The Defense once again gets the majority of the blame for this loss. The scheming is terrible. At some point you have to trust your personnel. If you get burned deep on a play so what. Archer plays a soft zone to try and keep the plays in front of the defense but the defensive backfield has terrible reaction speed. They let the offensive player make a move they are not aggressive. The DLine played great. Willie Young and AMC had great games. The defense can't get off the field it seems. They get them in 3rd and long and give up the first down. Something has to be done with the defense and Mike Archer. 10/16/2008 11:17:48 PM |

^and look at where they are at this year
we are so close it is crazy. we have good coaches. we just have to be patient for a couple of years while they get their players in and coach them up.
i was very encouraged by what i saw for the most part tonight. i don't really question one thing we did tonight schematically or otherwise. i am very excited about ncsu football in the near future. 10/16/2008 11:18:27 PM |

and this would help on deep balls how?? with our d this year our best bet is to make teams nickel and dime us down the field and hope they make a mistake on a very long drive. we simply don't have the personnel to match up for 60 minutes at this point. our scheme is the smartest and only thing we can do without better players. we have a few but not enough, esp. not in our secondary. our best 3 d players irving, cash, and young are all up front. let them try and get pressure and play soft behind, force some mistakes and take what you can get. we can't let other teams score quickly b/c we are not explosive enough to keep up.
our scheme and ideas are correct for our current situation.10/16/2008 11:21:21 PM |

First half on D was really really really good. They had double the amount of possesion as us and we had the lead for most of the first half.
It felt like Deja vu all over again with giving up the huuuuuuuuuge plays on 3rd and long. We did the same thing against BC too.
We need irving back bad. its not even funny 10/16/2008 11:23:37 PM |

Running game kept us in this game...which is a welcomed change. Unfortunately, defense couldn't make a stop on third down. Russell Wilson had a pretty bad game as well. At least 3 bad throws that would have been key completions. And please throw the ball away on 3rd and 5 with 3 mins left. That's JV high school football.

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me, but our student section sucks this year.
It blows my mind that people can be so absorbed with hitting beach balls that they can't get loud on defense and don't even seem to care when we have a third down in their red zone. 10/17/2008 12:10:22 AM |

that personal foul that lead to their first TD was crucial. AND i don't think we should have gone for it with 3 mins left and 3 timeouts left. punt that shit away..... once they scored their last FG it was out of reach.

I think what makes me more upset about this game is that we were in position to win. We outplayed them in every aspect of the game except tackling.
I went in expecting to lose, but when you put yourself in position to win, you have to start taking advantage.
If we stop them once or twice on 3rd and long before a score (we had SEVERAL opportunities on the FSU side of the field)...its a totally different ballgame. We were moving the ball on offense, we just didn't get enough opportunities. 10/17/2008 12:17:53 AM |

that's what pisses me off so much, a lot of these close losses are just because the defense just rolls over and takes it in the ass 3rd down after 3rd down, teams can run the same passing play over and over again and net first downs almost whenever the want to, that or else we leave the qb wide open to run for it
I could tell that Cash was pissed too because he kept running his mouth and hitting the ground when they were grouped for the alma mater after the game
I mean after 4 years of the same shit you just reach a breaking point sometimes, can't wait for Wake Forest, I'm sure we'll manage to put up a surprising effort only to lose in the end again

If he doesn't start running some man coverage, especially on 3rd downs, we may as well give up the rest of the season.
I have never been more sick watching a defense constantly give up 5 yards, then not be able to tackle, so they give up 15-20 or more. I'd rather line up in press coverage right now and have them throw it over our heads all game long. At least we'd be trying something new. 10/17/2008 12:26:00 AM |

That's my observation. It looks like we are beginning to get a handle on our turnover problem. Despite a few calls we are looking better with regards to penalties. But man oh man, if our defense has them at 3rd and 15+ I am already angry because I know with a certainty that they will allow a play that not only nets the other team a first down, but also gives them an additional 5-10 yards on top of what they needed.
That's been the case for several games now. 3rd and 15? They pick up 24 yards. 3rd and 31? That's a shoe in... nope, we just gave them 45 yards. Etc.
Other than the defense I've seen some definite improvements. The defense seems to have taken a nose dive. Of course they're on the field for 40 minutes, but they are making the bad plays (or being poorly coached) long before any point where a decent defense would tire out.

