When is the 5.0 OS due out for the masses?

What are the upgrades/advantages?

who knows. The Storm 2 is supposed to be released with 5.0 in about a month and a half so maybe it'll be pushed out to everyone before then. The current leaked 5.0 release for the storm has tabbed browsing, flick scrolling, threaded SMS, boots up faster with a nice black bootscreen with blackberry across it, memory is a lot more stable, but the camera doesn't work. Hopefully a good hybrid will be out soon.

Yeah, everything I am reading is for OS 5.0 is for the storm. What about the tour?

Different providers have different release dates for new software versions...the basic platform of each new software version is the same, but some things have to be programmed into one release for say, Verizon, while other stuff needs to be programmed into the software for the Sprint release, etc

You can usually find releases online before they come out, but if they're not for your particular cell provider, they'll often lock up your phone and require a wipe, so make sure you back everything up before you try a beta release

^ As long as you're installing software for your phone (i.e. 9530 is NOT a 9500), the most you should have to do is delete the vendor.xml file before installation. It seems like the biggest issue with lock-ups & bricking (though you can't really brick a BB I believe) is people running through USB hubs or disconnecting the phone during install.

you can definitely brick them. it's called jvm error. usually destop manager will recover, but occasionally jl_cmder is needed.

yeah, if you brick the phone it's more than likely user error and not the OS. I always back mine up, do a full wipe with BBSAK, load the OS with loader.exe and then restore. Haven't bricked it yet and I've updated to almost every leaked OS.

yeh, a JVM error can really shit on your parade. mine had a JVM error in the middle of the night, rendering my phone and alarm clock useless when I have to be up at 530 in the morning. after oversleeping I discovered my new paper weight. ended up getting a new one - nothing would fix it.

I got the 507 reload OS error the other day.

That was fun. Took a couple of tries before desktop manager recognized the PIN and let me reload the OS onto the Tour. Good times.

On another note, I'm taking the Tour back today to swap it out for a new one due to the stupid trackball issue.

Desktop manager sometimes gets pissy, that's why I always use the loader.exe under C:\Programs Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader

Yeah, I guess I should have said kill instead. I don't consider it bricked if it's recoverable and 99+% of the time, a BB is. I always associate bricking with WinMo and stuff. My bad.

^Are you actually trying to email or are you trying to send a MMS? What is it doing?

if you go to photobucket and select mobile phone in the upload part, it'll give you an email address. Just send an email with the photo attached to that address

My trackball on my Tour crapped out after only 36 days of light use - evidently this is a pretty large problem, both from evidence on the web, and the woman I dealt with at VZW in crossroads

VZW was great about just replacing it (already out of returnable warranty, prob still under some other mfg warranty) but still a pain to have to reprogram all of the crap installed.

Might want to wait for the Storm 2 if you were considering this one

yeh, I've heard October, but not much has been released.

from what I've heard:

- press screen is basically no more or at least dramatically reduced
- the 4 blackberry buttons at the bottom have been incorporated into the screen
- lag is supposedly gone
- screen response to spatial orientation is supposedly much improved

hopefully I'm not posting stuff already known, but I haven't kept up with this thread.

i have a tour for work and am still rocking my curve personally. i dont mind the tour when i upgrade from the curve in oct, but id wait for the storm2 and give it a shot if it's improved in those areas you just mentioned

also if it was a tiny tiny bit smaller

^oh yeh, I do believe it is skinnier and has a partial metal case

how is the tour? I'm holding out to hear how the storm 2 works out. if people like it I'll get one, if not, I was thinking about going with the tour. so if it comes to that, tour or stay with the curve?

The click is still there with the storm 2 just not as pronounced. Instead of 1 button in the center like the storm, it has 4 (1 on each corner). Screen is stiff when it's locked or powered off but clicks when it's powered on. And the storm 2 actually weighs more than the original. Still has the same form factor though.

where I got my info:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/21/blackberry-storm-2-the-unofficial-hands-on/
http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/01/blackberry-storm-storm-2-face-off-on-video-result-predictable/
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/25/blackberry-storm-2-and-its-piezoelectric-soul-finally-diss/

so it seems they've said two different things about the click screen...

yeh, I just re-read it and that's what it is. I wonder how less pronounced the click is... the original storm click was horrible. Hopefully it's more pressure than click, as it seems to be in that last article...

ah!

And I like how everyone jumped on the piezo bandwagon. That was just a theory from someone on crackberry and it seems that everyone else jumped all over it. Still hasn't been confirmed or denied though.

i suppose ill just go into a store and play with one when they release. im familiar with the tour and i like it enough to go to it next but would prefer touchscreen if it's not as gay as storm1

re: tour, i have the verizon version, and i like it. it's much faster than the curve, keys are placed a little different (wider keys = typos compared to curve, probabyl get used to that pretty easy), much better resolution on the display though, and brighter/deeper colors.

it is bigger than the curve, which i dont really like, as i had finally gotten used to the curve size in my pocket

the new curve 9700 or whatever it is with the trackpad should also be out in the next couple months. A tour with wifi is in the works but probably won't come out anytime soon though.

so give it permission?

options - security - application permissions - google maps - BB key - edit permissions - set all to allow

Will that fix the fact that google maps always has an approximate gps position within 3000 meters?

I mean it uses gps, right? Why can't it be within 10 or 20 feet?

it uses cell towers

atleast on verizon because they block the GPS and make you pay for their shitty VZnavigator if you want gps on your phone

Not necessarily. The recent ones shouldn't be gps locked. I can use the gps chip perfectly fine on my storm.

yeh, AFAIK curves don't get free gps service.

Gmaps uses the cell network to give an approximate location and not gps. and that technology isn't nearly as good as gps, thus it gives you a large area that you could be in. besides, the carriers probably don't want gmaps to be nearly that good since that would circumvent the need to purchase the gps service.

^ try to find a newer leaked OS. Boot time on the storm has decreased dramatically with leaks and have gone from about 5min to less than 2 on 5.0.

Loaded 5.0.0.230 on the storm last night and the camera is back working again. Facebook and BBM 5.0 don't work but other than that it's nearly flawless. There is a bug with the media player though. It'll play a song and then go to mute when it gets to the second one. And Opera Mini 5 Beta is pretty nice.

i redownloaded it yesterday and it gave me 1.6.0.21

will try again

update: i just went through mobile.blackberry.com and it still wants to give me 1.6.0.21. i get the "could not connect because data service is not available..." message when i load facebook. maybe it's a .163 OS issue? (i'm on a 8310). i'll give some time/research and may just downgrade back to .161

i downloaded facebook from appworld...never had a problem, even with upgrades

I downloaded an app yeseterday called BB Screen Stream (http://oppitronic.de/pb/bbscreenstream.php)

Its pretty cool...basically you just plug your BB in via USB, run the bbscreenstream.exe file (with javaloader.exe in the same directory) and you can basically take screen caps or do tutorial videos, etc
