Yeah, I saw that Tom Gabel has come out as transgender.

Can't say I've come to a better understanding of transgenderism. Gender is a social construct, is it not? Gender identity is in the brain. It has nothing to do with wearing dresses, playing football, or any culturally erected "norms" or "gender roles". But, what does it mean to feel like you're one gender or another when you have no point of reference? What if you lived on an island, never having any contact with any person, and as a result you did not know how your respective gender was "supposed" to act, how would you feel then?

What confuses me is that anyone "feels" like they are one gender or another. I can feel anger, sadness, compassion, but I don't know what it means to "feel" gender. I'm a male, but I've never been overly concerned with doing what is "masculine" for the sake of society's approval.

I would like to understand, although I can't help but wonder if the hormone therapy and sexual reassignment would be at all necessary or even desired if we lived in a society that didn't attempt to pigeonhole individuals.

Well many a transwoman regards the penis as a foreign object and wished as a child that it would go away; the social construction is more about gender expression than gender identity, as almost everyone, even trans people, knows what gender ze is from an early age but needs to learn how people of hir gender act and present themselves.
