we never saw daniel actually write that sentence in his journal...
do you think he wrote it during that episode?
or wrote it at another time and just found it? 2/28/2008 10:06:04 PM |

I'm surprised this thread didn't blow up when the auctioneer mentioned the name of the family who held possession of the Black Rock's ledger: Hanso.
So Daniel's brain had prolonged exposure to the radiation... even though he was wearing that vest, they pointed out that his head was still exposed. That would indicate that he will be time traveling too. Perhaps his time traveling explains why he started crying when he saw on the news that the wreckage of 815 was found.
Also, I'm a little bit rusty on my Desmond chronology, as I recall he was with that monastery and met Penny as he was leaving. After being in a relationship with Penny, he wanted to marry her but her dad wouldn't let him because he wasn't a member of the upperclass. So he broke up with Penny because he couldn't marry her then he joined the Army... I'm assuming after he left the Army he decided to compete in the race? And also, why would Penny's dad help him find his daughter when he obviously didn't want them to be together?
Finally, so is Desmond completely at a loss of memory since 1996 now or since he found Penny (his constant) was his memory restored?

i noticed the hanso thing also...
whitmore is in on everything...it is his research island or something...
also....desmond was discharged from the military and penny's dad picked him up and tried to bribe him never to talk to penny again. that is when he decided to enter the boat race (sponsored by penny's dad).. he met jack at the stadium while they were running and he also talked to penny that night.... 2/28/2008 10:11:45 PM |

So all the short/grainy shots of Hanso show him to be Asian right? If not, is it possible that Richard is actually Hanso? We now know that the ledger of the Black Rock was in his family's possession for hundreds of years. Perhaps Richard was a crewman on the Black Rock that somehow through the powers of the island has reached immortality (hence not aging) and was able to hold onto the ledger.
(And Desmond's boat was called Elizabeth, after Libby. What did the Others do with that boat by the way? I know they stole it, did they store it somewhere?)

I want to think he wrote it when Desmond came to see him in 1996, but it JUST NOW showed up. But that seems to be against the time travel they put forth, so I don't know.

how so? he basically said people don't physically time travel. stuff still changes because you mentally time travel--desmond knowing the machine settings and penny's phone number.
When the sentence in the diary was written doesn't really matter...i don't understand why everyone's so focused on WHEN it was written...All that matters is that it WAS written at some point in time post future Desmond telling past Desmond to go to Oxford. Basically its a sign that things have changed because Desmond went back.

Maybe it only showed up after desmond made contact. If desmond had died then he couldn't have been a contact, because he would've died in 1996? (and 2004 simultaneously?)2/28/2008 11:43:09 PM |

Things dont appear out of nowhere. He said it was all conciously. He either wrote it in the 1996 or sometime between then and 2004. It just didn't appear in his book in 2004 out of nowhere.
I'm guessing he did it in 1996. He told Desmond in 1996 you need to find a constant between the 2 time periods. When they were in Faradays office in 1996, Faraday knew 100% that Desmond would be in the future. One of, if not the only thing he is totally sure of would be there, so he most likely wrote it in 1996. 2/28/2008 11:48:11 PM |

I don't think it actually matters when he wrote it. This could be something we're reading into a little too much
If he actually is traveling between time mentally, then he only would've written that after he began traveling, in which case it doesn't really matter when he wrote it only that he knows in both times that desmond still exists.
I think the point was just to suggest that he is traveling, or was at sometime (maybe before he got to the island/is not on the island) traveling between time.

^ or he could've written it when he told desmond to contact him in the past thinking that fucking with the past could somehow screw with his already unstable mind.

He knows for sure that he will meet Desmond in the future. Thus, Desmond is a reliable constant. Thats why he wrote it.

Just to clear up this concept of "mind travel" I'm assuming you mean that it actually happens (and isn't just imaginary or something) and that the 'mind' part comes from the fact that he doesn't physically go into the past but instead possesses his past self.
In other words, Desmond is really in the past changing stuff, but he's using his body as it existed in that past. The only thing that actually travels through time is his mind.
Quote : | "He knows for sure that he will meet Desmond in the future. Thus, Desmond is a reliable constant." |
Exactly.
Desmond told him he talked to him on an island in the future, so Farraday thinks Desmond may be the only reliable constant if he is stranded on an island.2/29/2008 12:50:16 AM |

the writers were really smart to have only the "mind" time travel...
b/c if they would have done the body, they would have ran into that age-old problem of having 2 of yourselves running around...ala back to the future 2/29/2008 5:47:16 AM |

Im pretty sure faraday was having mild symptoms like desmond was, and couldnt remember his experiments.
Some things pointed to it, like the guys on the boat wondering why faraday could help desmond, they said "faraday cant even help himself".
By sending desmond to meet him at oxford, he created a constant after the fact, which is an interesting way to look at it.
I think when he saw the note in his notebook, it instantly all came back to him, just like it did for desmond. 2/29/2008 6:42:00 AM |

To me, it really seemed like Faraday was remembering meeting Desmond as he was telling Des how to contact his past self.
He didn't seem too concerned about creating the paradox, he seemed more concerned about it not happening.
I think the time travel is the "history is the sum result of all time travel that will happen" variety, rather than the "history is constantly rewritten by every time travel event" kind. 2/29/2008 7:11:24 AM |

on a different topic, they have now confirmed that ~100 days have passed both on the island and off it. We know the survivors have been there 100 days, and on the freighter (and the call to Penny from the freighter) they confirmed that it was December 24, 2004 in the rest of the world.
So we know that time in general does pass at the same speed, so it's not like 100 days have passed on the island and only 5 days have passed in the rest of the world. So given that, there's going to have to be a lot of explaining about how "time on the island is perceived differently", as Faraday told Jack or how a 20 minute helicopter ride took half a day, as Sayid noticed. (or was it "negative" half a day? did he say "we left at dusk, and now it's midday", or "we left at dawn, and now it's midday"?). Maybe there's some kind of event horizon around the island that when crossing through or over has the effect 2/29/2008 8:22:50 AM |

yeah i was wondering when someone was going to bring up the whole "time doesn't pass the way you think it does" thing.
farraday showed there was a few minute difference with the rocket or whatever was launched, but a couple of minutes would not explain the helicopter ride that left at dusk and arrived midday.
