The Bobcats limped their way through another injury-ravaged season before a too-little, too-late burst at the end gave their fans a ray of hope for the coming season. From the start, the Bobcats had trouble staying in one piece. Star forward Gerald Wallace got his bell rung on a hard early-season landing and was off his game for the first two months, a big reason the team broke out of the gate 7-21. Point guard Brevin Knight had similar woes; a series of abdominal injuries conspired to keep him out of 37 games and limited him in several others. The frontcourt situation wasn't much better. Emeka Okafor got off to a dominant start at the defensive end and played at an All-Star level early on, helped by the fact that he wasn't carrying such a heavy offensive load. He still had better luck than Sean May, a talented first-round pick in 2005. His poor conditioning and troublesome knees combined to keep him out of 44 games after he'd missed 59 as a rookie. And after two solid years in Charlotte, 7-footer Primoz Brezec checked out early in the year with exhaustion and produced little the rest of the way. Then there were the self-inflicted wounds. Charlotte took Adam Morrison with the third overall pick and plugged him into the starting lineup; he clearly wasn't ready and ended up having a horrible season. The Bobs went through the whole season with one true shooting guard (Matt Carroll) on the roster, and nobody who could defend the position. The D was so bad from that spot that they spoke in gushing terms about midseason scrap-heap pickup Derek Anderson. At least the injury to May allowed the Cats to discover a quality player hidden away on their bench. Charlotte barely used Argentine rookie Walter Herrmann for half the season, but when he joined the lineup midway through the campaign the team almost immediately started clicking. There were other factors, too -- Wallace finally started playing the way he had in 2005-06, and Morrison started seeing fewer minutes around the same time. Nobody was really watching them since the Bobcats were so far out of the race by this point, but Charlotte played extremely well in the second half of the season. Even with Okafor slowed, the Bobcats were 26-28 over the final 54 games; subtract the 15 games he missed and the team went 22-17. In retrospect, only the slow start kept Charlotte out of the playoffs. While this had the perverse effect of disappointing some fans who wanted the team to tank for a better lottery pick, it does provide a strong positive sign heading into 2007-08. However, one should remember that some of this was as much luck than talent -- Charlotte had the victory margin of a 29-win team. Charlotte was a poor offensive team in 2006-07, ranking 27th in offensive efficiency; one of the reasons it played so much better down the stretch was because the offense woke up. The Cats took care of the ball, turning the ball over on just 15.5 percent of their possessions, but unfortunately too many of their shots missed the mark: Charlotte ranked 25th in field goal percentage and 26th in true shooting percentage. Two players can take the lion's share of the blame for this: Raymond Felton and Morrison. Both were forced to do too much because the Bobcats didn't have enough offensive options early in the year, when Wallace was still shaking out the cobwebs, Herrmann wasn't in the rotation and Carroll wasn't playing heavy minutes. But Felton and Morrison shot 38.4 percent and 37.6 percent, respectively, and they shot a lot, combining for 25 field goal attempts per game. Clearly, some roles need redefining here. The Bobcats weren't much better at the defensive end, ranking 20th in defensive efficiency. For the second year in a row, they were good at only one thing, forcing turnovers, although the disparity was far less than a year earlier. Charlotte ranked sixth in the league this time, forcing miscues on 16.5 percent of opponents' possessions. Though you might think that it was mainly because of players like Wallace and Knight playing the passing lanes, it wasn't just a question of gambling for steals -- they had a high rate of turnovers on non-steals too. However, the rest of the defense left a lot to be desired. The Bobcats gave up a high shooting percentage and fouled too often, and their rebound rate was below the league average. Okafor was awesome but could only do so much, because wing defenders like Carroll and Morrison were routinely beaten off the dribble and the power forwards contributed little at the defensive end. Offseason Moves Michael Jordan continued to make over the Bobcats' front office and coaching staff, and as expected filled most of the positions with trusted allies. Rod Higgins came over from Golden State to serve under him as the general manager, while Bernie Bickerstaff transitioned to a suspiciously vague "executive vice president" role after being the team's coach and general manager during its incipient stages. The notoriously frugal Bobcats surprised observers by actually spending some money, splurging to keep two free agents and making a trade; at the end of it all they were slightly over the salary cap (gasp!). The next step is to extend Okafor's contract, something that had seen little movement as training camp began. • Replaced Bernie Bickerstaff, hired Sam Vincent It was an odd time to replace the coach -- Bernie had these guys running pretty well down the stretch and the 33 wins were the most by a third-year expansion team in the past two decades -- but inevitably a new team president wants his own guy in there. Vincent is an old Jordan ally, and working as an assistant for a 67-win team always helps too. While there are whispers that he's not ready for the gig yet, we thought the same thing about another Sam up in Toronto and he seemed to grow into the job quite rapidly last season. The bigger issue is that by limiting the list of candidates to MJ's inner circle, he effectively excluded about 98 percent of the league -- that's not a great way to get the best people. • Traded Brandan Wright to Golden State for Jason Richardson The Bobcats knew their cap space wouldn't be able to attract any A-list free agents, so instead they set their sights on a trade. They exchanged the No. 8 pick in the draft for Richardson, who is making near-max money and still has four years left on his deal. Taking on a contract that size is a big risk because Richardson isn't an All-Star and missed half of last season with knee problems. Plus, they gave up a lottery pick to get him. Because of that, I'm not sure this move was in the Bobcats' long-term interests, but it definitely helps them out in the short term -- shooting guard was a glaring hole. • Re-signed Gerald Wallace Though he's played at an All-Star level the past two seasons, Charlotte's anonymity has left Wallace strangely undervalued by the market. He re-upped on a five-year, $57 million deal that's good value given how insanely productive he's been the past two seasons; the lone worry is that the back end of the deal might get cumbersome as his athleticism wanes. But you can say that about any number of star players, and most of them are far more expensive for the same production. • Drafted Jared Dudley and Jermareo Davidson I'm a huge Dudley fan and think he'll be able to play a role off the bench immediately as a backup small forward and occasional smallball power forward. While he's not a great athlete, he can make shots, he's physical, and he knows how to play. Second-round pick Davidson is a decent athlete but soft and too in love with the jumper; he may need some D-League seasoning. • Waived Brevin Knight, re-signed Jeff McInnis The Bobcats let Knight go, eating about $2 million in guaranteed salary in the process, even though it left them without a credible backup point guard. I would argue they're still without one, as McInnis hasn't been effective in three years and plays virtually no defense; signing him for the minimum and calling it a solution is an indication that the Bobcats haven't completely abandoned their skinflint ways. • Re-signed Matt Carroll, let Jake Voskuhl Carroll signed a six-year, $27 million deal, which was a bit of a surprise on the length and money, but after Jason Kapono inked his four-year, $24 million deal with Toronto it became apparent that teams were placing a high premium on shooters this summer. It's a risk on the years, obviously, but a decent contract given Carroll's offensive production the past two years. I'll talk more about the latter two moves in a minute. "

