So, Callahan's M3 finally runs again, and looks like everything was done properly. Good night for that.

I am also finally done with the current set of upgrades for the M3, and it's got 3 track events (2 races) planned in the coming weeks. I have to say, after owning two dozen cars in various stages of upgrades, this is my favorite so far, by a long shot.

The current upgrades are H/R springs, bilstein shocks, turner bars, ground control chasis re-inforcement weld in plates (rear subframe, no big deal). Sways are @full stiff, strut tower brace (will get a motorsports lower chasis x brace soon). Replaced a bunch of bushings/control arms, tie rods, etc. and quite the agressive alignment, and am VERY happy. Car feels a bit under powered and a bit undertired upfront (Kumho MX's all around). I was thinking about getting an evo, but I don't know that I can give this up. If I had the space for 2 cars, I'd do that. Next maybe an e46 m3, or more likely an e90 m3/4 if they make one. I may supercharge this car and cage it? Don't know at the moment, but sure hope to track it a lot first. Speaking of, I'm pretty happy about having a "well set up" car on track again, after almost a year of lightly modified/stock cars.

Just wanted to share my happy juices.

I should add, the brakes are a bit touchy now. It's hard to modulate them at below 40-50mph (odd, as usually modulation from higher speeds seems more difficult). Will work on some treshold braking this weekend @Summit Point. I find this interesting, the pads shouldn't be THAT agressive.
Ahmet

EDIT: Callahan, you're welcome and dude I really am happy for you. Seriously.

^^^^i cant stand 225/45/17 up front on 96+ m3. my 96 understeers considerably more than a 95 non-staggered setup. consider getting lower profile tires up front and slightly less tire in the back. these cars dont have THAT much power to require staggered setup.

Lots'a hate going on there. My parents have given me a lot, they didn't buy me a car in quite some time, but they may as well have. I think it's pretty strange that you would wish for all that crap on somebody, simply because they're fortunate, it's all relative...

M3s were given the staggered set up because in 1995, it was the most often totaled (%) new car. Understeer is undeniably safer. My trouble was not only with understeer, it was with a lack of grip in general. Me and Nick (both in e36s) were one of the 3 or so cars in advanced/instructor groups w/out at least R comps, in a field containing ~40 cars. If I'm going to continue tracking this car, I need at least 9 inch wide wheels/R comps front and rear. On the street the car is a delight, it is really a joy to drive. I was supremely dissapointed with it on track, neutral, yes. Easy, yes, fun? Not for me.

As for the EVO, I'm tempted, as I have been for a while. I'm thinking about it, I will consider an EVO, and the Corvette. I need to drive both hard. I can't think of much else.

I... don't know. Going to look at an EVO tonight. I've still got the idea of another set of wheels/r comps in mind as well.

i test drove an '05 few months back and handling precision and on center feel was the best i've ever experienced. then again i didnt get a chance to drive it like i wanted because salesman kept reminding me not to go over 4k since car had like 2k on the odometer . i was like....but the boost doesnt even come on until 3k. needless to say it wasn't a fun test drive.

one thing that bothered me was interior ...PVC grade plastic. maybe new ones are nicer, but still no match for high end germans.

I thought it drove like crap, and was very uncomfortable. However, it's hardcore and (supposedly) very capable, which is what's drawing me to this car. The salesman would not let me take a new or a used one out past 4k rpm, or turn very hard. I don't know how they think somebody is going to buy the car if all it does is be rough, loud and buzzy. Alas, maybe tonight's drive will change my mind.

Mark, I'm driving a private car I saw listed for sale.

2k on the odometer? that means its well passed its break-in period so he should have let go past 4k...unless he was just worried you were going to wreck it lol...

and as far as interior goes...nothing comes close to German cars...but the new IX's look a little nicer than the base lancer. What really does it is the wheel, seats, pedals, and the double-din. everything else is just meh

I've never had this problem with test driving cars...evo or sti...however the sti i took it very easy on since the car i was 'test driving' also happened to be the car i wanted to buy. but with the evo MR i test drove i didn't pound on it but i got pretty close to redline.

i would think track prepped STI would be a better contender than track prepped evo, simply because of rear bias and 50/50 distribution. maybe look into a cheap, used WRX and prep it??

well the evos 50/50 distribution is pretty nice. the few times i've had the car's rear end slide on a turn it almost instantly corrects which is a very nice feeling.

with the STi i'd slide it like crazy with next to no effort which was also fun. but as far as handling and better times, the evo MR takes the prize (between the two)

Watch that video i posted a few days ago that has 2 sti's 3 evo's and a NSX R lined up on a full circuit.

plus the Evo is way more responsive to 'mods'

im talking about subaru having 50/50 weight distribution. evos have 60/40 or something along those lines.

ooh weight...i thought you meant torque

cause with the DCCD in the STi you can lock it at 50/50 torque distribution or i think the MAX is something like 65/35 to the rear

Not really, we were supposed to be given 2 sessions (one on each day), but I only got 1.5 in the same day, the 2nd one w/an "instructor" that kept telling me to catch the oversteer...

PS: I hate this car.

I don't, I'm just frustrated with it. It's a jack of all trades, master of none. It's a great car you can drive everyday, and put on track occasionally. I need a race car as I'm getting tired of the compromises that go along with a street car that you try to compete with.

I don't know. I get in the M3, and I drive it, and it's just lovely, so close to perfect as far as I'm concerned -on the street-. It's one of the most balanced, precise cars I've driven. It was just the car's incredible lack of grip on track that I could not come to terms with. I need to give R comps a chanse. And Dan's right, maybe I am looking for a relatively better place in the field.

Cheap's a relative term, but this car has 180k on it so it won't be a top dollar car either.
