Only way I see that being plausible is if some stranger picks that up, sets it in front of the weird bag, near the mail box just to put it out of the way.... On the crowd side of the railing it could wrap it around the mail box, and destroy the funny bag.
Idk. Seems like that other bag would be a stretch.
Its also possible the bomb is not even there yet, and was put next to the railing/mailbox. 4/16/2013 11:24:51 PM |

Could have also been intentionally cut off so as to prevent subsequent cell-phone initiated explosions.

Thats what CNN was saying happened that they cut the towers off for awhile till everything was locked down.
That bag beside the mailbox is pretty accurate in terms of the size that would be needed with a pressure cooker like this.
that has a timer on it as well. 4/17/2013 12:06:15 AM |

yes, but i would think you could easily swap out a cell phone inside the main portion with some type of powder or liquid fuel underneath some shrapnel and when that circuit is triggered it would send the spark causing ignition. 4/17/2013 12:11:51 AM |

the only problem with the cell phone theory is why you gonna carry a bomb around in a bag on you knowing that if someone dials the wrong number you will be blown to bits?
what if whoever had the number last has bad credit and has bill collectors calling? 4/17/2013 12:15:45 AM |

^^ That's not exactly how it works. There's a little more to it than that.
^^^^Yeah there are a ton of ways to remotely command detonate a bomb...cell phone, walkie-talkie, garage door opener, long-range cordless telephone, etc...and all kinds of other trickier stuff that I won't talk about here.
^^^^^^ You're thinking a slow-cooker (a "crock-pot")...this is a pressure cooker. They make them where they're just a really stout cooking pot with a strong lid that locks on with lugs.
Like I said in an earlier post when we were talking about low vs high explosives, low explosives (black powder, etc) can be used for bombs, but they need to be confined (pipe bomb, pressure cooker, etc) to generate a violent explosion. That's the purpose of the pressure cooker.

I'll bet that left picture is the lid, with the ripped part just to the right of the hand being where one of the locking lugs was, and that fitting being the overpressure safety valve (which obviously wouldn't be able to vent anywhere near quickly enough to prevent rupturing due to a bomb--it's designed to cope with getting it too hot on a stove). 4/17/2013 12:31:39 AM |

and yes, anything with an electric current from a battery that is triggered can essentially be used.

I'm sure they will. Somebody probably caught something. Everyone has phones with cameras on them. A big even like like, I doubt any second went undocumented.
How long did it take them to track down McVeigh? If I remember right, the best lead they had was the axle with a VIN on it. Other than that, they were scratching their heads. 4/17/2013 12:42:16 AM |

I walk around Boston all the time with a backpack... its not uncommon. That being said, a regular size backpack couldn't have held the pressure cooker. I thought they mentioned it being a duffle bag now at this point, no?
Surreal situation. We weren't able to contact people from work at the race because they cut cell service for a while.

Myth. They did not cut any cell service off. Cellular networks were undated with request, ATT even eased up their wifi network access to help with the amount of call traffic. 4/17/2013 6:35:20 AM |

Quote : | "Authorities shut down cell phone service Reports flew around social media, mainly Twitter, on Monday that police in Boston had shut down cellular networks to prevent an attacker from using a cell phone to detonate another explosive. At least one media report quoted an unnamed source with information to that effect, before later recanting.
In truth, Boston's wireless network was simply overwhelmed with the volume of calls and other communications in the aftermath of the attack. Service was slow and spotty, but never shut down. Verizon and other mobile carriers confirmed they'd never been contacted by officials asking them to shut off service.
Soon after the bombings, mobile carriers were beefing up their networks in the Boston area. AT&T made its Wi-Fi system publicly available for free to help take the load off traditional phone lines." |
