^This was always my biggest complaint. I think it should be evaluated based on the situation. Was the adult actually the students teacher? Did they coerce them for better grades or something else? And how wide an age gape are we talking 18 and 22 year old or 16 and 40 year old, because that is a huge difference in maturity on the teachers part. I started working at a school district in IT in my early twenties and one of the other tech guys in his late twenties ended up marrying a girl shortly after she graduated high school. He was not her teacher or anything and she was of age (they met doing at the local theater doing plays together), but he was a school employee so technically he could have been arrested for that even though their association had nothing to do with him working in the school district. But the day she walked across the stage he was legally in the clear.

Make no mistake. No one is saying they should be able to do it. Its a terrible act and these teachers should never be allowed in a profession that puts them close to kids ever again but we are ALSO saying it isn't necessarily a serious crime.

The manager of my local pizza place had authority over 16/17 year-old employees and used that to sleep with them all the time but it was completely legal. What is it about being a teacher that suddenly makes something go from not being a crime at all to a felony? Its a law that targets teachers specifically. Not health workers, not private athletic trainers, not employers, or any of the other professions that have authority over children. Just teachers. Teachers slip up like everyday people. We live in a society where a police officer can kill someone and get away with it because of their profession but a teacher can love someone and be punished for it because of their profession.

This woman isn't a monster. She's unfit to teach but theres no way shes a sex offender. get real.

That was the part of it that bugs me. I'm not saying old folks should be able to fuck high schoolers. I'm just pointing out there are different levels of fucked up. Some chick right out of college sleeping with a boy or girl who is 18 and just about to graduate or the nineteen year old guy sweeping floors at the high school is very different from some old bastard preying on middle school girls. ^^It used to kind of be up to families. I don't think families always made the right decision, and they probably blamed/shamed their children or tried to protect them from the legal process by keeping things secret.

But there have been at least a couple boys who've come forward to the media to say they don't want their perpetrator prosecuted because they suspect they were equally culpable in the inappropriate behavior.

Similarly, with girls, there's plenty of 15 year-olds running around town where their moms are just dragging them to the car like, "Damnit! I thought I told you to stop picking up grown men out here! Your last one was married, for Christ's sake!"
