Billy Donovan is absolutely an option.
Has he been released from the search yet officially? No.
Has he said he's returning to Florida yet officially? No.
He's out there.
We know that whoever it is down to is higher profile than Shaka, Cronin, and Marshall.
How many coaches that realistically could move are higher than those three? 5? 10? 15?
Now how many have been in our coaching search the whole way? 3. Barnes, Miller, Donovan.
If its not Donovan then its someone that sure as hell hasnt had their name floated around at all and in this day and age thats rare.
Again, I think its 50-50 we get Donovan, but its 95% we've got a top notch coach locked up theres no other reason for us to throw out 3 coaches who were on our list to this point that would all arguably be good hires. 4/4/2011 8:08:14 PM |

Using this logic, you are also indicating that Phil Jackson, Coach K, and Gregg Popovich are all prominent names for our coaching vacancy also.

face, please explain both a) what evidence you have that Smart was "released" from the State coaching search instead of Shaka simply turning NC State down, and b) Where, specifically, your friend saw Donovan.
Also, didn't the VCU AD (I know he's public enemy #1 right now, but still) explicitly state that State made Smart an offer? What incentive would he have to say that unless it were true? 4/4/2011 8:16:00 PM |

To justify the salary increase? To build up hype. Don't get me wrong I think he received an offer and we are FUCKED but I think these are possible excuses.
However I am very very happy that we will not be getting that piece of shit gregggggg and I fully believe that Yow turned him down no matter how he and his AD spin it. Fuck that dude.

True. But I feel like nobody from VCU is going to complain about Smart getting a big raise after getting the team to the Final Four (other than maybe alumni who don't care about basketball/sports at all). I definitely see your point, though.4/4/2011 8:25:28 PM |

actually i just opened a bottle of Green Label because it felt like a reason to celebrate because we are so close to making a splash.
Im going to switch to red label after this glass though saving the real party for when we announce our hire.
All i know is we turned down three solid candidates today. Debbie is not an idiot she would not tell them they were off the list if we didnt have SOMEONE lined up. You dont eliminate guys until you are ready to make a hire or you know you decide they are not viable candidates. There is no fucking way all three of those were not viable candidates. 4/4/2011 8:25:58 PM |

You can't make a hard switch from Green label to Red label like that. You have to at least throw a Black label in the middle to ease the transition.4/4/2011 8:29:44 PM |

The other possibility is Yow basically decided we aren't overpaying for a mid major coach who hasn't proven they can win at a top level yet other than a magical tourney run. These three thought we were desperate and willing to overpay and Yow pretty much said fuck you.4/4/2011 8:30:37 PM |

#1 our athletics dept said shaka was not offered. I believe this because hes too unproven and young and doesnt have the experience. He was a huge leap of faith really. Just not ready for this level. We're talking about a middle to upper tier Colonial team for gods sake.
#2 i have a text to buddy right now. he said campus and that was good enough for me, i am trying to clarify now. Does anyone really believe Donovan wasnt a candidate from the get-go? Im not saying its a done deal im saying someone is all but a done deal and Donovan is definitely a possibility. 4/4/2011 8:31:33 PM |

^^ i hadnt considered that possibility. That is a possibility i guess but i have to believe she wouldnt have told them all three they were out until she found someone willing to say yes for significantly less money.
Look at it from Yows perspective would she rather overpay for a coach she believes in or pay fair value for a coach she might deem acceptable? I think shed overpay. She wants to make her mark. 4/4/2011 8:33:42 PM |

the hewitt contract was virtually unprecendented and there was no way to ever terminate the deal without paying him.
This is quite different. 6 years is 6 years. They will pass eventually.
Giving someone like Hewitt a "forever" contract is ridiculous. That kind of shit is reserved for a Coach K type and even that is dangerous 4/4/2011 8:38:19 PM |

I agree with this, part of the objective is to get a great coach, but another major component of the search is not overpaying and financially strapping yourself a-la Ga. Tech.
Why pay a dude like Gregg Marshall 15 or 20 million guaranteed money for 5-7 years. It just doesn't make any sense. Part of the risk of swinging for the fences early is that these mid-major guys think we are desperate. I am guessing that yow presented them a fair offer and they came back with crazy numbers and Yow said fuck off. (although I truly believe that Shaka said no thanks. His offer of 1.2 + incentives is too good a raise not to stay if he feels comfortable)4/4/2011 8:42:52 PM |
