Yeah, they're one of the few hold outs that won't give internet only customers access to ESPN3 on the Xbox. It might be all customers, I can't remember. I would've switched, but there aren't any alternatives in my area that would be able to sustain any type of signal strength 12/8/2011 7:22:48 PM |

Ernie: Dipshit, the "integrated experience" is referring to the XBL Gold paid service.
Quote : | "Holy fucking shit! I am shocked. You think that something Microsoft did is a good idea. Let me alert the media!" |
The numbers speak for themselves. If it wasn't a good idea, then the platform wouldn't be growing. You can feel free to not like the strategy, but you are being ignorant to say its stupid.
Quote : | "Oh shut your face. Talking about the sales numbers of the Xbox as a media machine makes about as much sense as including the Ford Mustang in discussions about top selling mp3 players. Just because it includes that feature, doesn't mean that the sales numbers are representative of anyone wanting or using it primarily for that purpose." |
Or you could look at the attach rate numbers over the last 5 years, and you know, actually be able to draw some real conclusions. The attach rate for the PS3 and Wii have risen steadily over the last 5 years. Which means fewer new consoles are being sold in relation to games sold (fewer new users, existing users continuing to buy new games). The attach rate for the 360 has however been declining YOY for the past 3 years. Which means more consoles are being sold, with comparatively fewer games per console.
Console sales and XBL subscriptions continue to grow, while attach rate per console continues to fall. Why? Feel free to draw your own conclusions, but this is not an apples to oranges discussion (or Mustangs to MP3 players as you so stupidly put it).
btw, have you seen all the content partners in the new dashboard? There's plenty of freebees there besides Hulu and Netflix. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/partners12/8/2011 9:38:40 PM |

there's nothing on there free with Gold that isn't already free on any other content device you don't have to pay a subscription for 12/8/2011 10:02:41 PM |

That may be the first time I've ever seen someone try to spin a declining attach rate as a positive thing. Are you really running out of straws to grasp?
And, at the risk of accidentally turning this into an actual "which console is better" discussion, I do have to wonder how many of the new console purchases are from people like me. I just bought my 3rd Xbox after the first 2 crapped out on me. I should mention that my first Wii and PS3s are still doing just fine. I'm not trying to say that the Xbox isn't the best console of the three, because I personally think it is, but I do wonder how the sales numbers would look if they didn't have an absolutely horrendous track record of working for more than a couple of years at a time.
Of course, I wouldn't be surprised to have Noen come along and say that planned console failure is just part of Microsoft's brilliant sales strategy and he completely supports it. 12/8/2011 10:26:07 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^It (lower attach rate at end of lifecycle) is actually a positive thing from a total market perspective. Even with the lower attach rate, the games outsell every other console (because there are more total consoles). And I'll bet anything MS makes a lot more money from XBL subscriptions than they do from licensing. It just means the 360 is reaching new consumers who aren't hardcore gamers (or possibly even gamers at all). Again look at the trending.
For the console failures, there are still quite a few. Console failure has gotten significantly better, but it's still horrific (42.4% in 2010 to 18% in 2011). At least the original models have the 3yr warranties on them. Mine RROD'd and was still well under warranty.
Did you try calling MS and bitching about a replacement (if yours was out of warranty?) That has worked for a LOT of people I know.
Fortunately the Slim 360's have completely fixed the problems, with failure rates of 1.2% in both 2010 and 2011. This puts it right on par with the PS3 slim and Wii.
So, yeah it probably has had some effect this year in terms of console sales, but I would guess that the old-gen models will pretty much fall off the charts next year.

Quote : | "The way things normally go in my mental process is that I will make a claim, and then I will feel bad about making a claim because who am I really, and I will go back to verify the original claim in a miasma of guilt. In this case, I’m still right: the UI conception of the Xbox is now substantially friendlier to Kinect while injecting tremendous ambiguities for those vile, subterranean mutants still addicted to the use of primitive controllers.
Between rigorously metered “screen time” for my larvae and British Mysteries watched in the evening with my absolute equal, Netflix gets used on the daily. That’s why I keep coming back to this: for my house and three fourths of everyone in it, the Xbox is a Netflix Machine. You’ll see how you’ve actually lost functionality when you use it; make the mistake of lingering too long on any item, and the already cluttered mess crowds in further. I love “Metro,” what Microsoft calls their “Design Language.” I’m in love with Gabe’s phone, and in those places where Metro actually manifests in a clean, functional dash I welcome it. But they’re not even following their own playbook on this one: it countermands every mote of their supposed philosophy so completely that you wonder who actually made it.
The proliferation of accurate, powerful voice commands in the user interface (as opposed to using my hand to select a menu so I can select a menu so I can select another menu) is the good part of the update that I can cling to and say “this, this.” Voice commands are an every day thing in my house, we want that. But what they’ve done here is strange, and this is bad; that they don’t seem to understand it’s strange is an order of magnitude worse. " |

Does anybody know if you can copy Xbox Live Arcade games to a memory stick and play them on other Xboxes? I know the last time I tried it, years ago, you could do it, but you basically had to recover your entire profile to the other Xbox and it took several hours. Now that it's possible to copy move your profile to a memory stick, would I be able to buy, say, the new NFL Blitz game on my Xbox, and then copy it, and my profile onto a memory stick and take it over to a friend's house to play? I know it won't let you do that with disc based games games copied to memory sticks, even if you have the original disc. Is it the same way with downloaded games too?] 1/6/2012 6:19:45 PM |

Got the new Your Shape 2012 game on sale for $30, probably would be worth a trade in for anybody with the original for the Boot Camp classes alone, they're hilarious with cheesy DI lines and explosions and helicopters and nonstop workouts with no breaks.
It's pretty much the old game with a better interface, and a lot more variety, like 'run the world,' Boot Camp, and dance classes along with the addition of floor exercises like pushups and situps, which have decent detection for me at least. 'Run the world' makes jogging in place a little less boring running through virtual tron-like city streets with info waypoints and interval challenges, but I haven't gotten through that much to really speak to all the different classes and workouts. 1/7/2012 2:44:53 PM |

Quote : | "Xbox 720, Xbox Loop -- whatever Microsoft ends up calling it, that hot rod of a console looks to be on deck for a late fall 2013 release. According to IGN's sources, this successor to the Redmond gaming throne is purported to pack a GPU based on AMD's 6000 series of chips and will boast silicon circuitry that catapults its performance past Nintendo's upcoming Wii U by 20 percent. If you're looking for a more apples to green X's comparison, this next-gen console's graphical capabilities are also reportedly six times greater than its 360 progenitor. While MS is likely holding back its monstrous new platform for a big E3 reveal, it appears the company's still whittling down its spec list, with dev kits to be issued later this August. No mention was made of its rumored Kinect 2 integration, but we're more than certain that famous hacking tech will be front and center." |

Making the system unable to play used games would make consumers hate them and publishers love them.
Problem with that is the publishers are going to publish games for xbox anyway, while alienating customers would have a serious negative impact on sales.
No chance this happens. 2/6/2012 5:54:49 PM |
