should i be able to play a legitimate game i bought and downloaded on xbox live from a usb stick? (i have a 4gig slim) i've downloaded borderlands twice, waiting on my third try right now. my procedure thus far has been: 1. insert 8gig usb flash drive 2. turn on xbox and go to settings->memory where its recognized as a memory unit with 7gig free (wtf?) 3. configure memory device, change name to geek stick. 4. download game to geek stick
the first time i tried to start the game, but it crapped out on the title screen and gave a "clean your disc and try again" error.
the second time i cleared the cache and then followed the same steps above. i was able to download and play for an hour or so, then turned it off and went to bed. when i came home today, it saw the flash drive but it was only recognized as a new 7gig memory unit, the xbox formatting and downladed game were gone.
I've tried googling but keep coming up with modding/hacking sites. i just want the thing to work. i did read that you can take apart the casing on an old xbox hdd and plug the drive itself into the new slim. any merit to that claim? 7/18/2011 9:37:22 PM |

To piggyback off your question, I just put a USB drive in my 360 and configured it so I could copy my profile onto it, and take it into my bedroom to watch Netflix on my console with a broken DVD drive, without having to recover my gamertag each time I switch consoles.
When I 'configured' (formatted) the drive, I got a message about a "Performance Warning" and that the drive didn't meet Microsoft's optimal standards. The MS KB article makes it sound like if you don't have their Sandisk USB stick that some games that have to save data to the USB drive could have negative performance. So that might be your issue.
Has anyone else had issues with a "Performance Warning", and if all I'm using the USB stick for is my profile, I doubt I should have any issues despite that warning, correct?] 7/24/2011 2:03:19 PM |

I guess I meant full games and not saved game data, I wouldn't expect an issue unless you were trying to run a full game from a USB stick 7/24/2011 6:32:26 PM |

Quote : | "Xbox addict 'dies from blood clot'
by: AFP
AFP The family of a budding computer programmer have on Saturday launched a campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of playing online computer games after their son died following a marathon session on his Xbox.
A post-mortem revealed that 20-year-old Chris Staniforth -- who was offered a place to study Game Design at Leicester University -- was killed by a pulmonary embolism, which can occur if someone sits in the same position for several hours.
Xbox 360 controller Deep vein thrombosis normally affects passengers on long-haul flights, but medical experts fear youngsters who spend hours glued to their consoles might also be at risk and have urged them to take regular breaks.
Professor Brian Colvin -- an expert on blood-related conditions -- said it was "unhealthy" for youngsters to spend long periods in front of their consoles.
"There's anxiety about obesity and children not doing anything other than looking at computer screens," he told The Sun.
David Staniforth has now launched a campaign to warn other parents of the dangers.
"Games are fun and once you've started playing it's hard to stop.
"Kids all over the country are playing these games for long periods - they don't realise it could kill them," he told The Sun.
A coroner's court in Sheffield was told how the youngster -- who had no underlying medical conditions -- was complaining of a low heart rate before collapsing outside a Jobcentre.
Staniforth's distraught father said his son would spend up to 12 hours playing on his Xbox.
"He got sucked in playing Halo online against people from all over the world."
Online computer games are extremely popular as thousands interact in shared science fiction worlds.
Reports of gamers collapsing after spending 15 hours in front of video games are fairly common throughout Asia.
In 2005, a South Korean gamer died after playing online games for three days without taking a break.
Microsoft -- which manufactures the Xbox -- said it "recommend gamers take breaks to exercise as well as make time for other pursuits."" |

Cloud Storage is only available to Xbox Live Gold Members.
Fuck Microsoft. That was like the one new feature I was moderately looking forward to. It's retarded that I can't watch Netflix or ESPN (both are services that I already pay a monthly fee for) either without being Gold. I don't care about online gaming at all. I wish there was a middle tier for people that actually want to use the service for things other than gaming. Actually, nah. I probably wouldn't pay $1 a month for that service, just on principle alone.

The update is alright, nothing particularly special about it (maybe if you have a kinect but lol). It's a bit more awkward to navigate now using a remote, which is annoying. I do like the new Friends tab better. I'll never use the Bing tab.
I sort of liked the ability to share achievements and whatnot, Until I saw it was only on Facebook. Fuck Facebook. 12/7/2011 9:42:59 AM |

I wouldn't say I regularly play. Before Skyrim, it had probably been 6 months, if not more, since I had even turned on my Xbox. Of course 60 hours into Skyrim, my Xbox shits the bed and I had to buy a new one. It happened to be Black Friday, so I picked up one of those $199 Kinect bundles. I still haven't even tried out that Kinect sports game or whatever that came with it.
Either way, bottom line is I just don't play it enough to justify paying $60 a year or however much it is now on a service that I would get very minimal use out of. It just sucks that the system is so gimped without paying extra. I get that most true gamers are gonna get gold anyway, but casual gamers who actually wouldn't mind using some of the console's other features seem to be getting screwed.

