black friday may help hd dvd
walmart has Xbox 360 with 5 bonus games for $279.92 and deals on cheap hd tvs...so people may add the add on with that cheap of a price. who knows. 11/15/2007 5:05:27 PM |

yeah, considering the best blu-ray black friday deal i've seen is still $380
but don't count on xbox360 buyers to fuel HD DVD, b/c it's probably a very very small amount that buy the add-on

^ I don't know about that. I would think the HD DVD add-on would make a great christmas present for someone in their early-mid teens (who already owns a 360). Back in 1998 (when I was 13), my brother and I spent $300 on a DVD player (and this was before they even sold DVDs in Wal-Mart). 11/15/2007 5:29:54 PM |

granted you had a bad experience I don't agree. I've been using my HD-DVD add on for the xbox and gave my girlfriend my stand alone A1 player. The add-on is so much faster and better. Picture quality is 1080p and it takes up less space. no over heating issues either11/15/2007 8:00:22 PM |

The 360 drive is definitely faster and not without it's perks.
However, given the questionable history of 360s, it might not be the best option if you want to reliably watch movies. Or if, like FanatiK you've got some hard-on for uncompressed sound which you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between anyway.
I will say though, the 360 remote is much nicer than the HD-A2 remote.

i still have my 360 from the 5am best buy line and it's working great with the hd dvd add on. just for what it's worth:
downstairs i have the xbox 360 with hd dvd add on and a 50" samsung plasma (720p). upstairs i have a toshiba a20 with a 32" sharp aquos 1080p.
i can't tell a difference between the two, watching hd dvds. if i stand a foot away from the screen i can, but more than 2 feet away and the picture quality looks the same. the 360 add on is insanely faster, but much louder in comparison. as long as you aren't watching a really quiet movie, you shouldn't notice it too much anyway. 11/15/2007 11:00:46 PM |

Stein buddy.... You've obviously never heard an uncompressed movie soundtrack on a good setup, otherwise you'd be singing its praises too. You shouldn't talk about things you don't know about.

Don't be a jackass man. I agree uncompressed audio tracks sound infinitely better.
and what he means by a decent system is one that was at least compared to others from small audio specific shops and not just some idiot who purchased the most expensive klipshe crap at best buy. 11/16/2007 11:00:31 AM |

A lot more depends on how well the track was mastered in the first place, during its original production, than on how the disk producers encode the audio track onto the disk. If you're going to play something like Chronos, which was originally mixed in IMAX-6, and has lots of quiet moments, and lots of grand moments, and you want to hear every nuance of every sound in its all-instrumental soundtrack... then yeah, lossless uncompressed is going to be so much better.
For any of your blockbuster movies, like 300, Transformers, or Live Free Or Die Hard... it really doesn't matter *IN MY OPINION*. These audio tracks aren't about hi-fidelity. They're about cranking it up to max, blow out ear drums with a 500w sub, and wow'ing your friends with how you can hear that jet fly across the room with your 5.1 surround. 11/16/2007 11:21:24 AM |

If I wanted to be a jackass I'd point out that studios record tracks specifically to be loud and play well on standard systems...those that contain 1bit DAC's made in china.

I know what firmware update you're talking about, I just don't know what this problem you keep talking about is. It's a serious question, why is it so hard for you to answer? You'll waste your time typing a "witty" (highly subjective) reply, but can't actually bring the info. You're silly.
And hey, if you can't hear the difference in clarity w/uncompressed audio, it's your loss really... not mine. I enjoy it. To each his own, I guess. 11/16/2007 12:27:31 PM |

The difference between uncompressed PCM and something like TrueHD or DTS-HD MA is negligible. Both of those are essentially just zip files for lossless audio anyway. The difference between those and bog standard Dolby Digital is huge. Anyone who argues otherwise is a nut.

So you think they continue to do that on disks that require $500 players and $2k tvs just to view in their native formats? (this isn't being a dick this is serious) i don't understand why they would continue to provide for low end audio when everything else in the system must be high end to reap the benefits of the format in the 1st place.
On my stereo i like to listen to #1 hd movies #2 Cds & dvd audio #3 flac digital files #4 Hd-tv #5 mp3s/wma (sometimes bumped up based on bit-rate)
and old records slide in there based off of how well they've been kept over the years. and each step is a very noticeable change in audio quality.
↑ please tell me not meridian.... have you listened to them its almost as much of a gimmick as the electrostatic stuff is. I mean i understand different strokes for different folks but the only way i'd spend that kind of money on digital speakers is if i were running the signal in the wall throughout the house and was worried about it picking up the 60hz hum from a/c power.

Eventually. The Omega Man is coming out on Blu-ray, but Warner released it on HD DVD a while ago. The studios don't always release old titles on both formats, and at the same time. For instance, New Line (a child of Warner) is releasing Hairspray on Blu-ray but not HD DVD, while they're releasing Pan's Labyrinth on both formats... and they're releasing Shoot 'Em Up on Blu-ray on January 1st but holding off on the HD DVD version until the worldwide theatrical run is done (HD DVDs don't have region locking, and are more populare in Europe) 11/16/2007 4:05:47 PM |
