really? it's one thing to miss spring practice but commit to playing in the fall. it's quite another to be all but obliged to not play in the fall. if wilson wanted to keep playing football he shouldn't have signed a baseball contract with two years of eligibility left.4/30/2011 3:03:19 PM |

i can imagine tarhole fans making a big deal about this, trying to make the program look bad, but not actual State fans. i don't get it.
I actually think RW suffered a little last year (as good as he was) by not being here in the spring. There's no way you get better NOT playing/practicing. There's no way a QB and his WRs/TEs/RBs get their timing any better NOT playing.
Here's something no one thought of yet, at least from the little ive read, but what if RW starts to tear it up, gets called up to double or triple A, he'd be playing bball into september; should we forfeit games till he gets here? This is the potential reality that TOB knew could happen. You can't start a football season, building off a pretty good past season, wondering whose gonna be the starter. 4/30/2011 3:12:58 PM |

in the month of August he's got 1 day off, playoffs start 2nd week of Sept. and his team is currently in first place in their division. His avg is also up to .233.
If you're TOB what would you do? Pray that RW sucks at baseball so he comes back by August?

Waiting to see if and when RW would return wasn't fair to TOB, Glennon, or the rest of the team. TOB stated that MG would be our starting qb, so he and the team could practice how they would play. If RW waited to the last minute, and then he didn't return, fans would be pissed that he "drug us along". And if he did return, he'd be a distraction on the sidelines... to the team and to the fans. So RW, being the stand-up guy that we all know he is, did the honorable thing and put the distraction to rest.
He gave us 3 great years on the field and was one of the best representatives that wolfpack athletics has ever had. And I have a feeling he'll continue to represent NCSU well.
I can't believe people are pissed @ TOB, and even more surprised to see some animosity towards RW. This was the best move for everyone involved. That's how I see it. 4/30/2011 5:50:24 PM |

ugh... Russell speaks
Quote : | "A day after N.C. State announced it has released him from his scholarship, former Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson said he didn’t want to leave the school. “I really want the fans, N.C. State alumni and most of all my teammates to know if I had been given an equal opportunity to compete for the starting job, I would not have asked for my release,” Wilson said Saturday in a telephone interview. “I am a competitor.” Wilson, a three-year starter, is playing minor league baseball for the Asheville Tourists in the Colorado Rockies organization this summer. He said he wanted to come back to N.C. State this fall and attempt to lead the Wolfpack to an ACC championship. He said he didn’t want to have the starting job handed to him on a silver platter, but wanted an equal chance to compete for it. Wilson said it didn’t appear that he would be given that chance. Coach Tom O’Brien responded Saturday with a statement read over the phone to a reporter. “As I conveyed yesterday, I have had several conversations with Russell,” O’Brien said. “He knew the importance of his time commitment to our football team heading into this offseason, and how things might change if he was not able to make that commitment. “As I also communicated, I respect his competitiveness and his contributions to our program and only wish him the best.” Wilson said he respects what O’Brien wanted to do with the football team in terms of going forward, but just wanted a chance to compete for the job. Mike Glennon, a talented but untested junior who led the team through spring practice, will be the starter. Wilson’s goal is to play major league baseball and NFL football, and he said he needs an opportunity to play in 2011 to impress NFL scouts. “I respect Coach O’Brien and I’ve learned a lot from him and his staff,” Wilson said, “and I’m a better football player for that. I just wanted to have an opportunity to fully compete for the job.” He said he is concentrating now on baseball, but imagines he will be getting lots of calls from college teams interested in his services this fall for his final year of eligibility. Wilson is a graduate student who obtained his bachelor’s degree in communications in three years and therefore can transfer to a Football Bowl Subdivision school and play immediately. The terms of his release prevent him from transferring to a school that’s in the ACC or is on N.C. State’s schedule. After leading the Wolfpack to a 9-4 record and a win over West Virginia in the Champs Sports Bowl last season, Wilson ranks second in ACC history in touchdown responsibility with 93 scores. He is No. 8 in ACC history in total offense with 9,628 yards. In the ten-minute phone call Saturday, he was candid about his emotions after the announcement. He said he is proud to be an N.C. State graduate and enjoyed going to graduate school there. He said he is “really torn up” about leaving, and is grateful to the N.C. State fans and his teammates. “N.C. State means the world to me,” Wilson said. “It’s heartbreaking to me that I had to go.”

