might not be completely accurate, but if the offensive team has the ball and gets a penalty (either with <1 or <2 minutes left in the half) and they dont have any timeouts, there is a 10-second runoff....so if there's a penalty with 14 seconds, the clock would go down to 4 seconds, or if there are <=10 seconds, the game would be over if there were an offensive penalty) 1/3/2011 3:42:32 PM |

It's so the offense can't get an unfair time stoppage from an illegal motion, false start, or other offensive penalty. 1/3/2011 3:46:25 PM |

i know the teams we're effectively off the field in that Tenn/LSU game but why didn't they force LSU to kick it? Tennessee (with a miracle) could have tied it on the PAT..? 1/3/2011 3:51:58 PM |
izzykareem All American 2621 Posts user info edit post |
ah right because if you wanted to stop the clock u could just get a penalty and a 5yarder is not really gonna change that much for a FG kick (depending on where you are of course). Although i don't really have a problem with stopping the clock, those are the rules, currently, UNC was just damn fortunate to get the ball snapped with 1 tick.
as many UT fans stated, if UT could have just gotten a first down on the prior drive, we could all be sitting back laughing at UNC more, but...nope 1/3/2011 3:54:35 PM |

^^ and not to rehash the whole argument over in the college football thread, in unc's case it probably should have been a 15 yard penalty instead of 5, because not only were players running off the field, the kicker and holder were in position on the play (illegal participation). In that case it would have a significant effect on the field goal distance. either way, unc lucked out on a loophole 1/3/2011 4:13:11 PM |
NCSUMEB All American 2530 Posts user info edit post |
The bigger question is the official review people(s) not being able to count to 12. UNC-CHeat used 12 players (not including the idiots running off the field) in that play, that's a 15 yard penalty, not 5. Little bit of a difference between a 41 and 51 yard kick when the clock is signaled on the ready for play by the official over the ball. And before the "it was good from 60" crowd come out, the mindset, trajectory of a kick are all variables excluded from the argument yet remain present in any kicking situation. 1/3/2011 4:14:01 PM |

I think it's under 2 min.
It was put in place so the offense couldn't intentionally get a penalty to stop time. UNC didn't do it on purpose, they were just stupid. It came down as to who would play dumber and it turns out it was Tennessee.1/3/2011 4:16:48 PM |

woah, i didn't realize it was/should have been illegal participation, there must have been 14 Holes on the field when he spiked it.
just counted there is between 14 and 16 players on the field when Yates spikes the ball

i can't imagine the moaning and bitching we'd have to endure if we beat them in a game like that. It was already bad enough that we had a miracle catch (at least it was a real play). 1/3/2011 4:25:15 PM |

Correct me if I'm wrong:
Under the current rules, the clock stops and the penalty is enforced. If a team realizes the clock will expire before the can get the next play off, they can commit any penalty to stop the clock. So if I have a 25 yard FG that I won't get off, I can just punch someone in the other team in the face, get the 15 yard penalty and still have a manageable 40 yarder to win the game.
I would love to see this happen. 1/3/2011 4:26:32 PM |

i had no idea that the "running out of bounds then touching the ball" rule fell under illegal participation. 15 yards seems really excessive for something like that, especially when its almost always inadvertent 1/3/2011 4:45:35 PM |
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah...but Barth probably nails that kick with an extra 10 yards.
Bottom line is that UNC won the game fair and square. They are lucky, however, that college football doesn't have the NFL rule where you run off 10 seconds for an offensive penalty like that. I couldn't believe that rule isn't on the college level...and because of it, UNC escapes with a narrow victory over a pretty shitty Tennessee team. 1/3/2011 5:41:46 PM |
