Oh absolutely. Say $150 for a used 10/22, $300 stock, $250 barrel... That's about $700 already for a .22 plinker. Then I suppose you would want to do a trigger job, another $75? What about a sling? $15? Then there's optic and ring options too. Impressive rig for sure, however, it's not cheap to build.

i know most of you guys are probably in the raleigh area, and that isnt out of the question but...

i live in charlotte and frequent the winston-salem area and im looking for reputable gunsmiths. someone you would trust a trigger job/scope mount to with a $1k+ gun.

i dont want someone who is going to scratch and ding it up or do an otherwise shit job. i would do it myself but dont have all the tools required. also, a ruger no 1 is kind of an odd trigger to work on anyway, so best to leave it to someone non-clueless.

thanks for any leads you might have! id like some suggestions so i can start calling around.

no it came with the ruger fitted rings.

i dont have a way to level the crosshairs.

i know i cant do the trigger so i figured kill two birds with one stone instead of ordering any special tools im going to use once.

^^Set the gun in a vise with just the bottom half of the rings mounted. Take a small household level and use that to level the gun/rings in the vise. Now place the scope in the rings and loosely mount the top half of the rings (making sure not to knock the gun off level in the process) and take the same level and use it on the top of the scope cap to level the scope.

You can do final adjustments by picking up the gun and just looking through it to see if its level.

I get it level in the gun vise like brandon describes then use a vertical line that I know is plumb to look through the scope and level it up. Corner of a house works.

I do basically the same thing but I use a bipod because I don't have a vice.
I used to use door frames til I checked the one I was using and found it wasn't vertical. Now I use a plumb bob.

It's not bad if you want to put an electronic sight or something on it. I'd skip it and get something that includes a sight on the gasblock and a detachable carry handle unless you have a very specific build in mind. The price is pretty average.

Unless you want a rustbucket, reblue it. If it's a good gun, have it hot-dipped. If it's cheap or relatively unimportant, Oxpho-Blue works really well for a quick protective layer.

^^^I have polished a few parts on some rifles that the blue was bad on. Started with 400 grit sandpaper, 600, 1000, 2500 then final polish with some sort of metal polish. After the metal polish, if you put some automotive paint sealant on it, the newly polished finish wont rust (as quick).

I'm thinking about getting a semi-auto .308 rifle with my next bonus check, and I'm trying to determine what to get. I'm leaning heavily towards a DPMS 308 with a bull barrel and an ACOG scope, but I'd like to see if anyone has any other recommendations regarding an M1A or an FAL with an ACOG or some other similar optics system. I kind of like the look of the FAL, and it's been battle tested by dozens of different countries. I'm just not sure if it will be as accurate as I would like. I'd like to get something with 1MOA or better, so that might knock the FAL off the table.

Is there another 308 rifle I'm overlooking in the under $2,000 price range? If money was no object, I'd probably be looking at an SR-25 or a SCAR-17S.

^^^ That is what I would get if I had to do it over again. My brother in law has one and it is a tack driver, I have an Armalite and it definitely gets the job done too but you are more limited on parts since a lot of parts that aren't Armalite won't fit properly.

I can't imagine the R-25 being cheaper than a DPMS due to the remington badging on it, even though DPMS makes the gun for Remington. I think I can get a more accurate gun from DPMS directly for the same money. I'm not a big fan of Remington build quality either, but hopefully that's not an issue with DPMS assembling the guns.

Then again, I bought a Ruger SR556 because it was the setup I wanted and had the ruger name on it.

at least they didn't give the R-25 to Bushmaster like they did their R-15s. I don't know why they would contract out one of the worst AR-15 platforms and put their name on it, but I guess they're trying to pushing low cost guns for the masses for that particular market.

I guess I should also mention that I'm left handed, which is part of the reason I'd rather build a 308 rifle on a semi-auto platform instead of a bolt action. operating a right-handed safety with your left hand is no problem, since you just swipe it with your trigger finger and commence to shooting. With that in mind, any gun I shoot will need to have an ejector ramp to kick the brass out in front of the gun instead of back. I didn't see that as an option on the R-25, but it's also not an option on a lot of precision shooting Armalite and DPMS builds either.

I might be looking at building one from the ground up.

they're owned the same, but the manufacturing processes they had in place beforehand haven't changed much. Whatever shitty equipment that produced all of those halfass bushmasters a decade ago will still be in use.

I don't like buying left handed guns for several reasons. It's harder to resell them, so if I don't like it I could be stuck with it. I also like to let other people try my stuff out at the range, teaching new shooters or letting friends try out different setups. It's hard to do that with a left handed gun.

I like rolling block Ruger Model 1's for a good ambidextrous hunting platform, but I want my next purchase to be something that could be used for both hunting and apocalyptic scenarios.
