Yeah Horner is really just a range shooter that Herb recruited for dropping threes.........but he has surprised me with some hustle plays under the basket before. He does need to bulk up a lot to really be a threat anywhere besides outside the arc though......... 12/3/2006 9:47:46 PM |

i was happy with the game tonight. sloppy, but an on the road closs ACC loss with 6 players (one a walk on)? Ill take it.
To those of you saying its typical state fan "oh man next year" "if only this guy was healthy"...this stuff really does apply right now. this is a young team with a LOT of potential and a great recruiting class lined up. Similarly with Herb and Amato our recruited players never developed into what they could have been. Herb's offense didnt allow a lot of things to open up for us.
We cant give up hope yet SIX games into Lowe's first season. We do not know how well he develops players, and how players will adapt to his system over the three-four years they are year...yet alone even after ONE year.
These are the hopes, the what ifs. This is what makes it exciting. For the first time in awhile we can actually say "wait until next season" and have a hope that our players will develop and our team IMPROVE, instead of knowing theyll be playing the princeton offense and never truly developing their game.(especially an inside game).
Be a State fan and have some hope. We were PREDICTED to finish last in the ACC if my memory serves me right, and we've played one game. We have plenty of opportunities to still do better than we were supposed to do. Give it time. And by time i mean even more than one season.

coach of the year?, I understand saying that, hell I've said it, but after these young men have play the way they have, I'm not counting them out of anything. besides nieman, we're gonna have the whole team that played today back next year + ferguson, degand, harris, hickson, tracy smith and thomas (possibly one more)
So the "wait till next year" actually applies in this situation 12/4/2006 3:07:57 AM |

meh, JJ Hickson > Ced...........you'll see. I'm happy that Ced went when he did. No great big men leaving last year, so it was a prime time for him to leave on his "potential". Plus, it puts another NC State name in the NBA. We're gonna be good next year....really good. I'm looking forward to it.
And i just read through the last few pages of this thread, and all i can say is wow.......either alot of people just want to get a rise out of each other, or not many know shit about basketball. Before that last 3 by costner, he was 3-7 from 3........Fells was 1-5. Who do you go with? It was short, because costner played 38 fuckin minutes and didnt have any legs left to get lift.
Overall, I'm very pleased with how the game went. Alley oops, gorgeous passes, fresh/soph stepping up in big situations. Im excited to see an undermanned team overachieving where as the past few years ive been pissed off watching superior teams underachieve. 12/4/2006 3:19:10 AM |

People just look like clowns when they compare some dude they haven't even watched play ball (or if they have, it is against high school competition) to someone in the freakin NBA right now.
Its ghey.

Cedric was a helluva player. I can only imagine how good he'd have been if utilized properly.
I don't know what the general consensus on here was yesterday becuase I"m too lazy to read and I'm at work... but I was proud of our guys last night.
It was closer than I expected it to be, and if we had one more decent player getting minutes, I think we'd have had enough gas to finish them off 12/4/2006 9:03:28 AM |

If there's a good loss, then this definitely is it.
First road game on opening night of a new stadium facing a top 25 conference foe.
Good last play too, Costner had a good look at the basket to tie it up. Guys hustled all night long and it was a good effort by our squad.
If this team is last in the ACC I'll eat my shoe. BTW, anyone hear Dan Bonner on the pregame show say that he thinks the ACC could get 9 NCAA bids. Talk about a whackjob. 12/4/2006 9:28:01 AM |

I had a dream that we won.
PS. Cedric was and is a very raw player. It's easy to imagine hickson being better if he already has some coordination and post moves.