I don't know what game you were watching, but look at these offensive statistics:
TOTAL OFFENSE PLAYS-YARDS FSU: 80-392, NC State: 47-338
looks to me like we did pretty well on offense. If we get to run the same 80 plays we're sitting pretty late in the game. The problem was that we gave up too many 3rd and longs because why?
you guessed it...we couldn't tackle. I noticed more times than not where we were in position to make the play and just couldn't wrap up...which is why I made that original comment.10/17/2008 8:21:51 AM |

I Disagree for the most part. Some of those balls early that he missed were a tad of but not a JV play or JV arm. He put more zip on the ball this game than he ever has. That TD pass was perfect. He used the open pace on floated it in so nicely. His sense to get out of the pocket and run is terrific.
Yes, that 3rd and 5 sucked and he should have just chucked it, but that's just some inexperience. Don't give up on this guy. He went 13 for 25 for 181 yards. Several throws were just flat out dropped. He threw 2 TD's and threw 0 picks. All that said, whether you believe in qb rating or not gives him 139.22. Also, don't forget he ran 4 times for 33 yards.
Everybody should be excited. We have Wilson and with Glennon coming to play next year, we're going to have one of those two play, which is a good thing for the short term future of the program on offense.10/17/2008 8:49:40 AM |

I do not agree with this. The helmet to helmet hit called on State was a huge call that should not have been made. It was key play on FSU's 1st TD drive. Also I thought it was pretty interesting how suddenly after Bowden cried to the refs about the holding calls at halftime, the FSU line suddenly stopped holding and NC State started racking up the penalty calls.
Either way we still should have been able to overcome the refs in the 2nd half, but we could not tackle, could not stop 3rd down conversions by FSU, and we lost the special teams battle (FSU's kicker for Heisman, not able to down a punt with 9 guys on the ball, Graham tackled by the kicker).10/17/2008 9:00:07 AM |

Hey dudes, at least we're not getting blown out and throwing interceptions for touchdowns anymore. Baby steps!
Wilson was solid once again. He really only made one bad mistake the whole game, which was taking the sack on the 3rd and 5. And then that mistake was magnified by our coaching staff not immediately sending the punt team out and saving all 3 time outs for defense.

Until we can find a way to stop someone on three straight downs and wrap up, it will be a long season. I hope we face the bad Maryland team next week. Offense needs to control the ball more, but it seems that we only score on quick drives.
The card stunt was awesome, but the aftermath didn't help anything. Among the people hit on the sidelines where ESPN soundguy, FSU coaches and players, and a Raleigh police officer. 10/17/2008 10:25:11 AM |

Trying to keep things in perspective, did anyone really expect us to be better than 2-5 at this point. Looking at our schedule so far, before the season I would have said:
USC - L WM - W Clempson - L ECU - W USF - L BC - thought we might win if BC struggled without Matt Ryan - not the case, then L FSU - L
If we were 3-4 through 7 games, I would have been pleased before the start of the season. Seeing that we are 2-5 now, have played 6 teams that have/will be/are ranked, and have had 12 starters injured at some point this season, I guess I can't be too upset.
I will start getting upset though if we lose to Duke, or get embarrassed by any team left on the schedule especially UNC, UMD, or Miami because none of those teams should be able to blow us out.
Positives so far this season in my eyes:
1. Wilson - if he actually plays four years, he will be a stud by his junior/senior sesons. 2. TJ Graham - absolute playmaker if he can get any space. 3. Irving/Cash - future All ACC if they can stay healthy 4. A lot of young guys getting good experience - Bryan, Maddox, most of the secondary, etc. 5. Andre Brown - seems to be playing hard now. I feel bad though that he is a senior and will not go to a bowl once again.
Negatives:
1. Defensive schemes are inconsistent and predictable. We are too passive on 3rd downs, need to develop an attitude on defense. 2. Anthony Hill - big disappointment this year (last night's TD being the exception). Lots of dropped passes, overall lack of leadership. 3. Injuries - need to overhaul the strength and conditioning program if this continues. 4. Beck/Evans - how did these guys regress so much in the off season. They are even worse than last year. How is that possible in college especially when your OL has gotten better. 5. Some of the WRs have butter fingers.
Anyway this has been a frustrating season so far, but I'll keep supporting and hope we can beat the other NC schools. Next year, we better be bowling though.
