^he has improved (at least numbers wise this year) but there are still only two ways Redick is ever going to be a consistent scorer.

Either get on a team where they will set him a bunch of screens and things to get him some open looks.

Or be on a team with a dominant big man that commands double teams which frees him or be on a team with a great guard that can penetrate and kick to create shots for him.

Redick is on the latter this year. With Howard commanding double teams and Jameer Nelson being able to get into the lane consistently it opens him up for some shots.

Wow. What's up hyperbole. Unless this is your first year ever watching college basketball.

Three guys in the last decade stand out to me as far as being able to create their own shot against anyone from 3 and absolutely having pure strokes:"

Hyperbole indeed, but when did I say anything about him being able to create his own shot? Saying someone has tremendous shooting form and saying they can create their own shot are two different things, obviously. Wood definitely hasn't shown the ability to do the latter -- most of his shots come off of fast-breaks. But I don't know how anyone who's watched basketball can deny he's got a great shot.

It has nothing to do with being funny. When white gym rats put the ball on the floor around black guys turnovers happen. When you are guarded by an asian you always post them up. When you are white and open you shoot. When you are guarded by a white guy you get physical with him. Have you guys ever played fucking basketball before? This is just basic stuff

^^ I look at them as connected, to be honest. One without the other is either: a) harmful to the offensive flow (needing to run double screens and run an entire offense through said player); or b) a pure spot up shooter.

Wood does have good form, but so do fifteen guys I play ball with on the regular. He is athletic and has good size for a 2 so hopefully he'll continue to improve though I fear he will end up as more of a wing (where he is not oversized or overathletic) when Brown gets here. He wouldn't ever get a look going up against 3's like Terrance Williams (last year) or Stanley Robinson.

^ some truth to that. Like I know my role when I play. Stand on the outside while the black guy penetrates and spot up when he dishes out when my defender collapses.

*** And I think I was a bit harsh on Redick a few posts back. His range in college was the best I've ever seen so it made up for his lack of an ability to create his own shot. The thing is though-- and this was Duke's problem every NCAA with him -- is that when he goes cold and 90% of the offense is run to get him open your team is in a lot of trouble. Further, guys in the NBA aren't worried about him blowing by them and no NBA team is going to run an offense through him, so they can put a hand in his face 27 feet from the basket. But yeah, I'll throw him up there with Gordon, Curry, et al I guess for mambaguy.

^Agreed that he's gotta expand his game to progress, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. He's supposedly a good ballhandler -- played PG some in high school -- he just doesn't really have the strength to do anything inside the paint yet. That should improve, hopefully

Ideally, I see Wood as a very good 6th man on our roster. And there is nothing wrong with that. A guy who can come in and knock down some 3's while the defenders focus in on Harrow and Brown.

Of course, this all hinges on the ability for Sid to lock down a solid wing (CJ Leslie anyone?). I just don't see Wood being a great wing player, even if he does put on size... and yes I'm racially profiling with that. Maybe he'll develop the skill of a Singler that can overcome that, but I don't think he is that kind of player.

And that isn't a knock on him at all. Not everyone is going to be a star. Role players are just as important to a team as the stars in my opinion.

Please...this guy was the black Brendan Plavich

Curry and Gordon I can agree with, but Salim was catch and shoot all the way

The fact that he could make shots out to 30 feet gave the illusion he could create his own shot, but it was just the defender foolishly giving him space; not anything Salim did to create seperation

and Kevin Durant was far and away the best at getting his shot against anyone, but he was able to shoot over most people without having to create too much space, so I'll give you a break on that one

May be true.. I only saw him play a few times and one of those was matched up against Ben Gordon. He got his shot over Gordon consistently without much help. I guess you can attribute that to the fact that Ben is undersized too...

He struck me, in that game at least, that he could get shots over guys without having the offense run through him.

^ haha well yeah, Durant being a 6'10-11" wing helped a bit. Michael Redd from Ohio State, though a few years before the time period I mentioned was another college player who could get his shot against anyone, though he was a bit bigger too.

His senior year he was one of the primary guys, but before that the offense ran through Iguadola, Gardner and Walton, and he played the Steve Kerr role to a T

You forgot Evtimov. But I guess he was implied and didn't need to be mentioned.

In addition to beyond the arc, he had that spin in the lane and underhanded scoop shot worked against everyone.

severe lack of chris johnson in this topic

his career tailed off when he changed his name. dude shouldve known from the success of cj 2.0 15 years later that you need that name to be successful

also lmao @ wood being shut down by terrence williams. no shit dude, he's going to be shut down by an nba lottery pick who's known for his defense?

haha, i can definitely see how that post would come off as sarcastic but i actually meant it.