So behind Okafor and May, that leaves us with: • Brezec, an injury risk himself and one who's not very effective in any case. • Othella Harrington, who has an ankle problem and may not be able to play this year and, by the way, is 33 and was terrible last season. • Ryan Hollins, a 2006 second-round draft pick who hardly played last year, and • Davidson, a 2007 second-round draft choice who doesn't like to play near the basket. The situation bears watching, especially since few people think the 'Cats will spend the money to get decent help if injuries decimate the frontcourt. Instead, the Bobcats will look at a lot of nights playing small with Wallace as the power forward and Herrmann, Davidson or (shudder) Morrison backing up. Outlook Nobody is talking about the Bobcats, but the way they finished last season people really ought to be. Even with all the injuries they were a .500 team over the final 50 games, and in the offseason they turned their single biggest weakness into a strength by trading for Richardson. Besides, all of their key players are 27 or younger except Herrmann, who is entering his second NBA season, so as a group they should play substantially better than they did last season. Another reason to expect Charlotte to improve is Morrison. He's either going to get better or he's not going to play, but there's no way he's going to soak up 2,000 minutes and be as abysmally bad as he was last season. As far as question marks go, the two that stand out are Vincent and the management. Vincent is an unknown quantity, and if he's learning the ropes on the fly it could really harm the Bobcats in a playoff race. As for the management, will they spend the money if Felton goes down and they're stuck with somebody like McInnis running the point? Or will owner Robert Johnson tie Jordan's hands behind his back? For that matter, Jordan is far from proven in the front office himself -- the Morrison pick was a bust, the verdict on the Richardson trade is uncertain, and the Vincent hiring raised eyebrows. Nonetheless, it seems to me the Bobcats' young guys are ready to step into the limelight. It will be a tight race for the East's final two or three playoff spots, but I'm guessing Charlotte will get its first playoff game since the Hornets skipped town. Prediction: 40-42, 4th in Southeast, 8th in Eastern Conference "

I'm not too optimistic about our playoff chances based on our lineup.

