god you're fucking stupid...Painter and Howell aren't playing big minutes because they aren't good enough at this point in their careers to take minutes away from Horner and Smith. I guess we should just play the freshmen for 20 minutes a game and lose, that way they will be "seasoned" in time for us to lose ACC games too. If Cothron, Brown and Harrow ARE good enough when they get here to play big minutes, Lowe will give them big minutes...it's pretty fucking simple.12/8/2009 4:11:37 PM |

Hopefully nobody is assuming that. But it's possible. And if we are a "top 3 ACC team" next year, it won't be solely b/c of next year's class. The seemingly solid foundation that's being built right now will be a big factor in that.12/8/2009 4:15:13 PM |

whatever, he got entry passes all the time, he didnt have enough lower body strength to bang with real acc big men, and when he did post up, he couldnt handle a double team. obviously a guy that needed a year to bulk up and learn to handle the speed/size of college. prob would have been great his soph year. 12/8/2009 7:36:35 PM |

but i would hope that in the same situation, sid gives the ball to the guy that is nba material
and if ben mccauley doesn't like it, that's tough shit
i understand the whole argument about disrupting team chemistry, but it doesn't look like we're missing Ben or Costner too badly now. if somehow we end up getting CJ Leslie, I hope Sid starts him over Wood at the 3, I don't care if Wood were to get a little upset by it. if you have a great player, then the great player should play.
and all the hickson haters really make me lol 12/8/2009 7:59:02 PM |

nba material != nba ready or even necessarily college ready
plenty of great college players arent nba material
and i'm not a hickson hater, if anything i am putting blame on sid for throwing him into the fire when he wasnt ready. i think if hickson had stuck around a 2nd year he could have been a star. as it was, sid decided to roll his dice and make significant changes to a team that had finished the year hot and made it to the tourney finals. it clearly didnt work out, for whatever reasons. you cant say that if he had done differently, it would have been better, that is pure guesswork. however, hickson didnt win any games for us, that is for sure.
and the wood argument is pure idiocy at this pt, it is no big decision to start a frosh over a guy that sucks. hickson took PT from two guys who had proved themselves in acc play.

Lol, I don't buy any argument about Hickson not being better than McCauley. Look at how McCauley performed w/o any serviceable guards (last year) versus how Hickson performed with basically the same set of guards (a year earlier).
Or hell, even compare the two during the season they played together. Some games they get the same number of minutes and Hickson put up better numbers pretty much every time. And some games McCauley would absolutely disappear. 12/8/2009 9:33:34 PM |

He scored a career best 33 points later in the season. Hickson was named ACC Rookie of the Week on three occasions, scored 20 or more points seven times and registered 10 double-doubles. He set an ACC single-game freshman record by pulling down a career-high 23 rebounds and also added 13 points and four blocked shots versus Clemson University. Hickson scored a career-high 33 points on 10-11 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds versus Western Carolina University and put up 27 points and 14 rebounds versus Miami in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
For the season he averaged 14.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg (leading all freshmen) while shooting 59% from the field. He was selected to the All-Freshman team in the ACC, and an honorable mention for All-ACC." |

^^^Yeah, I liked McCauley on offense but he was always a huge liability on defense. His interior D consisted of putting up his arms and standing still. JJ, as a freshman, altered shots in every game he played in.
What really pissed me off was when the team would act butt hurt and just stand around once they passed they ball into JJ instead of crashing the boards. You could also see the hesitation and unwillingness of some guys to pass him the ball, even when JJ had the favorable matchup.
JJ was by far the best player on that team and on a team without a capable pg Lowe was damn right to make him the core of the offense. It is absolutely obvious that Atsur made a lot of players look a hell of a lot better than they actually were.
My biggest problem with Lowe that season was his unwillingness to bench the "Big 3 Vaginas" as they poisoned the team with their shitty primma donna attitudes. 12/8/2009 10:49:51 PM |

He never benched them, but he did cut their playing time significantly toward the end of the year. I remember Tracy Smith starting a few games at 4 and JJ and 5 -- Costner and McCauley came off the bench.
The problem was it was too little too late. Add Gavin Grant (a 4th Vagina) to that team, and the fact we had NO point guard -- Javi's first year, Degand injured, Marques Johnson -- and you have all the makings of a shitfest of a year.12/9/2009 10:29:38 AM |

To be fair, at the time it would have been just as unpopular with the fans if he would have sat our most accomplished and experienced players on the bench because they were being babies about playing time. He was in a tough place. 12/9/2009 10:39:12 AM |

A lot of good in that article. I like reading this ... it shows Lowe and Co. are thinking outside the box to help the team learn how to win consistently:
Quote : | "Lowe enjoyed his team's win at Marquette so much that he and his staff edited a highlight tape of all of the positive things his players did.
"We titled it "How we won this game" and we showed them all of the things they did to win that ball game," Lowe said. "Just to remind them, this is how you play the game."

is this or is this not the thread to discuss Sidney Lowe's credibility?
If you want to think he's a credible coach after posting nothing better than a 10th place finish in the ACC for the past 3 years because he beat a mediocre Marquette team on the road then that's fine. I'm just pointing out how ludacris it is to say that after his 3 year track record.

To those who believe he is "still credible":
Lowe's body of work at NC State has been pretty bad. Sure he has won a few games here and there that he had no business winning (the lone UNC win, the win over Duke, the Marquette road win, etc). But if you look at the over all trend of the wins/losses and where we finish in the ACC since his arrival there is absolutely nothing to suggest he's a credible coach. We've gotten ZERO results in his 3 years here.
Now the recruiting he's done has been credible, if not incredible, and some of those recruits haven't even arrived on campus of course. This is year #4 and he's started off better than any could have expected, but we've only played 7 games. A win on the road against Marquette, as I said earlier we probably had no business winning, and if we played them 10 times in the same circumstances we'd probably only win maybe twice?
To blindly declare Lowe as "still credible" after he's produced ZERO results is definitely far fetched.

You'll have to remember, I'm not the Athletics Director here. However, I'm in the same boat as a lot people after the sick recruiting class he managed for next year, so if I were AD I'd give him this year and next. If he can't make the NCAAs by next year though he's gone.
Calipari and Barnes were big name coaches that turned us down, but we had them on the hook, they just got away. I'd probably hire a firm this time to try and hire a big name proven coach and have a solid back up. I don't buy into the hype that a big name coach wouldn't want to coach at NC State (historic basketball school) and in the ACC (the best BBall conference in the nation). We were very close on Barnes and Calipari.
