went out of carolina beach on the Winner Fleet 3am-6pm trip
the ocean was like glass....great weather...and we were all over the fish. Nothing real big though, some guys on the boat caught a few larger amberjacks, only 2 grouper and no keeper red snappers brought up. The vermillion/grunts/triggerfish should be feeling a hurt after we rolled through though. My dad and I brought home over 60 fish as well as a 15lb AJ that was full of worms of course 10/7/2008 9:19:32 PM |

pops went with his gf and they caught 19 today. one shy of their limit. said the bite was significantly slower today and you really had to work for them.
best part of it all, in two days we haven't pulled a single undersize trout out of that place. everything is a keeper and they average 17 to 18 inches. haven't seen much roe either, so i'm guessing they've already laid their eggs, which is great when you're keeping some to eat.
have caught several undersize puppy drum and a couple undersize flounder there though. 10/10/2008 7:33:43 PM |

gonna keep watching the reports and go catch some spots as soon as they start showing up. not much sport, but damn they are good to eat. we'll probably go fill up a cooler or two with them and spend the rest of the day trout and/or flounder fishing.
so, anyone else captaining a spot yacht this year? 10/13/2008 2:35:49 PM |
KartRaceKid All American 2937 Posts user info edit post |
supposedly the spots are running pretty good around the turning basin in MHC.
We were going to go offshore last weekend, but got blown out. Going to try it again this weekend. I'm thinking about hitting 315 for some spanish and kings...anyone catching any? 10/13/2008 2:38:12 PM |

buy it online and print it off and you can fish right away with the temporary permit while the legit one is mailed, else a local sporting goods/wal-mart can just give you one after you buy it10/13/2008 3:21:13 PM |

^^i don't king fish anymore except off the pier every now and then, but from what i'm hearing the kings are thick just about everywhere. mostly snakes, but might find a larger one thrown in...

^From what I've read on the fishing reports, I think the water is going to have to cool down a tick more for them to start running really well. 10/13/2008 4:50:50 PM |

do you fish up the neuse around New Bern or out toward the sound around Oriental? 10/15/2008 3:26:30 PM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
i'm not kidding with you. i have fished the neuse for trout all the way from new bern to the mouth and caught them everywhere in between. it mostly depends on the weather and time of year.
i also fish the pamlico, bay, and pungo rivers
fish some other places sometimes, but mostly those 4 rivers
i watch reports and weather, guess at salinities, and go where i think will be best at that time. i have to pick my fishing spots based on what day i can get free to go. 10/15/2008 4:08:15 PM |

yeah, there's a nor'easter coming again i think this weekend, we tried beaufort on monday at the dead tree hole, ar315, shipping channel, and rock jetty and didnt get much, no kings...i suggest going out of bogue, turning left out of the inlet up towards the pier and working out that way, there's lots of bait and the spanish are there on top, kings are down too 10/16/2008 2:56:14 PM |

^^^^great time of year. fish cut bait on the bottom with a fishfinder rig for drum. a flounder rig with finger mullet or cut bait for flounder. shrimp on a trusty 2-hook bottom rig should pick up sea mullet, pompano, maybe a spot too if you switch up to bloodworm or that fish bites artificial bloodworm. if you're into artificials it's hard to go wrong with a grub or gulp bait on a heavy lead head that you can throw a little ways. if you get a long flimsy rod mirrolures are fun to fish from the surf. the best all-around artificial for the surf (in my experience anyways) is a kastmaster or a hopkins. gold or silver. depending on how you work it i've caught gray trout, specks, sea mullet, pompano, spanish, blues, and flounder on those things from the surf.
the single most important thing for surf fishing is to look for a "hole". it's where waves are breaking on top of a shallow sandbar off the beach a little ways and there's a deep hole between the beach and the bar. fish in that hole. baitfish will get up in there and drum and stuff will feed on them. if you catch a school of blues tearing up baitfish on top, throw a kastmaster or a soft plastic on a lead head out and fish it on the bottom. the blues let a lot of dead baitfish fall down under them when they're feeding and you might get a trout or something out of there.

i've heard of some keeper pompano from various piers lately. i've never really seen the pompano thick enough to target though. usually just pick a few up when i'm bottom fishing on the pier or whatever. they are good eatin though.
we were surf fishing once and the fish were so thick (all kinds of species too) that one guy fishing with us bet that he could catch a fish on a piece of apple. he put a little piece of red delicious on each hook of a 2-hook bottom rig, threw it out in the hole, and in a few minutes was reeling in a nice pompano. fun times.... 10/27/2008 12:52:56 PM |
