I figure if that dude wants to make some money by opening a bar in Chapel Hill, rather than open a hookah smoking bar, he might consider opening a pole smoking bar

Not take a shower? Are they banning the smell of sweat, piss, alcohol, pheromones, and cheap cologne/perfume, too?

I've never come home smelling like piss... What shitty bars do you go to? Or do you get so drunk you piss yourself?

Yeah, no bar ever smelled even the slightest bit like urine--I made it all up. So, you cool with all of the other smells?

I'm not trying to be shitty and I've never been a smoker. It just seems to me that bars should be allowed to be bars--and the ever-growing nanny state should butt out (pardon the pun).

I go to bars, not dance clubs. So there's not a lot of sweating going on. And I do not get too close to the one fat guy that sweats just sitting to smell like sweat. And if I come home smelling like cheap perfume and pheramones that means I've gotten close enough to a chick that it's worth it. Besides none of those smells attatch themselves to you clothes and skin like smoke.

and i am NOT stoked for tomorrow.
not in the slightest.

i guess its good this ban doesnt really effect me.

do you think we can get a ban on the guys and girls that wear a ton of cologne/ perfume?
that kills my sinuses and it happens relatively often in some places.

For years and years I wasn't a smoker, and even then smoke didn't bother me.

How big of a fucking pussy do you have to be for smoke to bother you?

people's "rights" will NEVER (never!) be protected in their entirety

so i'd just as soon they penalize people that aren't me...i don't particularly care about smokers or business owners that encourage smoking, since i am neither

let me make this very clear: your rights will NEVER be protected to the letter of the constitution since it is IMPOSSIBLE...the constitution is open to interpretation and we are a generation of whiny couch-and-computer revolutionaries...there's not a single one of you pussies that are going to do a DAMN thing but piss and moan on message boards...one or two of you might write a letter to your congressman, but the VAST majority of you that complain about shit like this are too fucking lazy or stupid to do anything of value in regards to getting something done about it

so laws like this will continue to be made and people like me, who "benefit" from them (in that they don't in any way inhibit my right to make dumb choices but instead actually make me more willing to do things i previously wouldn't have done) will laugh at you pussies who can't think of anything better to do than cry endlessly about the how unfair america is

I find it amazing that there's so much arguing going on about this ban involving the SMELL of smoke. It's not about the god damn smell, people. It's about LUNG CANCER.

Seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence that business sucks for a couple months and then it returns to normal.

I think after a century of inconveniencing the non smokers, the smokers need a century to go outside and do their death rattling.

When I'm standing in an aisle at the grocery store trying to decide what cereal I want I make sure to get out of someones way if I am blocking it and they are trying to get through. Smokers don't give a fuck if I have to suck on their poison or if it makes everyones clothes smell like funk. Seriously, get the fuck outside with your nasty ass habit.

Maybe southern smokers are rude as shit but it's absolutely standard for a smoker to ask permission to smoke around other people where I'm from

And how often do you see the non smokers wanting to be "that guy" in a bar, you know, where smoking should just be expected? Is it because non smokers are inherently less douchey because they are hooked on a something they can't break?

I don't think anyone is saying it ruins their night, no, we've been content to just put up with it for more or less our entire lives - including when we we're kids and our barely middle class parents took us to those little shitty diners with all the poor old white people drinking their coffee, smoking their cigs, railing on about the niggers, and praying to God the government didn't cut off their SS check.

My state congressman in PA, where we have ridiculous laws regarding alcohol and tobacco. It probably went into the trash, but it's one of the only ways I have to express my displeasure.

i'm glad they passed it. if i was going in somewhere where there was a lot of smoke, i'd just leave my jacket in the car so it wouldn't smell like it when i left. i just learned to deal, but didn't necessarily avoid the place.

i think some places will see increased business. plus they won't have to spend money on ash trays, smoke restorations, etc...

So yeah I guess going to a hookah bar to protest the ban would be like going to a bar to protest a drinking ban in grocery stores.

McDanger

the studies on secondhand smoke from Red Cross and American Lung Association site incessantly was actually thrown out because of a lack of firm evidence.

the results of the environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality in a prospective study of Californians do not support a causal relation between environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality, although they do not rule out a small effect and the association between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and coronary heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed.

I could talk about several more articles and studies, but what it comes down to is... well, just re-read McDanger's posts

LoneSnark posted this in another thread, but it looks like lung cancer is the only cancer that is actually rising in death incidences. It seems like there might be some fire where this smoke is coming from...

That red line in the first chart going from top left to bottom right sure does show an increase...

From the Cancer Statistics study for 2009, published by ACS: http://caonline.amcancersoc.org/cgi/content/full/59/4/225

Quote :
"Overall cancer incidence rates decreased in the most recent time period in both men (1.8% per year from 2001 to 2005) and women (0.6% per year from 1998 to 2005), largely because of decreases in the three major cancer sites in men (lung, prostate, and colon and rectum [colorectum]) and in two major cancer sites in women (breast and colorectum)."
