Yeah, I can make him something in black & white that looks like it was a craft project from the 3rd grade.

I shouldn't need to make or get him anything, it should be a free choice that's just me saying "hey you're a great dad and I've had a good year so here's a gift". Instead, at least nowadays, it's like you HAVE to buy them something to earn their appreciation.
