Hey Bobby, maybe you can answer this for me:

I saw it a lot when I worked at Galaxy, and it looks apparent in your photo, but what's the deal with the women always wearing the traditional style of clothing and the men wearing Westernized clothing? I see it all the time. Is it a style thing or a class thing? Are women sort of "required" to dress traditionally where men are allowed to wear regular clothes?

I say this because about 75-80% of the women who would come in would be in Saris, but I think I might have seen maybe one man in a kurta all 5+ years I've been there.

Honestly, I have no idea. I can wax intellectual for hours on the nuances of regional bbq, but ask me about Indian cultural norms, and I'm clueless.

I'm guessing it might be that Kurtas are more traditionally a hindu/north indian thing, and my folks are from the deep south of india, and while men wear kurtas, I've never seen anyone from where I'm from wear one for formal occasions. Where I'm from most folks are Catholic, so there is a weird coalescence of hindu and christian influence in the regional culture where I'm from.

No it is not a required thing. It just makes older women kind of feel awkward to suddenly start wearing westernized clothing when they have spent a majority of their life wearing Indian stuff. So basically they are resistant to get out of their comfort zone when they come here to the US to suddenly start wearing westernized clothing. Also some of the women that you may have seen in Galaxy are here on temporary family visits.
For the men it’s different. They wore the same westernized stuff back home and they wear the same stuff here too. The only men who wear traditional clothing on daily basis are the farmers and politicians. Of course there are always some exceptions.

So, I guess as a follow-up, why is that the dress style in India? Why do women dress traditionally and the men dress Westernized?

Men ended up copying the British faster then women. They started going for western style education before women. They travelled overseas long before women. So they were influenced by the western culture before women. Also the fact that women in India have lot of options to choose from within the traditional fashions may have contributed to this too.

this is from last summer

but it is in response to someone who confessed about me and had suspicions that i might be a land whale. i am not super skinny, and this dress could be hiding a lot of fat (that is kinda why i like it) BUT it is a non myspace angle. so THERE


and here i am last summer doing a mother daughter fashion show (they ran out of mothers obviously). my hair was all edward scissor hands like. i told them it wouldn't hold curl but they tried anyway and then put a shitload of hairspray in and....well....it turned out very nestlike. but you can see my legs and ish.
