Replacing the lcd would be real simple. My iphone was out in the rain for a while and the only things that broke were the receiver and the light/proximity sensor. At the time I couldn't find anywhere that sold those parts or how to replace them so i was like fuck it and got a new one. However, when i took it apart to see if i could figure out whats wrong, the lcd came out real easy. The digitizer is a bit more complex, but its also doable. 4/7/2010 1:57:11 PM |

Even if you don't buy your parts from here they have excellent repair guides video/pdf illustrated. Their guides cover more or less all apple devices and are free (guides) 4/7/2010 2:02:49 PM |

^gotcha. Sorry. Yeah i think my proximity sensor was damaged from the water. It would just get stuck on the Apple boot screen. I didn't want to go through the trouble of not having a phone so i just paid the $199 for the replacement. 4/7/2010 2:06:13 PM |

Here's a link to the LCD that I used:
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-Original-Display-Screen/dp/B001UJD5AM/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1
and the tools (which I'm sure are pretty common) are found in the "Frequently Bought Together" section on that page. 4/7/2010 4:50:05 PM |

the multitasking looks sweet. also, I saw in app-sms. If there's something like sbsettings, i won't need jailbreaking anymore... 4/8/2010 1:21:33 PM |

So as near as I can tell, the multitasking is essentially the same thing Microsoft is doing with Windows 7 Mobile Phone Gold Standard Platinum Edition? 4/8/2010 1:24:30 PM |

So what they've shown looks great for a phone, basically save states + APIs to allow apps to do certain tasks in the background. However, for the iPad, this still doesn't cut it. 4/8/2010 1:33:14 PM |
1337 b4k4 All American 10033 Posts user info edit post |
^ It's probably going to have to for a while. With only 256MB RAM and no virtual memory, it's not like they can keep much open in the iPad. At least not until the next iteration comes along.
OT: Does anyone besides me feel weird saying things like "only 256MB of RAM"? 4/8/2010 1:35:50 PM |

the background audio is nice. The rest is pretty meh. Hubs are still a way better solution than multiple apps.

This is something I disagree on. A background image (photo not solid color/gradient) makes the home screen look cluttered and unusable. You have too many color variations in the image that it makes it harder to quickly and easily recognize icons. The example above makes it near impossible to read some of the icon labels because the text is almost the same color as the background.
A background image works for desktops because the primary method of running apps isn't distracted by the image. (Start menu in windows or the dock/finder in Mac OS X)." |
It would appear that Steve Jobs also disagrees with your sentiment about having a wallpaper on your home screen.

Doesn't mean the sentiment is wrong however. You'll note that the backgrounds demoed in this have been carefully selected so as not to generate the problems Golovko was talking about. 4/8/2010 1:47:45 PM |

Oh, I left the rest of my point out in my search for the silly argument about home screen wallpapers ...
I am a bit amazed that Steve can make such a big deal about so many of these common sense features, like WALLPAPER, and copy/paste, and background audio streaming ... as if it's something amazing, which their implementation is not.
Also, do their presentations remind anyone of anything?

thats one thing I admire about apple. They don't cram a bunch of half ass not fully thought out features into their first device/version. Thats how it should be done.
Also gives them plenty of time to gather data on their users, how they use the device and what changes need to be made to make the experience better.
I guess thats what sets them apart from everyone else.
Basically what you want was iPhone 3gs + iPhone OS 4 to have been what we got back in 2007
and then come June/July we'll replace the 3GS with what they announce and that will be what should have been released from the very beginning. Rinse & repeat for June/July 2011.

It took them 3 and a half years to go "you know what, it'd probably be handy if people could put things in folders" rather than having to go through page after page after page of apps.
I mean, most of these things are basic OS additions that should've been added years ago.
