To make it clear, I was going to Raleigh from Morrisville. So I turned left from Chapel hill road to Airport Blvd. 10/8/2013 1:53:18 PM |

I'd show up on your court date and ask for a reduction to 9-over . They might even offer it without being asked--they just want a quick buck and move on to the next case. If they won't play ball, ask for a continuance and go get a traffic lawyer ($200-350). 10/8/2013 1:56:56 PM |

Try going the speed limit. You'll probably get fewer speeding tickets. 10/8/2013 3:08:20 PM |

Yes. I need to drive under the limit. Someone used to tell me that driving a little faster is fine. I think it's not fine now. 10/8/2013 3:19:27 PM |

A little faster is like 5 mph over, you won't get a ticket then. If you have trouble keeping a constant speed definitely aim for just the speed limit and try to pay attention 10/8/2013 3:22:12 PM |

Part of the reason I think it's my car. It's a 03 Taurus, very hard to keep a constant speed. At that time, I finished the long wait at the red light then turned left and speed up. I knew I passed the limit and was about to press the brake. But at that time, the damn police car caught me. It was the same guy who stopped me 7 months ago at exactly the same spot on Airport Blvd! 10/8/2013 3:42:59 PM |

You'll pretty much never get a ticket for less than 10 over, and rarely for less than 15 in most places.
If you already have license and/or insurance points, I'd call a lawyer and see if he can get it dismissed or reduced to a non-moving violation.
If you're going to speed, consider buying a good detector, like Valentine 1 or Passport 8500. 10/8/2013 5:29:07 PM |

I don't want to speed. 10/8/2013 5:48:40 PM |

Then keep it 10-under or less, and you'll be fine. Get a lawyer to fix this one for you. You should get solicitation letters from several soon.
Oh, and stay out of the left lane except when you're passing...and have your pets spayed or neutered. 10/8/2013 5:57:36 PM |

I don't think I was 15 mph faster today. I think only 10 mph, or 12, 13. But he insisted 15. He said he had a radar. 10/8/2013 6:07:42 PM |

Whether you were or weren't has nothing to do with anything. There's a good chance you'll get 9-over if you go to court yourself, which will slightly lessen the fine and reduce the points by 1. There's a good chance you'll get it reduced to a non-moving violation if you hire a lawyer. That might cost a few bucks more upfront , but you'll save in the long run on insurance (and won't endanger your license)
What you have to understand is that this has nothing to do with crime and punishment, standards of evidence, or whatever. It isn't the OJ or Casey Anthony or Zimmerman trial. It's an administrative racket where they take some money from you, and the goal is to get the most money for the least time and effort. They're happy to accept full price by you mailing it in ( zero effort). Usually they'll take a little off if you show up and show that you're not totally passive. Their goal is to sweeten the deal so you don't hire a lawyer. When you hire a lawyer, he doesn't actually do any Johnny Cochrane shit. It's just the threat that he would if the court didn't extend a sufficiently good peace offering. At most, he'll just continue the case a bunch of times and waste the court's time until they cave, or don't want to chance losing altogether by the cop not showing up or the lawyer finding some administrative error like an expired RADAR calibration or qualification. They'd rather collect half of the original fine from you and 1000 other people than have a few lawyers clog up the system and only get full price from a few people. 10/8/2013 6:28:37 PM |

So I have an interesting scenario.
Just got a 87 in a 75 driving through Kansas with my NC license and registration. I'm on my way to start a new job in Oregon and have to get my OR drivers license to drive a company vehicle and will be switching to OR plates to avoid paying property tax (OR has none on personal vehicles).
Would this affect my insurance in Oregon if I just paid the ticket. I'm assuming in OR they'll check my NC record when building my quote. This would be way before my court date in Kansas.
Also what would happen if i didn't pay the ticket? OR will likely pull my NC record when awarding my license be weeks before my Kansas ticket hits the docket. When I'm no show the only info they have is a now defunct Charlotte address and license

I'll pay the ticket but I was really trying decide if I need to get a lawyer to get it reduced. Seems somewhat farfetched that Oregon dmv will receive information on a Kansas ticket for a NC license. I just want to prevent an insurance increase.
The not paying was just out of curiosity as it would seem difficult for the Kansas magistrate to track me down. Got obvious reasons relating to my profession I don't want an unpaid ticket on my record. 3/28/2015 10:30:16 PM |

You're better off in the long run getting a lawyer in Kansas and getting it reduced. I once got a ticket for going 80 in a 70 in TX (2011?) and just paid it off. It still causes my rate to go up some. 3/28/2015 11:50:13 PM |

won't a ticket for anything over 85mph result in NC revoking your license, regardless of what state it happened in? 3/29/2015 9:36:18 AM |
HUR All American 17732 Posts user info edit post |
I think so but... The whole premise here is I'd have my Oregon license and insurance by mid April. So OR would pull my NC dmv history before the court date of my Kansas ticket which is in may.
At that point Kansas would no longer have a valid location so would this affect my Oregon insurance even though Kansas would only be reporting this to NC. 3/29/2015 10:40:38 AM |
