even if its going off of stars and ignoring our needs, we should still never be in the bottom 2

I'm totally fine with our recruiting class. We basically got an entire team, with extras in positions of need. And I am comfortable with the staff's ability to go out and find underated talent.

TOB has never been and will never be a great recruiter. Plus anytime we land a decent recruiter they stay for 1 year and go to greener pastures. As long as TOB can win 8-9 games a year and beat UNC with his 2* talent, then I'll take it.

i know who we are. despite what some of you people seem to think, State having 8 or 9 wins in a season is a freakin anomaly. sure, i'd love for that to be below our standards, but it isn't.

ssly though? 2nd worst recruiting class in the conference? Worse than Duke, a team that hasnt been to a bowl game in god knows how long?

I mean im not saying we should be competing with the top 20 programs in recruiting, but goddamn, we have some of the nicest facilities around and have a loyal fanbase. Let's not sell ourselves short. We're not a top tier football program in the ACC, but we shouldnt be out recruited by every team in the big East except for Uconn and Cuse, the entire big 10, pac 10, SEC, 3-4 teams in conf USA, etc etc.

Wtf arent we selling that everyone else is. We deserve better than this, not a bunch of top recruits or an annual top 25 class, but at least something respectable.

this shit is a joke. Wth classes like these and when TOB is gone in the next couple of years, the cupboards will be bare and we'll be the bottomfeeders of the ACC.

Sorry for the vent, but I just dont understand how a team like Marshall can out recruit us.

i fully expect the blah blah blah, TOB finds 2* recruits and makes them better blah blah. This is an excuse that we make to make ourselves feel better. Every program hits some home runs on lesser recruited players, but I'd strongly argue that the 4* and 5* players have more on the field success than the 1*, 2*,3*(obvious) so why are we as fans content settling with these?

fuck it im going to bed

Agreed. I was never particularly happy with the Tom O'Brien hire. You don't fire a mediocre to get a slightly less mediocre coach.

TOB is old, he will be retired in 5 years. I guess the hope was that he would build a consistent winner and then we could land a great hire. I don't see that happening because of poor recruiting.

Recruiting matters in college football, it matters A LOT. If you run a weird scheme you can minimize the importance of talent, but if you run standard sets on offense and defense you will lose at least 4 games a year being out-athleted. That's going to happen to us. We'll beat the teams we're "supposed to beat" most of the time at home. We'll lose a lot on the road, and we'll only rarely win a game against a superior opponent.

We're a perennial 7-5 team (4-4), and will remain so with O'Brien as our HC.

^ I thought that was TOB's reason for leaving BC. If I remember correctly, he said that there wasn't enough potential to make BC a championship team and that he could get better recruits at NC State and make a top 10 team.

We got trolled

Wait, so 2 seasons with mostly TOB's players we win 9 and 8 games, and yet we are still questioning his recruiting? I love how 7-5 is what to expect, when we have beaten that two years running and are set up for another good year in 2012.

I guess you guys wanted to keep Sidney Lowe too since his recruiting was so awesome!

STFU already

EDIT: You guys are opposed to joining the SEC, but you want top notch recruiting in football, makes no sense.

Noones arguing that 4 and 5* players aren't more likely to have an impact that 2 and 3*s. But in TOB's 4 and 5th year, with TOB's recruits, he's slowly improved to 9-4 and 8-5 and two bowl wins in a row.

I'm not sure why you think the "cupboard will be bare" when TOB leaves. He's recruited two solid teams in a row. He'll probably be gone in a few years, we'll have a solid foundation, and hopefully we can get a "flashier" coach who can pull in more 4 and 5*s. But to be honest, I kinda like knowing we've got a coach who seems to have some integrity, and won't allow just any "punk" or "thug" on the team.

Why am I content with this? Because I try not to let things upset me that I can't control. And I'm content with 9-4, 8-5, and two bowl wins in a row. I've seen steady improvement, and think we can continue to improve, hopefully to a conference championship.

Last year we were significantly worse than the year before. Losing Russell Wilson was a big reason why. Yes, we were 8-5 after our bowl win, but we had to win our last 2 games just to be bowl eligible, because we couldn't count our victory over FCS school, Liberty.

Let's not act like last year was great. It wasn't. We were 7-5 (4-4) and then won a bowl game. Whoopity do.

from a couple posters on PP:

Quote :
"LB Robert Caldwell is a JUCO player at College of the Desert in CA. He also went to HS in CA. At 6'3 245 and running a 4.7 he is a big guy. He hits hard, sheds blocks really well, and has great burst. He is making his official visit this weekend along with Drew Davis. It is pretty much down to us and Iowa, who wants him at DE and has been recruiting him longer, and unless he is completely blown away this weekend he will probably commit to Iowa next week. A decision could come as early at Monday. Caldwell will have 3 years to play 2. He could come in and give immediate depth at MLB and work with Sterling Lucas. Video below:

How do you figure it was "significantly worse"? I'd have to disagree, I don't think we missed RW much, I think the biggest reason we got off to a slow start may be due to the fact that over half of the defensive line two-deep was injured for multiple games, including our defensive captain sweezy and manning.

no, we shouldn't.

it sucks, but the upside is that our staff has proven that they can coach up these players well beyond their star ratings.

but if it makes you feel better, you should go out and talk shit to all the recruits who didn't choose state on twitter.

or post on message boards that everyone should be fired. whatever grills your cheese.

Eye test. We were completely uncompetitive against FSU, we got our heads handed to us on national TV against Cinci-fucking-natti, we looked uninspired in all of our losses, and we looked flat way too often in some of our wins. We had a worse conference record than the previous year and a worse overall record. Oh, and we continue to be abysmal on the road.

I'm not saying we were terrible, but 2011 was not an improvement over 2010, and I expect pretty similar results in 2012.

I tell you what, I'm going to predict that we finish 7-6 (4-4) for 2012 +/- 1 game. Furthermore I'll predict that we will go 3-2 out of conference with our 2 wins coming against S. Alabama and the Citadel, and whatever other shitty team we shoehorn into the middle of our conference schedule. If however it's a name school or a decent school on the road we'll lose.

Care to go out on a limb and predict that we'll do significantly better or worse?

We had decent depth on the defensive line, the problem was that they went out with injuries too.

And it seems we're brining in five solid defensive linemen next year, including Owino, highly heralded 3* Hooker, and 4* Whitehead.

I've never understood the mentality that says 8 wins is good. You either play to win the conference or why bother? Settling for ok or slightly better than average is a loser's mentality.

Say what you will about the fanbases at places like Tennessee or Nebraska, but at least they care and they're pushing their schools to be the best. If the coach there can't hack it they don't last very long. At NCSU as long as you're at .500 or better and you beat UNC about half the time you can be secure in your job.

Nobody's saying that. But to take a program that has never had any major success in it's entire history to the next level ain't going to happen quickly.

not without cheating.

The best we can hope for is several years of 8-9 wins a year under TOB until he retires and hope that that foundation is enough to attract a proven coach that can then take us to the next level.

We're never getting a Nick Saban type coach at NC State. we can't afford it, and even if we could, they wouldn't come.
