went out of carolina beach on the Winner Fleet 3am-6pm tripthe ocean was like glass....great weather...and we were all over the fish. Nothing real big though, some guys on the boat caught a few larger amberjacks, only 2 grouper and no keeper red snappers brought up. The vermillion/grunts/triggerfish should be feeling a hurt after we rolled through though. My dad and I brought home over 60 fish as well as a 15lb AJ that was full of worms of course
10/7/2008 9:19:32 PM
lord i hope i never pay someone to put me on a bottom fish and/or AJ bite
10/7/2008 9:21:42 PM
wish i had the resources to fish other stuffi do like the fishing on the head boats, its the ride thats the killer
10/7/2008 9:23:15 PM
just left the boat ramp. had our limit of specks by 10 am. headed home.
10/9/2008 2:06:59 PM
cleaned the boat, cleaned the fish, and cleaned myself.i'm fucking tired, but i'm contemplating doing it again tomorrow. what an addiction
10/9/2008 6:17:42 PM
pops went with his gf and they caught 19 today. one shy of their limit. said the bite was significantly slower today and you really had to work for them.best part of it all, in two days we haven't pulled a single undersize trout out of that place. everything is a keeper and they average 17 to 18 inches. haven't seen much roe either, so i'm guessing they've already laid their eggs, which is great when you're keeping some to eat.have caught several undersize puppy drum and a couple undersize flounder there though.
10/10/2008 7:33:43 PM
so if i buy a fishing license whens the soonest we can go freshwater fishing?
10/10/2008 7:36:40 PM
idk, maybe go to lake johnson one saturday night or something
10/11/2008 12:04:56 AM
gonna keep watching the reports and go catch some spots as soon as they start showing up. not much sport, but damn they are good to eat. we'll probably go fill up a cooler or two with them and spend the rest of the day trout and/or flounder fishing.so, anyone else captaining a spot yacht this year?
10/13/2008 2:35:49 PM
supposedly the spots are running pretty good around the turning basin in MHC. We were going to go offshore last weekend, but got blown out. Going to try it again this weekend. I'm thinking about hitting 315 for some spanish and kings...anyone catching any?
10/13/2008 2:38:12 PM
10/13/2008 3:21:13 PM
^^i don't king fish anymore except off the pier every now and then, but from what i'm hearing the kings are thick just about everywhere. mostly snakes, but might find a larger one thrown in...[Edited on October 13, 2008 at 4:00 PM. Reason : ^^and thanks for the heads up on the spots.]
10/13/2008 4:00:40 PM
^From what I've read on the fishing reports, I think the water is going to have to cool down a tick more for them to start running really well.
10/13/2008 4:50:50 PM
yeah, that's what i was figuring. weather like this ain't gonna help it cool down any sooner though.
10/13/2008 4:51:43 PM
stop blowing wind...Last week I had to cancel on Wed. night our offshore trip for the weekend and this week it looks like the same or worse.Damn. I'm jonesing bigtime to get back out there and try it again.
10/14/2008 5:13:21 PM
limited out today on kings (12) out of bogue inlet
10/14/2008 5:51:26 PM
^^how much boat?
10/14/2008 6:05:02 PM
this thursday looks like the fishing is going to be perfect...then of course the shitty weather moves in when the weekend gets here
10/15/2008 8:19:24 AM
Exactly....I've been wanting to go for the past two weekends and the same thing... ^^I have a 25' hydrasport.^^^How far out did you guys go out of Bogue? This week was sooooo pretty.
10/15/2008 11:44:24 AM
y'all need to take up trout fishing. we usually catch more fish with a NE wind and rain.
10/15/2008 12:52:28 PM
do you fish up the neuse around New Bern or out toward the sound around Oriental?
10/15/2008 3:26:30 PM
i'm not kidding with you. i have fished the neuse for trout all the way from new bern to the mouth and caught them everywhere in between. it mostly depends on the weather and time of year.i also fish the pamlico, bay, and pungo riversfish some other places sometimes, but mostly those 4 riversi watch reports and weather, guess at salinities, and go where i think will be best at that time. i have to pick my fishing spots based on what day i can get free to go.
10/15/2008 4:08:15 PM
final count for tuesday/wednesay out of bogue = 26 kings, 12 spanishwithin 3 miles of the beach, station rock, keypost, etc
10/16/2008 10:03:50 AM
