Other than our 2 runs from Thursday to Sunday, has any other ACC team even made the finals after playing on Thursday?

Well, not that long ago it was only 9 teams so it was just 1 play-in game, meaning it would have to be one of the 2 last place teams running the table.

Yes in 2010, Georgia Tech advanced as a #7 seed past #11 NC State in the semifinals to the championship game, where they nearly knocked off #1 Duke. This was good enough to get them into the NCAA tourney, despite having entered the ACC tourney with a 7-9 ACC record and without eclipsing the 20-win mark yet.

If we want to get to the final, what's really important is that we avoid Duke until Sunday. So that would mean either the 4 or 5 seed. We do not want the 3 seed. Best case scenario is we get the 4 seed, UNC gets the 3, and UVA drops down to 5. That way we play UVA, Miami, and then the winner of Duke/UNC.
