Bullet, Why compare Gott with K, compare him with fellow mediocre P5 coaches, like John Beilein, Barnes(?), Crean etc, all of whom have attained a higher ceiling than Gott has at State. I do not have a problem with rebuilding seasons, but what is Gott rebuilding us TO? What are your expectations from him?

Beating Duke, Carolina and Louisville in the same season? Make the ACC semifinals his first 3 seasons? Makethe NCAA tournament his first 3 (probably/maybe) 4 seasons? Win more in three consecutive seasons than any NCSU coach since the early 70s?
I mean, I want to win an ACC championships and/or go deep in the NCAA tournament as much as anyone. But I don't think getting rid of Gott is going to achieve that anytime in the near future. I think Gott has just a good a chance as anyone else we could possibly hire. It's just so annoying to hear people bitch and complain and think that if we could just get rid of Gott, then we're going to be competing for National Championships. It's fucking stupid. 3/2/2015 12:36:38 PM |

I'll play along:
Losing to Wofford & NC Central at home Losing to Brad Brownell, Danny Manning, Jim Christian, and a team with no coach Tied for 7th in the ACC with Clemson, Pitt, Miami while we have a much better roster Consistently not bringing it game by game Still poor on the defensive end Guys are not improving (Barber is exception) unless getting in shape counts Bringing in top 25 classes and being consistently ranked in the 50s
Look we don't hate the guy, he has done what he was supposed to do. You just will not let us be realistic and criticize anyone and always have to play white knight. He has raised us back to relevant and we are competing for NCAA births. Is that not what he was hired for? Did anyone really think: Damn we got us a coach that will be here for 20 years?

Criticize him if you want, some of it's definitely warranted. I'm talking about the people who think it would be a good idea to fire him.
(uh, Duke got beaten handily by clemson last year (72-59). and got beat handily by us and Miami this year. and lost to fucking mercer and lehigh. with much superior talent. superior than ours. it happens to every coach)

I don't see Gott as our dynasty coach but he's done pretty well all things considered. I just don't know who people think we'd get if we dropped him. Trying to explain getting rid of Herb when he got us to the NCAA each year was difficult, but how are we going to sell the job after we fire a guy that has taken us from obscurity to relevance? Many of you forget how embarrassing our coaching searches have been in the past. 3/2/2015 1:04:23 PM |

Are we 26-3 or something? What am I missing here? We are talking about whole body of work. You seem hellbent on a few games. Those Duke teams that lost to Mercer and Lehigh went 28-6 and 27-7. Awful let me tell you. We are 17-12 with a good roster. This is the point you keep missing. It is not just a "few" games like Coach K has had over his 30 year coaching career.

[quote]Dear Wolfpack fan, Dear Wolfpack Family, I am writing to share with you the status of the search for our new head coach for men's basketball. There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is. The conversations have been candid. We have not tried to sugarcoat the challenge of rebuilding our basketball program. Our absence for 5 consecutive years from the NCAA Tournament was noted by each coach as evidence that the program is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild. Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge. That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge. I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers. Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors. But, right now, we need to remain focused on finding a talented collegiate coach who is a fighter, full of confidence and appreciation for the opportunity to lead our basketball program back to national prominence. That will happen in spite of those who believe this cannot occur. Wolfpack Basketball is destined for a revival. We will accept no less. Please keep the faith while we continue the search. Your emails and text messages of support have meant everything to me. I am blessed to be your AD. In the Spirit of the Pack, Debbie

Not our job. That's Deb's job. With the program, arena, resources we have, and the level Gott has brought us back to we would land a good coach. Lee Fowler ruined a lot of you people. NC State basketball recruits itself.

you laugh but i wonder that too. i believe ncsu will always recruit itself. its the 3rd fiddle right now but its still in the mecca of college basketball being in the triangle. also we have amazing facilities, crazy fans, and a couple heartwarming stories in our past.
as far as Gottfried, i do think we should be ridiculing him relentlessly for these losses, but wanting him to be gone? bad idea for the program. although good idea if you just want vengeance on him for ruining your weekend with the BC effort 3/2/2015 1:19:49 PM |

Sorry for the Coach K comparison. It was pretty stupid, but most of the people who are calling for Gott to be fired right now are pretty stupid, so yeah. The point was even the best coaches don't get their teams to "bring it" every game, and every season the best coaches lose to much inferior teams. And Duke and others do it even when they get the best recruits in the nation, year after year. Sorry, but State will never recruit over K and others, regardless of who is our coach. I doubt we'd get much better than Gott on that. 3/2/2015 1:51:21 PM |

as i said, stupid comparision, and i know that, but hopefully i made my point clear. people are complaining about specific losses, and i was comparing them to specific Duke losses, and also comparing their success in the NCAA tournmanent over the last several years. But while we're at it, let's compare their first four years at Duke and State....

