4 first downs and the games over anyway. if you give them 40 yards 5 minutes runs off the clock so giving them the ball on the 40 and giving up the td is the same as giving them the ball on the 1 and letting them drive to the 41.

The most important thing you're not taking into account is the fact that going for it puts the game in your hands and not the other team's. It gives you a chance to pick up the 1st down.