This will be a big win in establishing our program back to respectability. I think this year the team will shed the lazy play we've seen the last two years and fight for a few wins here and there.

Northwestern is a quality opponent at this point and we need a win. If we go 6-10 in the ACC and grab a few quality OOC wins and we actually put up a fight then we will be ready to go next year when Harrow and Brown arrive.

After seeing how sick Wall and Favors are (prob the #1 and #2 picks in next years draft) it would be dumb to give up on Sidney already

god this team is hard to watch. it is bad enough that there isnt much talent there, but they just played sloppy tonight. sooo many lazy passes. got killed by a nwestern team that wasnt good last year and was w/out their best player. couldnt dream of guarding the princeton and the 1-3-1 might has well have been a russian newspaper it confused them so much.

i'm all for shooting for the stars in recruiting, but when you fall short you are really left with the scraps. we have 1, maybe 2, acc caliber players in Smith and Gonzalez each of who will have to play 40 min a game during ACC season for us to have a chance of winning. They also seem to be the only players who play with any heart.

Smith is really the only player on the team who doesnt have major flaws, although i sometimes wish he would work on his shot selection. too many double pumps from going up against double teams.

javi is almost there but doesnt have the speed to be a high caliber pg on either end of the floor. he makes alot of good decisions, but regularly gets burned on D and has trouble creating O. and although, he hit a couple big 3's, he really needs to work on his shooting.

horner tries really hard, but he just doesnt have the talent/athletic ability, plus the pump fake seems to be back.

mays shows flashes, but just doesnt seem to have the fundamentals.

wood, our supposed 3pt maestro, was 0-6 tonight, all from 3 and at least 3 of which were wide open. he also seems to offer absolutely nothing else on the O end. didnt really get a chance to watch his D tonight.

Williams, i dont know, if the rest of the team was better, he might have a chance to be a glue guy, but i just havent seem him do anything.

vandenberg, the fact that this guy is even seeing the floor in a real game is a sign of problems. he is just garbage.

havent really seen much of the rest of the guys. painter showed a little bit tongiht, but also clanged some really bad wide open shots. only thing i know about howell is that he came out for the 2nd half of the NO game sulking for some reason. could be a good reason, but not a good sign for a frosh.

all in all, i think i'm turning into my dad in bball. this team is just really depressing. feels like our major sports are regressing to the mid-90's.

our guys need to make some big strides, and fast, to avoid another bottom 3 finish and another year at home for the postseason.

i dont understand how people can really give credit to sid for recruits he DIDNT GET! say what you will about how close he was, but in the end, they arent playing at the RBC. when you are trying to build a program, shotting for the stars and failing = ending up with scraps. you have to build.

^^ do you not see the 10 fold improvement made by Roy Williams since the Syracuse game. You can tell from watching them in this MSU game that this young team has learned a TON about the SYSTEM Roy is running. He .. holeeee shit ..... COACHED them into being better.

4 fucking years. Our best year was Lowes first year with 100% Herb Recruits. Suck it and shut the fuck up. I'll tell you I TOLD YOU SO in 2011 when we are still garbage. Unfortunately Fowler won't fire anybody even then.

^^^^how? has one of our frosh or sophs shown you anything yet?

i mean, smith and javi are the only players you can argue have shown improvement over his tenure. with smith though, you could argue he really just needed PT and a good workout program. with javi, he has been up/down, so we just hope this up is here to stay, if not get higher.

not sure how that is building...

^like how he coached hickson?

I'm telling you now we're not going to ever be good under this coach. HAVE ANY OF YOU NOT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS?

Lowe would find a way to completely waste a John Wall type player. He'd have every other player on the team hating his guts because he stole their playtime from them or some other bull shit. Its ALWAYS something.

And for a lot of you dumbasses 4 years of sucking dick and ALWAYS being something, it somehow is NEVER Lowe's fault.

and for the hickson debacle, i totally place blame on sid AND jj. i just don't like 1-and-done players to begin with. i'd much rather coach up a 3/4 star recruit that stays 4 years than have a 5 star guy for one year.

dont know the answer to your 2nd question, but lowe so far this years seems to have calmed his obsessive hockey style subbing a bit. especially tonight in the 2nd half where he had the best 5 out ther for the vast majority of the time. that said, vandenberg should NOT be getting PT agaisnt real teams.
