Wow... Just wow...
You know what Stein? You're right. I concede. Lowe was incorrect. You are perfectly within your rights to point it out. Congratulations on calling Sid out for praising a player that didn't deserve it. You really are quite sharp. It's dedicated fans like you that keep us informed on every mistake our coach makes. God forbid we let anything slide. It's important that we throw Sid under the bus for ALL his mistakes, not just some. We wouldn't want anyone to get the silly notion that the guy might actually turn things around.
In fact, I had a Sidney Lowe circle jerk scheduled for tonight, but you know what? I'm calling it off. Yep, no circle jerk for me. I'm done cumming on all the straws I've grasped defending Lowe these past 3 years. I have seen the light. From now on, I'm going to be just like you - an obnoxious dickbag that thinks its newsworthy that a coach he hates hates ::gasp:: overstated his praise for the contributions of one of his players. Yeah, who cares if that guy represents your school. You gotta make sure they don't get any undue praise. That would be SO freakin' terrible.
Go to hell pal. Say hi to Carolina when you get there... 5/5/2009 4:13:04 PM |

Quote : | "n January of 1971, the Fordham University Rams played a basketball game against the University of Massachusetts Redmen. The game was in Amherst, at the legendary arena known as the Cage, where the Redmen hadn’t lost since December of 1969. Their record was 11–1. The Redmen’s star was none other than Julius Erving—Dr. J. The UMass team was very, very good. Fordham, by contrast, was a team of scrappy kids from the Bronx and Brooklyn. Their center had torn up his knee the first week of the season, which meant that their tallest player was six feet five. Their starting forward—and forwards are typically almost as tall as centers—was Charlie Yelverton, who was six feet two. But from the opening buzzer the Rams launched a full-court press, and never let up. “We jumped out to a thirteen-to-six lead, and it was a war the rest of the way,” Digger Phelps, the Fordham coach at the time, recalls. “These were tough city kids. We played you ninety-four feet. We knew that sooner or later we were going to make you crack.” Phelps sent in one indefatigable Irish or Italian kid from the Bronx after another to guard Erving, and, one by one, the indefatigable Irish and Italian kids fouled out. None of them were as good as Erving. It didn’t matter. Fordham won, 87–79.
In the world of basketball, there is one story after another like this about legendary games where David used the full-court press to beat Goliath. Yet the puzzle of the press is that it has never become popular. People look at upsets like Fordham over UMass and call them flukes. Basketball sages point out that the press can be beaten by a well-coached team with adept ball handlers and astute passers—and that is true. Ranadivé readily admitted that all an opposing team had to do to beat Redwood City was press back: the girls were not good enough to handle their own medicine. Playing insurgent basketball did not guarantee victory. It was simply the best chance an underdog had of beating Goliath. If Fordham had played UMass the conventional way, it would have lost by thirty points. And yet somehow that lesson has escaped the basketball establishment.
What did Digger Phelps do, the season after his stunning upset of UMass? He never used the full-court press the same way again. The UMass coach, Jack Leaman, was humbled in his own gym by a bunch of street kids. Did he learn from his defeat and use the press himself the next time he had a team of underdogs? He did not.
The only person who seemed to have absorbed the lessons of that game was a skinny little guard on the UMass freshman team named Rick Pitino. He didn’t play that day. He watched, and his eyes grew wide. Even now, thirty-eight years later, he can name, from memory, nearly every player on the Fordham team: Yelverton, Sullivan, Mainor, Charles, Zambetti. “They came in with the most unbelievable pressing team I’d ever seen,” Pitino said. “Five guys between six feet five and six feet. It was unbelievable how they covered ground. I studied it. There is no way they should have beaten us. Nobody beat us at the Cage.”
Pitino became the head coach at Boston University in 1978, when he was twenty-five years old, and used the press to take the school to its first N.C.A.A. tournament appearance in twenty-four years. At his next head-coaching stop, Providence College, Pitino took over a team that had gone 11–20 the year before. The players were short and almost entirely devoid of talent—a carbon copy of the Fordham Rams. They pressed, and ended up one game away from playing for the national championship. At the University of Kentucky, in the mid-nineteen-nineties, Pitino took his team to the Final Four three times—and won a national championship—with full-court pressure, and then rode the full-court press back to the Final Four in 2005, as the coach at the University of Louisville. This year, his Louisville team entered the N.C.A.A. tournament ranked No. 1 in the land. College coaches of Pitino’s calibre typically have had numerous players who have gone on to be bona-fide all-stars at the professional level. In his many years of coaching, Pitino has had one, Antoine Walker. It doesn’t matter. Every year, he racks up more and more victories." |

