" Multiple sources have indicated that Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes is a primary target in the coaching search.

Dykes was hired by Louisiana Tech in 2010 and in three years, the Bulldogs have posted a 22-15 record. They won the WAC in 2011, and Dykes won the conference coach of the year award in the same season. This year, the Louisiana Tech offense averaged 51.5 points per game, the most in the nation.

Prior to Louisiana Tech, the 43-year-old Dykes was offensive coordinator at Arizona and Texas Tech where he worked with receivers and quarterbacks in spread passing systems."

Dykes to interview Wednesday morning.

http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20121127/UPDATES02/121127027/-1/rss?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&nclick_check=1

This could be a smoke screen or a plan B, but all signs are pointing to Dykes getting hired.

^^ I was wondering the same thing. According to his LA tech bio:

Quote :
"Rivals.com cited Dykes as one of the countries brightest offensive minds and top ten college recruiters in the country."

There could be worse options at DC

My take on Dykes, pulling bias away since there are other guys I would much rather have:

- Love the offense
- Think he won't be the great recruiter some Rivals article has him sold as. Has filled up LaTech with a lot of JUCOs. If hired here would be in between Chuck and TOB
- Needs to hire a damn good DC or games will get old fast. We only had a chance at beating Michigan today for about 20 seconds and that's because our defense sucked. We at least tried to play it though. Dykes' team this year didn't even try.

Has a head coach ever returned to a school as an assistant? Just curious.

I'm not saying he's a great recruiter, but faulting a coach for taking a lot of JUCO kids at Louisiana Tech is like faulting a redneck for picking up a 6 at the bowling alley. If you are only looking at coaches recruiting blue chip talent to also-ran conferences you are looking at basically nobody.

Since rivals rankings was mentioned earlier, La Tech has ranked 96th & 90th the past 2 seasons

Think they weigh juco guys differently, though I could be wrong

I have a feeling that rivals ranking was based more on his recruiting as an assistant at BCS level schools...

[Edited on November 27, 2012 at 11:35 PM. Reason : just for clarification: by ranking i mean of him being a top 10 recruiter]

Not running him down for it. There's been a lot of talk we're trying to hire a "stud recruiter" and I doubt Dykes is going to be putting NC State in the top 10 on Scout rankings or whatever. We admit a few JUCOs every year but I don't think relying on it to the extent some programs (K State, a lot of non-BCS schools) do is going to fly here. As long as he gets the players he needs and his teams are good I'm fine.

Honestly I think the "stud recruiter" thing is overblown. I listened to DY's press conference just like everyone else, but very few of the realistic candidates for the job are really stud recruiters. Nobody in the MAC is lighting it up on the recruiting trail, and neither is Butch Jones. Kirby Smart looks like a great recruiter on paper, but if you take away the Alabama brand name and Saban's pedigree what are you really left with?
