No he didn't...
but Engin was CRUCIAL to our teams success late last year. He needs to be replaced and there are MAJOR questions as to whether or not anyone can step up and do it (Degand!). People constantly understate how important he was to the team. I could easily make an argument he was more important than Costner was in the ACCT. 10/30/2007 2:02:01 PM |

ACC Hoops Preview: #2-North Carolina State
Who are the main men? Brandon Costner turned into a monster as the season went along last year. He could challend UNC's Tyler Hansbrough for Play of the Year honors. State also found out that guys like Courtney Fells, Gavin Grant and Ben McCauley could play.
What are the team's strengths? They play hard for Sidney Lowe ... which is a credit to his value to the program. So does the fact that he is one of the best halftime adjustment coaches in the ACC. Also, since this team was so thin last year, nearly everyone returning has played major minutes during their NCSU career. That kind of work meanst these guys won't get scared of anything.
When will we see them struggle? Engin Astur is gone ... and when he was out last season, NC State fell apart. Now, they will have Fanold Degand and Marques Johnson fighting for the gig. The ACC is full of talented PGs ... so this position could cost them. Also, they get some more depth ... but not complete depth. If guys get in foul trouble, watch out.
Why should anyone care? With NC State relevant again, the Triangle is buzzing again. The ACC should see the top three spots in the standings being gobbled up by the schools residing in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.
How stable is the program? Sidney Lowe has brought excitement to the campus that hasn't been there is a while. And he should last pretty long, as long as he's winning. The fact that he's spent so much time on the NBA sidelines will help his recruiting tremendously.
Where will they finish in the ACC? The Wolfpack can win the ACC. They showed, last year, that they could play with and beat the Tar Heels and are expecting to do so this year. I see them as a run below the Heels, but are still right there in the discussion.
Name you didn't know, but will: In all of the prep hoopla, the name J.J. Hickson doesn't ring a bell to most people. Well, he's the next big thing in Raleigh. He tore it up in the McDonald's All American Game and will be a devestating compliment to Costner. " |

We had talent so of course we'd win a few games without him. However, we were an INFINITELY better team with him. I suppose you don't remember the Cincy game where we played like 2nd grade school girls falling all over each other (32 turnovers!)?
And against VT the first time Atsur played 35 minutes and only had 1 turnover. The 2nd time he played 35 minutes, shot 80%, scored 20 points, had 8 assists and 4 turnovers. He also played in the VT game in the ACC Tourney for nearly 30 minutes. Didn't have a great game but minimized turnovers and ran the offense.
Against UNC in our regular season win he played 38 minutes, had 12 points, 10 assists and 4 turnovers (Grant had EIGHT turnovers playing off the ball... good christ). The second game against UNC we got killed in the second half but Atsur played 40 minutes on a hurt leg, scored 16 points, had 4 assists and only had ONE turnover. In the ACC CG, Atsur played 32 minutes when he barely could walk, had 3 points (the big 3 that tied the game late was his only basket of the game), 5 assists and 3 turnovers.

take every pg or combo guard off of any team and you will notice this. you have to have a point or at least some kind of natural point forward. the fact that grant was our next closest thing to a pg showed you why he was important. BY DEFAULT.
don't act like atsur was chris paul penetrating and dishing at will, creating everything and scoring. usually he brought the ball up the court, passed it and became a set shooter. I can honestly count his penetrate and dish plays on my hand. he was a great shooter, great at the pick and roll and an ok scorer but thats about it.
he did nothing that made this team "go" he was nothing like chris paul or raymond felton. those are the type of guys that make everybody else exponentially better. Atsur was a slow(maybe because the injury he wasn't healthy all season), smart player that took care of the ball.
also any 1 player at any position that is a good player will make a team with a depth problem look a lot better when he is on the team. if you took away ben or costner instead of atsur the team would have looked even worse.
every team has to have a pg and 2 big men or else they are screwed.
losing a smart hurt guy and replacing him with 3 young, ahtletic, fast guys will be ok. we can coach the mental part.11/1/2007 11:21:26 AM |