^ the team HAD chemistry last year. The lack of winning last year had everything to do with talent and experience, though I'll concede that the Pack started slowly in part to the shuffling line-up. However, the "open competition" mentality has the returning players ready to go for this year.
Lowe hasn't just increased the talent with this year's class. He's upped the overall character of his team. Deshawn Painter looks like the only potential "headcase," but having dealt with Fells and Costner I'm confident Lowe is up to the task.
We'll start slow next year, but look for a strong finish similar to 2007 5/14/2009 9:05:59 AM |

there was a little bit of chemistry, but I really want to see an increase in work ethic from our team. Dive for balls, don't loaf and cry like a baby when you aren't making shots (Costner), just work harder. I want to see a fight from our team this year. It is like when you are under the basket and you have the open shot instead of laying it upk, make the extra effort and flush it down. 5/14/2009 9:11:55 AM |

They have been relevant, we have not.
They had a couple down years.
We've had a couple down decades.

well it also has alot to do with my frustration with our offense. I really like more away from the ball movement than this one-on-one game that we were involved with alot last year because it always seemed to end with a low percentage jump shot with someone in the players face that we mostly missed.

In extreme general terms, he's right. How many not in the Top 5-10 in their high school class have had that kind of impact? How many on teams that didn't even qualify for the NIT last season? Zo should have the biggest impact.
Lowe got a great class and my expectations have slightly risen for this year. I see NIT again. Still, his legacy at State will be determined in TWO years. I'm optimistic at this point, again... I'm still not sold on his coaching ability one bit, but he did a GREAT job rounding out this recruiting class after we lost out on the Big 3...

B/c having seniors is what wins ballgames nowadays right? Right? B/c when it comes to building a competitive team, every coach on the planet would take of our awesome trio of "seniors" (Costner, Fells, McCauley) over, say, Jeff Teague (Sophomore), Al-Farouq Aminu (Freshman), and James Johnson (Sophomore). Nevermind the fact that all three of those WF players could potentially leave this year for the NBA, whereas our guys will be fortunate to bounce around European leagues.
Oh and let's not forget WF's pair talented juniors either. There's Ish Smith, (mentor to Jeff Teague) and LD Williams (team captain for the past two seasons). Upperclassmen ball handler count: WF - 2, NCSU - Zero.
But what the fuck do I know? I bet every sports writer/analyst/etc. saw things your way and subsequently predicted that NC State would have a great season. You know, b/c of all that talent on our team right? Right?
Wait, they didn't? What about the upper half of the ACC? Middle? Oh, you mean NOBODY thought NC State would have a decent season? Well, that is except for the NC State homers of course... and also the selfish, judgmental douchbags that expected State to win simply b/c "that's what a 3rd year coach is supposed to do regardless of the circumstances." But everybody else expected a tough season? Really? But hey, what do all the experts who follow the game for a living know, right? Right?
Dude... just give it up…5/14/2009 12:51:22 PM |

Irrelevant, and the onus is on Floyd here, not Mayo.
But Mayo averaged, what, 20 points a game? Can you ask for better production out of a freshman? Is Painter going to do that? Because that was my point, that Painter shouldn't dramatically increase anyone's expectations (which was what Boozie was implying).
Boozie tried to make out Lowe supporters as already clearing a space for a banner next year because we hauled in a great class. I was just calling him a moron, that's all.5/14/2009 2:23:03 PM |

Mayo averaged a ton of points, correct, but he also took a ton of shots each game to get those points. You can't ask for better production but you can damn sure ask for better efficiency...plus I think he averaged almost 4 TO's a game (his assist to turnover ratio was 0.9:1). And I don't think Painter is going to need to average 20 points a game for us to have a big impact. For me it's not really a dramatic increase in expectations it's just that I thought we might be terrible and now I think we might be decent.
