As to the argument that people are scared to play K and Roy:

If you coach in the ACC you have to play K and Roy.
If you coach in the SEC you have to play Calipari and Donovan.
If you coach in the Big East you have to play Calhoun, Boeheim, Pitino, Wright, etc.
If you coach in the Big 12 you have to play Self and Barnes.
If you coach in the Big 10 you have to play Izzo, Matta, Ryan, Belein, etc.
If you coach in the Pac 10 you have to play Howland and Miller.

Why would anyone ever coach in a high-major conference?!?!

I hate this argument. While it may be true that some candidates would be scared off by having Duke and UNC 20 miles away, our location is a blessing in disguise. We shouldn't have to settle for a coach who is intimidated by Duke and UNC. Our next coach should want the challenge of restoring our rich history and tradition.

It wasn't that long ago that Duke was the whipping boy of the triangle. Coach K took the Duke job knowing what he was getting into, and we all know how this has turned out. I think NC State has the same potential that Duke had when Coach K was first hired.

i am sure duke did not have the fan base we do at that time. k was young and looking for a good job and any job in the acc at that time would have been a step up. just like state would be a step up for most mid majors. bottom line is this, our fans expect to win, our ad is a hard ass, and you have to be in the media back ground of k and roy. this is not as desirable of a job as we all think. i am red and white like everyone else but i also am trying to be realistic and look at the whole picture.

Okay guys here is a serious post about what we DO know.

1) Today Shaka Smart, Gregg Marshall, and Mick Cronin were all told they had been released from the coaching search as we had eliminated them from contention. None of these three were offered the job despite the false reports out there. Think for a second with your brains do you really think we offered 3 separate coaches in the span of a day that might say No? Do you also think that three coaches (2 of which are at shitty programs) would say no to a huge raise and high profile program with amazing facilities. Hell no. You don't go from Calipari almost saying yes to Gregg Marshall saying no. This is a fact, these guys were released from the search. Our administration has even said so.

2) Billy Donovan was in Raleighdespite Telep's reports. Too many people saw him here for that to be denied including somone i know who personally saw him. That's a fact, period. Donovan was a target from the get-go. That's a fact, period. NCSU has better facilities and history than UF, period. We ARE working on a new apparel deal that is a fact, period. Donovan has not yet announced he will return to Florida and that is also a fact, period.

As for unverified rumors Donovan is the one who put his name in the running initially, Donovan is waiting until we get the apparel deal ironed out, there is a $42 million - 10 year Godfather offer on the table.

As for remaining facts, Donovan has had limited success at UF since the titles, he has looked to leave Florida twice in the past 4 seasons, and he is not 100% happy being 2nd fiddle at Florida.


I'm not saying we ARE getting Donovan. But it's almost guaranteed one of the following scenarios:

1) He is our #1 target at this point and we have an assured contingency plan if he falls through.

2) He's already agreed in principle and we are days, hours, or minutes away from the announcement that Billy Donovan is the head coach of NC State.

3) Someone not named Billy Donovan has already accepted the job and we have agreed to terms and have released the others from the search.

There is absolutely no other way we just released all three of those other candidates from the search at the same time if one of those three scenarios is not true.

This gives them the chance to re-negotiate with their current schools before we make our announcement.

I think it's 50-50.

What we do know is that someone has committed to being the NC State coach and he beat Marshall, Shaka, and Cronin for the job so he can't be someone shitty.

Donovan fits that bill and Donovan has not announced he's returning to Florida. He was also seen in Raleigh. Why is any of this hard to piece together? Donovan is absolutely an option.

Monte Towe, a good customer of ours at Schoolkids, came in to the store this past weekend and mentioned (possibly accidentally) a trip he'd taken in the last week to Gainesville, FL. When he was asked why, he said he was seeing a concert with a friend.

At the very least, State went aggressively after Donovan. FWIW.

I would love for Donovan to come here, and I fell into the rumor mill trap when speculation was big last week, but after listening to what Telep and David Glenn said (along with several other media outlets) I was convinced that he is not leaving Florida.

Just because he has been courted the last few years by the Orlando Magic and Kentucky (bigger name programs with much much more money than us) doesnt mean he wants to leave Florida. If he did, he would've jumped ship. Oh yeah, and they have great facilities too