Obviously Atsur was an important part of the success of last years team, but people should keep in mind that there are 2 point guards with National Championship rings on our coaching staff so if anyone can school a point guard its this coaching staff (and they've had a full year with Degand already). 11/1/2007 11:32:54 AM |

i recognize maybe 2 names below him on that list, so i'd say its more a statement about a weak year for shooting guards than it is about how great he is. and i guess our definitions of "one of the best" differ, because to me that means at least top 5, probably top 3. 9th isn't really saying a whole lot. but whatever you want to think, its all speculation at this point11/1/2007 5:39:04 PM |

and I still think it will be something like that, that is at least 16:9/HD due to the fact that canesvision uses 16:9 for almost everything now. just look at that new logo thing they made this year that has the state logo in front of a zooming background or whatever you want to call it.. its 16:9

Quote : | "From Tobacco Road tales to riots in Maryland to the newest territory up north in Chestnut Hill, Mass., the ACC is widely regarded as the top tier in terms of basketball conferences. Last season saw some surprises and even more disappointments. And for the second straight season, it also saw the league unrepresented in the Final Four. Even more disappointing, the Atlantic Coast Conference only had one team advance into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. These are rare down-times for the ACC, uncharted territories in many ways. The world may continue to hate Duke, but the Blue Devils haven’t seen a Final Four since 2004 and were first-round victims to upstart Virginia Commonwealth last season. Once again this season, futility – relatively speaking – seems to be the theme of ACC basketball. Once again, only North Carolina appears to have what it takes to contend for a national championship. And the Tar Heels may not even have much competition in league play this time around.
PROJECTED TEAM FINISH
1. North Carolina 2. N.C. State 3. Duke 4. Virginia 5. Boston College 6. Georgia Tech 7. Clemson 8. Maryland 9. Florida State 10. Miami 11. Virginia Tech 12. Wake Forest

WTF mate? They weren't even that good last year. I know a lot of teams that finished well last year (VT, UVA) have taken steps back due to players leaving, but others, such as ourselves, have stepped into those voids. With the ACC's track record of producing early NBA draft picks that are young, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the ACC is just as strong as it has been. The ACC schools continue to get cream of the crop players. Talk about atrocity, the ACC continues to dominate the Big Ten in the Challenge, yet they often times have their teams' overall seeding be better than the ACC's.11/2/2007 3:20:39 PM |

^ I get so sick of hearing that "Carolina is going to have a cake-walk through the regular season" shit. We beat those ass-holes with half a fucking team last year. Atsur was good but his departure can at the very least be compensated for. I don't buy into this whole addition by subtraction shit when it comes to Carolina. They lost 3 quality players. They gained a year of experience, but so has everyone else. What is all of a sudden going to make them head and shoulders above the rest of the league, when they weren't last year?
I agree that going into the season they are the best team, but since when is winning the acc a piece of cake? Even if I wasn't a State fan, I would hope that they fall flat on their faces for everyone sucking their dicks this hard.

See I don't care if the media picks Carolina 1st. I think they will be a quality team. Probably the best in the league overall. But the ACC is never a cakewalk, and that's the problem I have with the media saying they'll just show up and win the shit outright. They could easily stumble along the way @ Clemson, @ State, @ Duke, and at least one at home (perhaps State, Maryland, Duke). They also have some tough games OOC. They start out the season against Davidson in Charlotte. Most teams start with a cupcake (i.e. William & Mary for State) to get things all in order, yet the Tar Heels start with one of the most dangerous mid-majors in all of college basketball this year. They'll likely face Louisville in Las Vegas (distractions anyone), go to Columbus to take on Ohio State, play @ Kentucky immediately after, and then play at Rutgers (a tough place to play) to finish up nearly 3 weeks on the road. 11/2/2007 3:35:48 PM |