^ saw your post on ncwaterman. Thats awesome man. I was planning on heading out saturday to try for some kings out of Beaufort, but it looks like the weather isnt going to cooperate with me again.^^Oh I believe you...I just have a wife and father-in-law who are kind of fareweather fisherman. They dont like to get out in the rain.
10/16/2008 10:09:14 AM
i've never seen a fish with a raincoat
10/16/2008 10:17:46 AM
yeah, there's a nor'easter coming again i think this weekend, we tried beaufort on monday at the dead tree hole, ar315, shipping channel, and rock jetty and didnt get much, no kings...i suggest going out of bogue, turning left out of the inlet up towards the pier and working out that way, there's lots of bait and the spanish are there on top, kings are down too
10/16/2008 2:56:14 PM
shitty yucky weekend again.Damnit.
10/21/2008 11:35:36 AM
going down friday night and fishing saturday. pops wants to get some spots. probably try to catch a cooler full and then head to the haystacks.
10/21/2008 11:36:57 AM
IF I COME CAN I SHOOT THE FISH WITH SLUGS?
10/21/2008 11:38:53 AM
HOW ELSE WOULD YOU FISH FOR THEM?CERTAINLY NOT WITH A ROD AND REEL SON.
10/21/2008 11:40:20 AM
well fuck it. guess we're not gonna go. 25 to 30 is just too much. SW to SE wind would probably shut the bite down anyway.sigh.....
10/21/2008 10:27:35 PM
hopefully headed down to carolina beach to surf fish on sunday, weather permitting. Any recommendations from you seasoned salt water fisherman. PM me
10/23/2008 2:05:30 PM
I WILL COME ALONG ON ANY FISHING TRIP THAT INVOLVES THE USE OF 12 GAUGE SHOTGUNS FOR FISHING.
10/23/2008 2:09:36 PM
1/4 sticks of dynamite pwn your shotgun son.
10/23/2008 2:36:25 PM
DYNAMITE REQUIRES NO SKILL SON.
10/23/2008 2:37:04 PM
^^^^great time of year. fish cut bait on the bottom with a fishfinder rig for drum. a flounder rig with finger mullet or cut bait for flounder. shrimp on a trusty 2-hook bottom rig should pick up sea mullet, pompano, maybe a spot too if you switch up to bloodworm or that fish bites artificial bloodworm. if you're into artificials it's hard to go wrong with a grub or gulp bait on a heavy lead head that you can throw a little ways. if you get a long flimsy rod mirrolures are fun to fish from the surf. the best all-around artificial for the surf (in my experience anyways) is a kastmaster or a hopkins. gold or silver. depending on how you work it i've caught gray trout, specks, sea mullet, pompano, spanish, blues, and flounder on those things from the surf.the single most important thing for surf fishing is to look for a "hole". it's where waves are breaking on top of a shallow sandbar off the beach a little ways and there's a deep hole between the beach and the bar. fish in that hole. baitfish will get up in there and drum and stuff will feed on them. if you catch a school of blues tearing up baitfish on top, throw a kastmaster or a soft plastic on a lead head out and fish it on the bottom. the blues let a lot of dead baitfish fall down under them when they're feeding and you might get a trout or something out of there.[Edited on October 23, 2008 at 3:06 PM. Reason : good luck. i wish i was going. let us know how you do.]
10/23/2008 3:04:33 PM
pops is going tomorrow
10/25/2008 8:46:25 PM
tell him not to catch em all...leave some for the rest of us
10/25/2008 10:24:45 PM
he's not taking a very large cooler
10/25/2008 10:42:48 PM
lol they only caught about 20 spots. went somewhere around surf city on the boat.
10/26/2008 10:06:22 PM

10/26/2008 11:02:12 PM

10/26/2008 11:12:22 PM

10/26/2008 11:13:14 PM

10/26/2008 11:13:46 PM
catfishing at bond lake is always good.
10/26/2008 11:16:13 PM
i've heard of some keeper pompano from various piers lately. i've never really seen the pompano thick enough to target though. usually just pick a few up when i'm bottom fishing on the pier or whatever. they are good eatin though.we were surf fishing once and the fish were so thick (all kinds of species too) that one guy fishing with us bet that he could catch a fish on a piece of apple. he put a little piece of red delicious on each hook of a 2-hook bottom rig, threw it out in the hole, and in a few minutes was reeling in a nice pompano. fun times....
10/27/2008 12:52:56 PM
Caught last week about 60 miles south of Beaufort Inlet
10/27/2008 1:22:36 PM
african pompano != butterfish
10/27/2008 1:30:47 PM
^^^^i just hope they've gotten bigger since the last time i went
