he definitely showed flashes. the kid can sling it. if he calms down and doesn't overthrow 5-6 recievers he has a fantastic day.

dude has started two years (albeit at a different school) and has had plenty of first team snaps in practice here, he shouldn't need time to calm down.

Also I don't know where you people are getting that he is an excellent pocket passer. he sure didn't show it today.

you can't understand why a guy who transfered to be "the guy" then got beat out for the job for by another transfer, might be trying a little to hard and pressing to prove he should have won it outright in his first action?

you're not really that obtuse are you ?

He was overthrowing guys badly. He wasn't pressing. It wasn't jitters. He just doesn't have any control on his throws.

Hopefully he was just a little off (assuming we need him for the next few weeks). Ya know, some days you just can't quite throw a ball exactly where you want to. At least we have Richmond to see if he can improve or get more comfortable or whatever

that's exactly what happens ... when you're pressing, and you have jitters, and you're overly excited. you throw the ball too hard and over throw people... im surprised you two are argueing this.

Jesus christ. School is cursed.

Doeren looking like a great hire though. We looked sharp for having so little talent. Wed be a top 50 team with Mitchell. Thomas sucks though so were screwed

we should be fine. if he's to be out 4-6 weeks and you assume he's back for syracuse at the latest, in that time the only game where mitchell is likely to make a difference is clemson, and even with clemson we were competitive the last two seasons, dominating them two years ago and pissing away a win with shitty defense last year.

^ I'd like to have him back by the Wake game.

We need to win in Winston and beat the 'Cuse. We should easily go bowling if those 2 happen.

Really we were going to get destroyed by Clemson with or without Brandon Mitchell. And that's not how I remember the Clemson game from last year, though our defense was atrocious in it.

game threads continue to bring out the shittiest "fans". disparaging our qb after his first possession. some "fans" seem to look forward to this time of year so they can get on the internet and cry and talk shit about their team. i just don't get it.

^This. The starting job came down to the wire. Not sure how you can say that Mitchell is that much better than Thomas. But then again this board is full of idiots who did not appreciate NFL QBs so nothing surprises me.

and if it turns out thomas can't get the passing game going, doeren will alter the game plan to focus on our three terrific running backs and we'll run a run heavy offense. that's the beauty of having a coach who knows what he's doing and how to get the most out of his personnel.

The only people who thought Thomas ever had a shot of starting over Mitchell are the same idiots who thought glennon would be better than Wilson

Mitchell was obviously more prepared with the first team. His passes and play calling were much more crisp and in sync with the WRs.

Not saying Thomas can't improve, but he will never be the wild card athele that Mitchell is...

Way too soon for people to be ripping Thomas. At least let him take some 1st team rep this week and see how he responds against Richmond. If he is still way out of sync on Saturday, then we can all start complaining.

Also what are the chances that Mitchell is back on the short end of the recovery timeframe (i.e. 4 weeks?). Sucks that we definitely won't have him for Clemson, but we were going to lose that game anyhow. It'd be great to have him as we start playing the other mediocre teams in the ACC.

This. He wasn't horrible, let him get some practice and focus this week and we'll see how he looks Saturday. We've made chicken salad out of far worse qbs.

re: ripping thomas

he looks raw; i think part of the problem was the offense being set up for mitchell, and the team having troubling adjusting. that's not the best sign of things, but i think it's a reasonable explanation. i say give him a game or two to settle into an offense that's set up for him for a week or two.

crap situation all around though. ironically my dad and i were discussing how everyone seemed well organized and clicking (before mitchell got hurt) in comparison to some previous seasons. i hope they can pick things back up this week. one thing that scares me: running shirreffs every single play he was put in. it's the very definition of insanity; not because he can't run the ball (he can) but let's try to be at least a little less predictable

i mean ... sherrifs ran the ball almost 10 times and still almost got 4 yards a carry ....

for being "predictable," that's pretty fucking solid.

after the first 4 times even skip holtz knew he was going to run it everytime

I honestly think mitchell could have had a cam newton style impact and lead us to be acc contenders. dd is a master at that type of offense similar to gus malzone and it would have just been the perfect storm in the acc because it will take teams a season or two to figure out how to coach against dd. the real sad thing is that this is mitchells only year. maybe brisset will be better.

only because we've had a stable of running backs approach. andre brown and baker were both 1000 yard type guys but they split carries.

lots of teams have that and still have 1,000 yard rushers, and in some cases, multiple ones (see Bama, Arkansas, Tennessee, etc)

I may be wrong, but I believe the announcers in the FSU game last night said Warrick Dunn was FSU's last 1000 yard rusher.

Thomas actually surprised me a little. Not so much his passing, but his athleticism. He's not a runner, but he's not a statue back there either (contrary to what I was told). He seems tough as nails too.

His biggest problem is throwing on the run. When he doesn't plant his foot and drive the ball, he has zero accuracy. When he stands in the pocket and makes throws, he threw pretty well.

Like somebody said, I think with a week to plan the offense around him, he's going to look better. That's the hope at least.

and as good as mitchell looked, he had no downfield attempts. there was never a 3rd and long so the smith slant was a 10 yard throw and the only real pass he tried. everything else was swing and screen game but those throws were fast and accurate even for short throws.

When we had shitty QBs, we split our carries evenly between Brown and Baker. Although a slight overlap, we had awesome QBs for the next 5 years and passed the fuck out of the ball or had our QB run it a lot (Wilson).

Pretty simple to see why we didn't have a 1,000 yard rusher.

Just finished watching the game this morning at work. Observations:

- Creecy looks a lot better than last year. Like he shed a few pounds and gained an extra step. Still not a blazer, but he's hitting the holes and getting to the line of scrimmage a lot faster this year.

- Dayes looked good. A little quicker/shiftier than Creecy. I still think Thornton is our best back if he can hold on to the ball...but Dayes and Creecy are both solid ACC backs. Thornton has a little bit better top-end speed. I don't see Dayes or Creecy outrunning secondary for long touchdown runs like Thornton can.

- Thomas was fine. He made some easy throws and a couple tough ones. I feel like most of his incompletions were overthrows to receivers that were covered and/or throwaways. He might have missed a couple, but he's not even close to the Stone/Beck/Davis clusterfuck (I'm not going to put Evans in that group). Its tough because I think Mitchell is perfect for the offense. I think Thomas is fine throwing the ball, but he is not a running threat which is what gives Dorean's offense the added dimension. If Thomas is going to be the QB from here on out, we're going to have to tweak the offense a bit.

- Shirreffs looked good running the ball. I think we should give him a couple series and see if he can run the offense like Mitchell...at least let him throw the ball a couple times.

- Defense was "meh". Our d-line will be fine, but linebackers have to wrap-up better. Their running back was pretty nasty, but we'll face others like him. The back 7 will have to improve as the season goes on.

- Impressed with the young WRs. Made some good catches and decent moves out in the open field. I didn't see much of any of the WRs getting open downfield (most of Thomas' incompletions). If we're going to have a bigger passing attack with Thomas in the game, those guys are going to have to get open.

Overall..I'm pretty pleased.

When was the last time FSU didn't have a future NFL QB to rely on? I don't remember FSU having an extensive run game at all in the last 10 years.
