which brings me to my next question.... do I need to let them know now? 5/27/2010 2:54:28 PM |

Yeah, but I quit LifeStyle because I'm moving. My membership expires in a month. Then I'll just have the work gym, which has some weights. But a boxing gym would be motivating.
Plus, the boxing gyms around here aren't really that $$$, at least compared to similar workout facilities.

^^^^ boxing is no substitute at all for weight training.
There isn't really any way I know of to get all the benefits of weight training without, you know, lifting weights (or at LEAST using strength training machines).
If you get bored by Pumping Iron-style weight lifting, what about Crossfit? 5/27/2010 2:57:58 PM |

If you really think about it, most sports don't "build" muscle. Building muscle involves loading the muscle until failure causing hypertrophy. What sports do this? 5/27/2010 2:58:21 PM |

Quote : | "The difference is that the second exercise is a lot more effective. The problem is that the personal trainer wants the client to keep coming, so they offer them these weird novelty compound exercises to keep them entertained." |
Not really. Trainers usually do some crazy things with clients for a reason. In the initial assessment, we do some tests in order to gain a better understanding of the client's biomechanical and neurological functions. From that we can develop a program specific to their needs while still challenging their body. For example - the overhead squat assessment - if your heel rises then you may have an overactive soleus and an underactive anterior tibialis, so that means you'll probably want to do some static soleus stretches and single-leg balance reaches to strengthen the muscle. To make it more challenging, do them on a BOSU.
Quote : | "Yep. That's why BMI is really a bad measurement of how well you look." |
Again, not really. While BMI may not be a good indicator for people in this thread (i.e. those who are fit/workout), for the MAJORITY of America, BMI is a good estimator of body fat percent and obesity-related disease.5/27/2010 5:52:59 PM |

BMI is fine for the vast majority of humans.
If you happen to be in the tiny minority (carrying more muscle per pound BW than the average human), then body fat measurement is what you should get done. And for that, from what I know, here are 4 methods ranked in order of effectiveness/accuracy:

The only concern I have with BMI is that at work there was talk for a while that they'd use BMI as a basis for what health care programs people were eligible to enroll in. Luckily the cutoff was going to be "obese" rather than "overweight".

I'm gonna hurry and put mine in before this initial deadline. Hope I can keep up with the weekly photo thing.
I need to weigh myself, but I'm pretty sure I've gone below 170 lbs because I was trying to lose some weight around my waist the two months before the wedding.
I've worn a 32" size waist since high school, but last year I ended up buying a few 33" pants after things started fitting a little tight around the waist. After actually getting serious with my diet my 32's are sometimes loose, and I bought some 31 jeans last week.
I'm attempting to up my running mileage this year so I can get into half marathoning/marathoning.
My goal for the summer is get my body fat % down enough to actually see my abs for the first time, improve my running, and put on some lean mass through weight training.
My diet hasn't been any sort of strict category, but just a learning process of which foods I want to increase and which foods I want to decrease.
I've been eating more of: spinach, broccoli, tuna, chicken, turkey, steak, olive oil, yogurt, milk, olives, almonds, cheese, whole grain bread, soy beans, avocados, bananas.
I've been eating less of, or pretty much eliminated: soda, sugar, white bread, fast food, chips.
These are from yesterday at the end of my honeymoon; so after a week of no home cooking and alcohol at every meal it's time to get back on track with diet and working out.
I really want to improve my back, so here's a first photo
and legs

I will try to get a pic like that. And I know what you mean, I've always noticed my calves seem longer than everyone else's. I guess they are the opposite shape of a sprinters calves, but still a bit more larger than a traditional distance runner's. 5/27/2010 9:22:13 PM |

BMI can be a semi-decent indicator of cardiovascular fitness regardless of your BF%. Your heart doesn't really know the difference between fat and muscle; it just sees extra arteries and veins that it has to pump blood through. Also, you can look extremely lean yet have horrible arterial health. 5/27/2010 10:50:37 PM |

I always eat a garbage diet. If i don't eat small meals every 3 hours my stomach will hurt for the majority of the day. I'm never hungry and if it were not for constant clock watching I could probably not eat for days.

I started my fitness bootcamp this AM. Definitely a hard quick workout (hour long). We did arms this morning and HOLY SHIT my arms aren't in shape (I've been focusing on legs more for my running and biking)
My sister is trying to help me with my goal and has determined that I need to do at least 2 hours a day of some kind of exercise.
Three days a week (hour in the am) I have my fitness bootcamp. I guess then it'd be doing an hour run or bike in the evening, and then on the days I'm not doing bootcamp... Bikram (if I can keep affording it) or a longer bike or run.
I'm just not sure my body is up for 2 hours a day..... thoughts? 5/28/2010 9:06:23 AM |
PackMan92 All American 8284 Posts user info edit post |
I would ease into it if you haven't been doing anything
start with just an hour a day...maybe do some LIGHT walking in the evening and just build up
Also, explain this fitness bootcamp to me
was it an hour of UPPER body...or just arms...if it was just arms, I have issues...

Nobody should work out 7 days a week
Everyone needs 1-2 full days off each week
I'd let someone get away with 1 full day off if the other day was active recovery...light walk, foam rolling/massage, stretching 5/28/2010 9:21:16 AM |

sorry, just saw this. it wasn't just arms, it was upper body. we warmed up with some cardio for like 10 minutes. then did:
planks
3 burpees, 6 pushup, 9 push lifts (i think that's what they're called) with 8 pnd weights. repeating that as many times as we could in 3 minutes with 1 minute rest (did that 5 times)
then a light ab workout then stretched.