I'm not saying fire him right now. But we have to at some point, even if he ends up making the NCAAs every year. I think Gott can stay for now, but not for reasons like "He's made the NCAAs every year", "He's beaten DUke, UNX", "Top 25 recruiting classes". If he seems promising enough to build to an ACC regular season title(the hallmark of consistency) during his tenure, then keep him. Otherwise, be on the lookout for better coaches. We CAN get good coaches here. NC State needs higher standards FFS.
Sorry if I'm annoying. This is a typical PP post.

unless there is a history of early exits from the NCAA Tourney, it's kind of silly to put that much stock into any single-elimination game
same with a loss or two per season to an inferior team
gotta look big picture, and it's much easier to make arguments when looking big picture, too 3/2/2015 2:18:26 PM |

Lets give Archie a few more years at Dayton before we crown him king...as well as give our own coach a few more years to see what else he can do. It's not like we're looking at Sidney fucking Lowe here...we're about to go to our 4th straight tourney and we just beat Duke and UNC in the same year. Basically we're doing shit that we haven't done since V was here...so what the fuck are you guys bitching about??

Agreed firing Gott would be stupid at this point. I know people want better things out of the program, but lets face it we arent going to be winning ACC titles or national titles regardless of who our coach is. If we make the tourney every year you should all be pretty damn happy. Sure, I would love to stop being on the bubble every year, but at least it keeps things entertaining.
Also, there is something to be said about having the same coach over a long period of time. Typically this can help with recruiting knowing the program is stable and not turning over coaches every 4-5 years.

^^^ That's a bad attitude as well. We can win shit, but it's not like we can turn into UNC/Duke/Kentucky in a five year window. It took decades for those blue-blood pricks to get where they are at. Not saying we can't make a run on any given year, but it's going to take a few years of sustained success to make that next jump. I mean fuck...UConn won the natty last year (and several more in the last 15 years) and they're probably not even going to make the tourney this year.
College sports is a fickle fuck.

As of the 5th season for a head coach, I would like to see us consistently competing for a spot in the top 4 of the conference year after year, making deep runs in the ACCT with legitimate shot at winning, and consistently making NCAAT appearances.

Dude has had a fuckload of years to prove what he can do. He is what he is. Look at this shit. It's the same reason Indiana is doomed under Tom Crean
I said the same things after the UNC win so I'm not sure what people are so pissed about. Archie (or whoever) might be exactly the same as Gott, hell he could be worse. But we don't KNOW that. We know what Gott is. The best you can hope for is that we get hot in a tournament with some NBA level talent and we get a once in a decade level miracle where a bracket falls apart for us. Could he win an ACC title? Sure, in the same way Leonard Hamilton did. Will it be sustainable? I'm struggling to see how.
Next year I actually expect to be the best defense we'll ever get out of a Gott team. Let's see if that team can actually spend most of the year ranked and/or compete at the top of the conference.3/2/2015 3:15:11 PM |

Think of this as basically the same as the herb sendek argument except it didnt take him several years to get to the tourney for multiple years in a row. Do we really want to kick out another coach and fall into years and years of not making the tourney? Best case scenario maybe we get a little better and start hovering around the bottom of the top 25 and being a 6 seed most years. We need to do whatever we can to setup to be in prime position when Roy, K, Boeheim, and Pitino retire to take over. That is when we will have a chance to be in a better position than we are now. I suppose you could make the argument that if Gott cant get any better maybe we better find that guy now so by then we will have a solid long term coach in place. Either way, until those things happen just be happy that we even are getting to enjoy March every year even if it does involve shitstorm games like St. Louis. 3/2/2015 3:24:35 PM |

what i think:
Archie >= Gott > Roulette Wheel > Herb >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lowe
what most of this board probably thinks:
Gott = Archie > Roulette Wheel ???
The big divide is that I'd be willing to put up with bullshit when I'm dealing with a 36 year old coach in his first major gig. With Gott we're waiting for...what? First, we know he's not figuring anything out after 20 years and second, if he does, he's already in his 50s and most coaches who aren't Hall of Famers or John Beilein start to decline once they hit 60. Does anyone really think he's going to keep recruiting like a boss once his libido goes and he'll be too tired for the post-UNC win nightlife?
