Really? You cower in fear every night that the police are going to bust in your door for being "married" to another man? really? Come on, dude. Your "marriage" isn't illegal. it's just not recognized. there's a difference.

Texas GOP tried making gay marriage there a felony. The legislation they were pushing for would mean if you were homosexual and married to another and entered the state you could be arrested, charged...and well, thrown in jail.

*sighs*

What a great usage of taxpayer dollars! Christ all mighty.

Final poll gives amendment clear advantage

Quote :
"A final poll of likely North Carolina voters conducted over the weekend continues to give a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions an easy margin of victory in Tuesday’s election while the Democratic contest for governor is tightening.

The referendum holds a 16-point advantage, 55 percent in favor and 39 percent against, according to the Public Policy Polling survey, a left-leaning Raleigh-based firm. The numbers shifted little in the final week as big-names on either side of the debate – Rev. Billy Graham for and former President Bill Clinton against – made final pleas to persuade voters.

Many voters still don’t understand what the amendment would accomplish, pollster Tom Jensen said, noting that a majority of North Carolinians support some legal recognition for same-sex couples. “Opponents of the amendment had an uphill battle in convincing voters that it was anything other than a referendum on gay marriage, even though it does go a lot further than that” by forbidding civil unions and domestic partnerships, he said.

Jensen, whose firm worked for the anti-amendment campaign, believes the vote could get even more support, possibly as high as 59 percent.

The vote brought a half-million people to the polls to vote early, exceeding even the huge jump in voting for the 2008 Democratic presidential primary between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton."

I try my best not to let politics affect me too much in my everday life, but if this amendment passes, it's really going to piss me off and deepen my misanthropy.

I'm just shocked it can get that much support. Republicans don't make up that kind of a majority, and most of the Republicans I know are voting against it due to the whole idea of limited government.

It's the religious demographic that supports this, which does often include a lot of Republicans, but there are plenty of registered Democrats who let their imaginary friend tell them how to vote too.

What do people think "only domestic legal union" means?

Another amusing aspect from the Republicans that put this on the ballot:
http://pulse.ncpolicywatch.org/2012/05/07/stam-says-he-was-overruled-huh/

Quote :
"House Majority Leader Paul Stam tells the Fayetteville Observer that he didn’t want to put the overly broad marriage discrimination amendment on the ballot. He was overruled.

Stam, the Raleigh lawmaker, said he wanted a more narrowly worded amendment but was “overruled” by “national experts” he identified as the Alliance Defense Fund"

it's hard to believe that people are happy with our lawmakers wasting their time and our money on such a ridiculous and unneeded amendment with all the other pressing issues that are out there. the economy is in the shitter, unemployment is high, and they spend their time and our money on this? it's not going to help jobs. if anything, it's going to drive some businesses away. pure fucking insanity.

Apparently Joe Biden thinks the best place to learn about gay culture is Will and Grace. That's amazing. I'd love to see a Republican say that and get away with it. They'd crucify the Republican.

Logic only matters to people who place importance in logic. That's not meant as a sick burn, it's just true.

If you hate gays, and/or don't care enough about what you're voting on, logic doesn't enter into the decision.

i'll go as far as to say they're bad human beings. I can see people not agreeing with homosexual marriage, but voting for an amendment that bans it, and goes well beyond that? POS.

disagree.

many of them are bad human beings.

most are simply ignorant or have been misled by said 'bad human beings' whether they be politicians, pastors, or whomever.

fearmongering is extremely effective as a persuasive measure.

What these people don't realize is that when you open the government to religious control, then you open it to any religious control. Sure, they'll claim "christian nation"; however, I think once the door is opened, any religion can slide in. Yes, we have some religious intrusion already, but it seems that this issue is pushing people further towards "religious extremism" and thus pushes the door further open. I'm pretty sure the baptists/methodists, etc. won't appreciate catholic, jewish, mormon, or islamic laws being forced on them. I just think every little push towards religious based laws deeply hurts our country and pushes it that much closer, even if it's just a state ban on homo marriage.
