Watch Rivers' numbers take off now. His receiving cast of VJ and Buster Davis is underwhelming to say the least, which has allowed teams to stack the box and double-cover Gates.
Chambers is the type of guy who can jump over people and snag the ball in traffic. Rivers needs a receiver like that. 10/16/2007 3:53:50 PM |

Nice move. With Eric Parker going on IR, they needed a veteran at WR. 10/16/2007 4:50:46 PM |

they should trade a 2010 5th round draft pick to the chargers and pick up Randy Moss - or at least put the offer on the table

^^^True. The Chargers don't have any one with as much experience dropping passes as Eric Parker. 10/17/2007 3:37:11 PM |

LOL, I guess when you watch only 1 Charger game all year and it happens to be their worst performance, your perception of the team gets skewed a little.
PS Eric Parker has great hands. The playoff game was an anomaly. Chris Chambers on the other hand... well, lets just say that he takes after TO sometimes. 10/17/2007 4:03:02 PM |

Parker actually caught 68.6% of passes thrown to him last year, placing 11th in the AFC.
That being said, I've seen him make ridiculous drops in more games than just last year's playoff debacle. 10/17/2007 4:09:09 PM |

You're confused, or you're full of shit.
According to NFL statistics, Parker dropped 2 passes during the regular season last year.
For comparison's sake, Chambers dropped 8 and TO dropped 17. 10/17/2007 4:14:40 PM |
DaveOT All American 11945 Posts user info edit post |
First, those aren't "NFL statistics," because the NFL doesn't keep track of drops.
Second, drops are an inherently subjective stat, because what one person interprets as being over- or underthrown might be considered a drop to another person. 10/17/2007 4:24:33 PM |
markgoal All American 15996 Posts user info edit post |
Parker may have been productive for periods, but he definitely had serious issues dropping passes for the last 1/3 or so of the regular season and playoffs. I actually watched most of the Chargers games last year. 10/17/2007 7:19:40 PM |

2004:66% 2005:71% 2006:69%
other 2006 catch%'s: steve smith 60% chad johnson 57% torry holt 52% larry fitzgerald: 62% marvin harrison: 64% reggie wayne: 63%
" |
then it was said...
Quote : | "those % mean almost nothing considering all those other recievers get thrown to about 10 times more per game" |
reply...
Quote : | " passes thrown to: Parker 2004: 71 2005: 80 2006: 70 =221
2006: steve smith:139 chad johnson:152 torry holt: 179 larry fitzgerald: 111 marvin harrison: 148 reggie wayne: 137
So, in a sample size larger than any of those receivers, parker has caught a higher % of balls thrown his way than those studs. I'm definitely not saying he's better than any of those WR's, but calling him "brick hands" and saying he won't be missed is misguided." |

just focus on the good part of all of this rather than comparing. chargers have just made a huge move. with a more passing game threat, LT will be even better, Rivers will be even better, and then we win the superbowl

In all seriousness, drop statistics, especially percentage dropped is one of the most worthless statistics in football, which is why it isn't officially kept. Different receivers can see a completely different set of passes thrown their way, depending on their offense, the routes they run, the throws their QB makes, coverage they see, their role, etc. We aren't talking about free throws here.
Example: Lets say Steve Smith catches 60% largely made of 30 yard passes or jump balls against a number one corner with safety help, LDT catches 90% of swing and screen passes thrown to him, and Eric Parker catches 70% on hitches and quick slants with the defense focusing on Gates and LDT. Who is the best receiver? Who has the best hands? Do those percentages mean anything at all? 10/18/2007 10:02:46 AM |

The excuse is that he's always had poor QB's throwing to him, and a shitty team, but those are some poor percentages.10/19/2007 7:20:06 AM |

^^Chambers runs deep routes. He stretches the field and also runs over the middle. Of course his catch % is gonna be lower than a possession receiver. He also opens things up for the guys underneath, because they have to put a safety on him.
This will benefit Rivers and LT the most, forcing teams to back off the LOS lest they get burned.

Obviously can't make a direct comparison between Moss and Chambers, but it does give some hope that Chambers might be better with laser vision QB play.

Quote : | "The bye-week work ended on a fun note, as a loose but crisp practice featured most players wearing jerseys from college or high school. While Rivers in his North Carolina State jersey and helmet and Shawne Merriman in his Maryland jersey and helmet were classic, the highlights were Antonio Gates in his Kent State basketball jersey and Clinton Hart in his baseball jersey from Central Florida Community College. Neither Gates nor Hart played college football.
Things got crazy after practice as several pairs of players faced off in 100-yard dashes. The long-anticipated Lorenzo Neal vs. Marcus McNeill race, in which Neal gave the much younger (and heavier) offensive tackle a 10-yard head start, was won easily by McNeill. Later, Antonio Cromartie affirmed his title as the team's fastest player by beating Cletis Gordon.
It got a little absurd when 350-pound defensive tackle Jamal Williams, limping slightly following Monday's arthroscopic surgery on both knees, told the speed-challenged Rivers, “I like me over you right now.”
The players are off until Monday.
Said Turner: “I think it's good to relax and step back a little bit.”" |