If he wanted a chance to compete for the starting job he should have played spring ball. Competing for the starting job is not telling the coach you might come back for the fall. Even if he did guarantee TOB he would be back for the fall that still puts us in the positiOn of maybe having a good year, then two years of using untested upperclassen. That's like one step forward and two steps back at best. 4/30/2011 8:21:24 PM |

I'll always <3 RW, but how could he compete for the starting position if he wouldn't be practicing with the team, potentially up until the start of the season? with the possibility of not even coming back at all? The offenses built around RW vs MG would be different. TOB made a decision that was best for the team, to go with the qb who could practice with the team. If RW starts at another school, I won't be upset at all if he succeeds, I hope he does. Although I won't be surprised at all if he decides to focus solely on baseball. 4/30/2011 8:46:53 PM |

I hate when someone thinks I'm supporting an opposite opinion just for fun. At least I think that you guys believe what you believe because you are dumb ().
Seriously though, Wilson says TOB didn't give him a fair shot, but how? Did he tell him they moved Carter-Finley and Russell showed up for spring practice in Wilmington? Did he slash Wilson's tires so he couldn't make it to Raleigh? Or did he likely say, be here in the spring and you'll have a shot to compete, to which Wilson responded by giving no commitment and forcing TOB's hand. That N&O interview doesn't tell us anything, Wilson never says he gave TOB any commitment as to when he'll be available for football.
I'm all for Wilson playing baseball, it's his best shot at making a shit ton of money, but I also want TOB to field the best team possible. And he can't do that by bending over backwards for guy who may or may not show up three weeks into the season. That's not fair to Glennon and it doesn't set a good precedent (and I don't think it would make us a better team).
Now, if anyone has anything constructive to add other than OMG FUCK TOB, it would nice to hear. 4/30/2011 8:53:41 PM |

Russell sucking it up a bit tonight for Asheville against Greenville (sc).
0-2 with a walk converted to a run, first pitch swinging pop out, terrible swing for a strikeout with runners in scoring position. And then an eighth inning error with no out on a routine grounder to second (led to 3 runs)
And another error in the eighth with two out on a routine grounder.

Can't be the starter if you aren't in practice. A phenomenal player, it will hurt to see him elsewhere, but I can't see TOB making any other decision. It was the right move.

nope. you compete for the position every fucking year. If, during PRiv's senior year summer, another QB out-competed him for the job, I probably would have wanted that QB to have a chance. Having played team sports, I know how frustrating it is to guys who show up and pay their dues in practice, only to have some random kid think he deserves not to have to pay his. it's annoying as fuck, and it ultimately hurts the team. The right thing to do is to say "show up, or you'll be benched." RW didn't want to show up, so he was gonna be benched

Russell could have just showed up. Its not like he wouldn't have seen action.
1. show up 2. wait for glennon to suck 3. come in and save the game 4. profit but i dont blame him for not taking this approach because he doesn't deserve to be treated shitty by a coach that would be out of a job if it wasn't for him.
I still do blame TOB for being a prick though. As a coach, you have to reason with two sport stars to keep their talent. I'm sure there are tons of teams that will have no problem with him not being here in the spring. Who is our backup qb? We are fucked.
At least this will accelerate the firing process of a coach that was propped up by wilson. 4/30/2011 10:10:35 PM |

At this level, the one position you can't compete over with a proven and established starter and moderately similar level backup is QB. ESPN told me so. Wiith the differences between Glennon and Wilson's play styles, their play books are completely different.
You can't have two QB's trying to lead the team. That would be too detrimental to team chemistry, and unless one player far out performs the other (Wilson to Beck) you can't have that position constantly in flux. 4/30/2011 10:14:28 PM |

Exactly. With these new comments, RW has taken a page right out of Favre's book on how to be a whiny bitch. If he wanted to play football, he should have made the commitment to play. The Packers moved on, we moved on. Hopefully our decision will end up with a similar outcome. Either way, I fully support TOB's decision to do what is in the best interest of the program. You do not let one athlete make or break your program. It takes a very unique individual to play two sports at the highest of levels. RW is not Charlie Ward, and not Deion Sanders. I wish him the best of luck, but I'm very disappointed in his comments, I thought he was a better man than that.4/30/2011 10:14:33 PM |