Just too many holes, all of these weak drafts the past few years are going to show this season.

I still can't get the taste of that Carroll signing out of my mouth.

we certainly need some front court depth...our starting lineup is nice...seriously nice for the East...our depth is gonna be tough...still I'm optimistic about Morrison's sophomore season...he certainly won't have as much pressure to be a big contributor so maybe he'll be more likely to let the game come to him...also supposedly Ryan Hollins is penciled in as the starting center over Primoz...they said Hollins gained about 10 pounds of muscle in the offseason...he probably still looks like a beanpole, but that lack of bulk down low is a good thing if we're trying to run a fast break type offense

Hollins didn't do much at all last year, but he can jump out of the gym...he certainly has the potential to be a great shot blocker and overall defensive center...not much pressure for him to score low post baskets

I'm not ready to give up on Morrison yet even though he basically sucked last year...he had on games and off games...but when he was really on, he was something special to watch...I recall the game @ New Jersey where Morrison went off...drained a couple fadeaway 3 pointers right in Vince Carter's eye...I think if A-Mo can learn to better ignore some of the external influences, like fans, he can still be a good player

Somehow, I doubt he'll be hearing that this year. Morrison's 45.0 true shooting percentage was the second-worst among small forwards. That he averaged double figures anyway was testament to the minutes Charlotte kept giving him and the fact he never stopped shooting. But he had a horrible, horrible season, and anyone who says differently just wasn't paying attention. Scouting report: Wait, there's more. Morrison might have been the worst one-on-one defender in the game, standing far too upright with his hands at his sides while scorers zoomed past him. So bad was it that as soon as he entered one game against Washington, the Wizards immediately called an isolation for DeShawn Stevenson -- probably the only time they called that play all season -- to attack Morrison on a post-up. Though Stevenson is four inches shorter, he scored easily. Offensively, Morrison forced too many long jumpers but has the tools to perform better. He's good at shooting runners going to his right and, as his college performances indicated, he's capable of shooting much better from outside. Part of the problem is that he took so many bad shots -- Morrison's usage rate was well over the league average even though he couldn't make anything, with a contested fadeaway going to his right seeming to be his favorite option. For now, Morrison needs to content himself with being a spot-up guy instead of going one-on-one so much. If he could get open without the ball more often it also would help -- he doesn't seem comfortable catching off a pin-down and firing. 2007-08 outlook: Last year was so brutal that the expectations for Morrison need some serious revision. Charlotte cost themselves several games by giving him so many minutes last year; even a "replacement-level" player would have been a huge improvement. One has to think he'll be better in his second go-round, but the Bobcats have a real shot at the playoffs this year and can't afford to be wasting 30 minutes a game seeing if he can get things figured out. If he can back up at one of the forward spots for 10 minutes a night and hit a few jump shots, that'd be a nice start. As far as living up to being the No. 3 overall selection in the draft? I think we can already put that idea in the trash bin."

lost our first preseason game, won the next 2...also Morrison of all people is the only Bobcat to score in double figures in all 3 games...Hollins has been decent with blocks and rebounds but still needs some work on his scoring...Wallace seems to have improved his free throw shooting...he was 12/15 against the Heat on Saturday

Wallace is still shooting pretty good from the line (12/16 last night) and finished with 20 points...Jermareo Davidson looked real good playing some minutes at the 4 or 5 spot...I think he was 5/6 from the field and had a couple strong rebounds...Morrison and Carroll each shot the ball well...Emeka looks like a consistent threat for 15 and 12 every night...Felton looked pretty decent...Bobcats were down 14 at halftime but made a comeback and won by 10...great game