Ced destroyed high school kids just like JJ is doing. It's real easy for the ones destined to be good at the next level to look great compared to chumps. But to make judgments this far out is retarded. Think about every other player recruited that was supposed to be nasty (Scooter ring a bell?). 12/4/2006 9:50:11 AM |

I like the way this team plays. They have a ton of heart and give everything they possibly can. You can't mad if/when they lose because you know they gave everything they had. We still could have easily won that game though so that in some ways is disappointing.
What I don't like however is that we're not playing our walkons. "Lack of depth" only occurs by choice. When we're this low on scholarship players and can't afford to have some catastrophe take out another player, the scrubs need some minutes to avoid an even larger catastrophe down the road. 12/4/2006 10:12:13 AM |

I think this team is going to be a team that's competitive in teh first half and loses it in the 2nd. That's just the way it goes and I fully expect us to blow 10 point leads or fall apart in the 2nd half.
That's the sad reality, but until we can get a solid 7-8 man rotation, we're simply not going to have the gas to keep up every night with 5 solid players.
As far as the walk-ons... there's not really one besides Neimann that can make a helpful contribution. Braxton Albritton just doesn't have what it takes to run with ACC Calibre players 12/4/2006 10:29:16 AM |

You just mentioned one of three. I realize they may not be great, maybe not even as good as Will Roach--I don't know, I haven't seen any of them play. But there is no reason not to try to plug them in whenever possible--that's what they are there for--emergency back up. There's no point of having them on the bench sitting there doing nothing when who knows down the line during the thick of the ACC schedule we might lose 2 players--at least no one would be coming out cold turkey. I'm not saying keep them in long, but give them a couple minutes. It can only help us at this point. 12/4/2006 1:18:45 PM |

my biggest takeaway from yesterday's game was that lowe >>> herb at designing plays during time outs. the three at the end was a well-designed play, about the best look you could hope to have with the other team expecting a 3. not to mention he was able to draw it up so that costner, who was our only consistent shooter all game, had the shot.
also, after a time out midway through the second half, we came out and posted grant and fells on either side of the paint, with costner and mccauley out on the perimeter. nice play design - gave our big guards a chance to exploit their size advantages without having to worry about UVa's big men being in the way.
honestly, we didn't play a great game, yet were still a few long rebounds away from winning our first ACC game, on the road. This UVa team has already beaten Arizona at home, so they're pretty tough. My prediction for state is 7-9 in conference, 7th place, and an NIT berth. That would be admirable considering our current lack of size and depth, and teh level of talent in the ACC this year. 12/4/2006 1:37:13 PM |

i was very impressed with the team play yesterday playing a 6 man rotation and starting a walk on to lose by 5 to 25 rated UVA team in there new arena
gg to the guys for hanging in there
when we get 8 strong, we are going to contend we would have won last night if the fellas had one more body to rotate in / out
the boards they killed us on was offensive rebounds and that was due to all the missed shots from the arc / i dont see us getting killed on the boards like last year the way the team is boxing out and actually trying to rebound or get into position to rebound 12/4/2006 1:39:38 PM |

The experience gleaned by our young starters this year is going to be huuge for our peak years coming up ('08/'09) when we are of a talent level that is able to compete for the ACC title.
Props to Costner for a being our MVP in his first real ACC game. He's gonna have a heck of a career with us! 12/4/2006 2:09:37 PM |

primarily, when you aren't rotating 6 men. All I'm saying is that there is never an excuse for lack of depth, for any sport. That "depth" may not be as talented as preferred, but everyone on the roster and sitting on that bench in a uniform should be able to come in and contribute in some form or fashion. If not, then they are no good for practice either.
As said before, I'm not looking for these guys to get any significant amount of playing time, but now and early season is the time to get these guys feet wet so we aren't deer in headlights if any two in our regular rotation are a down at the same time during the thick of schedule.

I was impressed also about how we played, staying with the #25 team in the country in their own building, but Nieman is not a walk-on anymore so i expect him to play like he deserves to have that scholarship. I just think we ran out of gas and offensive rebounds were a bitch to us yesterday. The future looks bright though GO PACK12/4/2006 4:27:41 PM |

Cedric destroyed high school players because of his athleticism. he could just jump over them and dunk on them. JJ Hickson on the other hand has that athleticism, yet is refined in his jump shot and post moves. So, on that basis, im saying that he will be > than Cedric Simmons. He will also be better utilized at NC State than Cedric was. But, call me a clown or w/e. Not like i give a fuck what anyone on HERE thinks about NC State sports. 12/4/2006 4:33:52 PM |