Eh, I pay for Xbox Live instead of cable TV and get pretty much everything I need through Netflix and broadcast stations, plus I check in on ESPN news from time to time.
I, for one, am looking forward to not having to use a remote. Hopefully Netflix updated their Kinect features, as their interface kind of sucked when you wanted to watch something via voice commands. 12/7/2011 5:58:04 PM |

You can get gold subscriptions routinely for <$40. That's less than $3.50 a month.
Quote : | "the system is so gimped without paying extra" |
The system is not at all gimped. You paid $199 for a GAME CONSOLE that allows you to play video games. It sounds like it's doing that job perfectly well.
Xbox Live Gold is about connected services. You want connected services? Pay for Live. Don't want them? Don't pay.
How much cheaper do you think it would be to JUST have online multiplayer and not any of the video services? IT WOULD BE THE SAME DAMN PRICE. The "cost" of xbox live is providing online multiplayer gaming, not all the other media apps. The media apps are a way to bring in non-gamers to the same ecosystem.
You can always go out and get a PS3 and do it all for free. Obviously 35 million+ people think that $40-60 bucks a year is valuable enough to pay for.12/7/2011 6:17:13 PM |

Somehow you managed to perfectly describe my issue with paying for the service, yet still sound like you're disagreeing with me. Weird.
I'd be perfectly fine if, for my Gold subscription to XBL, I got to watch Netflix, Hulu, and ESPN for "free". But that's not how it works. I have to pay for the content, and then have to pay Microsoft for the privilege of allowing me to view that content on their console. No thanks, I'll just use my Wii, 3DS, iPhone, iPad, PS3, Apple TV, Popcorn Hour, WDTV, Laptop, or computer that I have hooked up through HDMI to my TV.
Obviously, since you're TWWs resident paid spokesperson for Microsoft, you're going to come in here and defend them. I get it, that's what you do. But it's silly to think that someone like me, who doesn't care about gaming is going to pay for a service that's 99% geared towards gamers with a couple of media extras thrown on as an afterthought.]12/7/2011 7:39:40 PM |

The implication being that it wasn't clear the delineation between paid Live services and the basic console capabilities. You say you clearly understand what the subscription is paying for, yet you're surprised that cloud storage wouldn't be a premium feature?

Go for it. You don't have to pay Microsoft for anything, that's your whole point. And its the ability to view that content on one console, WITH voice control, gesture control, aggregated content search, party viewing and a more responsive experience. I love the Kinect voice + gesture controls, and I love the xbox media remote. All that together + media center integration makes it completely worth paying $40 a year to handle all my content (video+music+games) from one device in one common way.
Quote : | "Obviously, since you're TWWs resident paid spokesperson for Microsoft, you're going to come in here and defend them. I get it, that's what you do. I keep things objective, for whatever company. I've used the Wii, Apple TV, WDTV, PS3 for this purpose. I have a computer hooked up through HDMI to my TV running WMC. We don't anymore. We use the xbox, and the HTPC now really just acts as a backend for WMC. If Comcast ever pushes IPTV to the xbox, I won't even use that anymore.
The hilarious thing to me is that you're saying I'm biased, when you're admitting you've NEVER EVEN USED THE DAMN SERVICE YOU'RE RANTING ABOUT. You get a free trial of XBL Gold with the console. Why not try it for a month or two and then come back with actual impressions of it's value.
Once the last dashboard update happened, I got rid of all my other media devices. After this one it just reminds me I made the right choice.12/7/2011 9:05:37 PM |

Don't put words into my mouth in order to try and win some internet argument. I paid for Gold service for 4 years before I figured out that I was throwing my money away. I still use an Xbox console with a Gold account (not mine) on a weekly basis at least. I know plenty about the service and what I'm missing out on (not much) by not having a Gold account. You said it yourself. The service "WOULD BE THE SAME DAMN PRICE" if it were only the multiplayer services. Which means the value of the alternative services is, by your own accounts, next to nothing. Yet when that's all I care to use, I still am expected to pay the same price? It's simply not fair. But you're right, nobody is forcing me to pay for it, so that's why I'm not.
And you claiming to be objective is, quite literally the most amusing, and downright incorrect thing I've read on the internet in weeks. But obviously I wouldn't expect you to be objective. I wasn't even really pointing it out as a flaw of yours, mainly just a (very obvious) trait.

Fair? Since when is business fair? It's a pretty good market strategy if you ask me.
If you're using a PC too, you can always just use PlayOn and use the xbox with that. You get pretty much all the same content access, although you give up all the nice fancy interfaces. I used this for a while and it actually works decently, and it's a great way to get around the pesky "PC only" restrictions for certain shows and movies on Hulu.
Quote : | "The Xbox being a better media machine than a dedicated piece of hardware is laughable." |
Sales numbers don't lie. Its an all-in-one integrated experience. The biggest advantage over my HTPC is the Zune integration. One of the biggest advantages of dedicated hardware is using torrents to get content. But I pay for my content (Cable+Hulu+Netflix) so it doesn't do much for me.
Hulu integration in WMC is wonky, the netflix client isn't nearly as good as the xbox, and the Zune software isn't designed for a 10ft experience.
AppleTV doesn't support Hulu or any subscription music service (without completely hacking it, which is a fucking pain in the ass). The UI experience in XBMC is awful, and the livetv support is terrible.
WDTV has no cable or DVR support, netflix and hulu clients are laggy as hell. Its absolutely painful to use once youve tried either service on iOS, WMC, PS3 or the Xbox.
Popcorn hour pretty much has the same issues. UI is just slow and cumbersome, and there's not much support there for people like me who actually pay for their content.
I spent so many damn hours fucking with all the other options out there, at the end of the day my time is worth a lot more to me than 3 bucks a month. Even with the WMC on Win7, I seem to hit something every month or so that needs a reboot or a driver update or something.
