[shrug] their garden... i guess they're allowed to pull out whatever they don't want growing in it.
while i know this is just a hypothetical, i can imagine press coverage being much worse if apple decided to let devs have a free-for-all with apps.
people have suggested that apple just publish a set of guidelines for what they'll approve, but people will bitch about those, too. 4/11/2010 12:35:14 AM |

Opera Mini just got approved. It's already available in some countries but not the US just yet. Should be any time now. That's one app that everyone said would never be approved. Should be interesting to check out.

Hmm...The fixed zoom settings aren't great. Seems to have two zoom options. Too small to read:
and a little bit bigger than I'd prefer:
Oh, nevermind, it zooms to fit with a single touch to whatever column you want. Not bad. Still not sure it's as intuitive as Safari.
nevermind the nevermind, it still seems to have only two zoom levels. Hmm..

I wonder if this means they're finally going to loosen some of the "duplicates functionality" restrictions.
I mean, they're allowing devs access to the photo, music, and video libraries in the 4.0 SDK right? Now they're approving another web browser (although, to be fair Opera has gone out of their way to point out that Opera Mini functions in a very very different way than Safari does).
What's next, reconsidering the Google Voice app? 4/12/2010 10:16:00 PM |

^^ no pinch to zoom?
And is there a way to set it as the default browser? like for email links and stuff? 4/12/2010 10:22:42 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
nope, no pinch to zoom. And the scrolling is just...different. I'm not ready to say worse yet, but it's not giving me a great first impression. As far as I can tell, there's no way to make anything but safari the default browser. Could probably be done by hacking something, but I certainly wouldn't know where to look for that.
well, you can pinch to zoom, but it just goes between those two zoom levels.

I just did a search for it and it showed up. I dunno. sometimes these things trickle in at different times. Rendering wise it doesn't really seem to be any faster than safari to me. I didn't do any tests, but I really wasn't just blown away with it's speed or anything.
All in all, I'm not really that impressed. But I am glad that it's there just because it's another option, and it means we might get to see even more options in the future. 4/13/2010 12:47:48 AM |
timswar All American 41050 Posts user info edit post |
Just downloaded it this morning, I like it and don't.
It's faster, noticebly faster. But it's not going to break any records.
The spellchecker doesn't function in it, which can be annoying if you're not an iPhone typing pro. Im on the fence about that since i have a love-hate relationship with the spellchecker.
Also, you can't tap the top of the screen to get the page to auto-scroll to the top.
It's ok, once I set it to fullscreen mode so the taskbar didn't clog the page it became a lit more functional. I'll probably usr it as my default browser until either the lack of spellchecker becomes irritating or I become a better phone typist.

I haven't had any problem, in fact most of my replies yesterday were done from Opera Mini. I just clicked Reply to Topic and touched Post Reply when ready.
Sometimes you need to double tap it, I've hit the same problem with Safari at times.
I think message boards are one of the areas where Opera is actually superior to Safari. Seeing everything stacked linearly made it much easier to read (although there is a bit of a learning curve). There are a few pluses I've discovered. Opera Sync works very well, being able to select the search I use is a nice feature, the tab system works better than switching windows, and the start up page is nicer than waiting for Safari to load the last bookmark folder I'd used (particularly since I mainly use the phone browser for only 3 webpages).
I still haven't been in an Edge area to test and see if it makes using the internet more tolerable, but I'm sure I'll be in New Bern next week to see. 4/14/2010 9:47:15 AM |

Browser Speed Tests: iPhone's Mobile Safari vs. Opera Mini http://lifehacker.com/5516038/browser-speed-tests-iphones-mobile-safari-vs-opera-mini
Quote : | "It's pretty clear that, while Opera Mini features seriously impressive page load times, it's still behind Mobile Safari on several levels—some of its disadvantages are due to Safari's advantaged position as the system default, some of them probably have more to do with the youth of Opera Mini on the iPhone platform. You will, however, notice the considerably faster page loads when you're using Opera Mini, and with the web, speed is everything. If Opera could keep the speed and fix some of the rough edges, it could be really impressive.
Speed aside, use Opera Mini for a while and you'll quickly miss the smooth zooming of Mobile Safari and the nice font rendering. (When you're looking at a desktop version of a site zoomed all the way out on Opera Mini, the type renders as big blocks of color and is generally unreadable.)
Still, I'm holding out hope for Opera Mini. The speedy page loads alone make it an ideal browser for a quick lookup, and its tabbed browsing interface is, in my opinion, superior to Mobile Safari's." |
