Not just to the neck, but right through his jugular vein.

When he was grasping at his neck, he accidentally stuck his finger in the hole in the vein. That, combined with the fact that the paramedics were at his end of the ice, literally saved his life.

He eventually played again, but in the meantime he had some severe mental trauma and developed a cut-proof collar that a lot of guys still wear (although I don't, which pisses off my dad to no end).
