I hate the term "viral video".

It was coined by complete outsiders from business and journalism, who hadn't participated and had barely even observed until they became too big a thing to ignore, who needed a term to describe something they clearly didn't understand, and who wanted to use the internet as a gimmick, for marketing or whatever else... Assholes, basically. People on the internet had known and used the word "meme" before the middle-aged assholes running the old media even realized the concept existed.

...Assholes.

Those videos are memes themselves, though. That's my point. That's at least how they started.

I suppose some people might want a term for the "look at this funny/cute video!!!!!" emails they get sent from their grandmothers, but personally I don't think that really deserves a term.

I kind of disagree. A meme to me kind of denotes something that is around to last and is usually not intended to be popular. Memes usually are things that get reposted so much before they are 'viral' that the general purpose of the video or clip has been changed.

For example: ICP - Miracles. A meme because its a legit music video, but viral videos are the kind of shit that is on college humor every day. You look at it once show it to a couple of people then someone posts it on the wolfweb 3 months later, and you never see it again.

I would say "meme" fits viral video. the definition of meme has nothing to do with quality, which seems to be what AstralAdvent is suggesting. As long as the video gets passed along from one person to another, it's a meme.

This says nothing about its ability to last over time (just as some genes - or their variants - cause themselves to die out with the individual in which they arise). It just says something about how it transmits. Some memes are quickly spread, others aren't. Some last a long time, some are just a few days or weeks.

No meme has nothing to do with quality. I just think viral videos are temporal. I've seen viral videos that are funnier than things that are memes like lolcat (never once laughed at that shit)

shit like Cakefarts or even chatroullete would be viral because it has no potential to last for any amount of time.

^ memes don't have anything to do with time, either. it merely has to do with it being spread from person to person but longevity isn't part of it (i.e. mutant genes)

im f5'n like crazy up to 10, get in at 9:59, reserve 3 seats, best available is in the 2nd price tier, about 25 rows from the stage in the orchestra (also only 15 or so rows from the back wall)
