Golovko you are just trolling, congratulations on finding a single remote place that has AT&T coverage.
I actually leave my house on the weekends. I go skiing & traveling through the mountains quite regularly, all while on a MAJOR INTERSTATE. If you had GPS on your iPhone you'd know that you can use 3G all the time finding where to get gas & food, entertainment, etc.
Golovko, I assume you've just run out of excuses to result to such trivial and lame ass comebacks now. Good point. I don't typically need my cellphone when i go backpacking or camping (although edge does just fine for email/phone/texts/etc. I don't typically watch youtube videos while i'm hiking.
Although when i do want to use AT&Ts faster network i'm always in a 3g area. I can remember maybe twice in the last 5 years i've wanted 3g where there was edge. Both those times have been when i've been in the back seat of a car driving cross country, and it really wasn't a big deal. I travel internationally more than that.
Quote : | "If you had GPS on your iPhone you'd know that you can use 3G all the time finding where to get gas & food, entertainment, etc. " |
I use the GPS on my iphone on edge and it works just fine for all that, not to mention i have both TomTom and Navigon apps that don't even require data and have all the latest gas/food stops just like a dedicated gps unit built in. Too bad the droid requires data to use their turn-by-turn app, whereas the iphone doesn't. The droid doesn't even support apps that large.
V but he'd still be screwed in places where Verizon doesn't have coverage in the US and outside the US. Whereas with an iPhone as long as you have a dedicated GPS app you can find a McDonalds anywhere in the world without data as long as you have GPS reception.

But thanks to Apple Inc's iPhone and Amazon.com Inc's Kindle e-reader, AT&T is still forecast to have added 1.8 million net new customers in the last three months of 2009, above Verizon Wireless' 1.5 million, according to the average estimate from four analysts polled by Reuters.
Nonetheless, that is an improvement for Verizon from the third quarter, when AT&T's 2 million additions far outpaced the 1.2 million at Verizon Wireless, a unit of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc. " |

the AT&T criticism is not a local minority, simply put, iPhone users are stuck in contract and/or don't want to drop the device simply because of the coverage or service.
read any news article lately about Apple & AT&T, it's ALL OVER talking about how iPhone users (read: not other people) say how bad their service is.
questions come up from Apple investors wondering if any network improvements are coming from AT&T.
clearly people are concerned.

I was trying to make a connection about coverage area/quality of network, and users. I'm simply saying despite what the minority of people think about AT&T (coverage/dropped calls/whatever) people are still switching to AT&T and getting smart phones more so than to Verizon. Just because a few people complain about AT&T sucking doesn't mean the majority of people think AT&T sucks. Just like you were saying earlier, just because the majority of people use 3g where they work and live doesn't mean everyone does (sarcasm). But you get the point.
^and again because EVERYONE goes to events like CES all the time. Yes a select few have issues like at big events. Benefits still outweigh the rare occasion when you can't tweet. (They didn't have wifi at CES???)
^still a minority. Go ask 50 people in the street if their iPhone service sucks. I bet you more than half will say it doesn't. No one complains about iPhone service except on rare occasion, but more so than Verizon which is why it makes the news.

ok, first of all that research was based on the last 3 months.
the Droid only came out 2 months ago, along with now the Palm Pre & Palm Pixi (this month), along with the HTC Eris. Verizon in the last 2 months has quadrupled their smartphone offering. my guess is come Q2 2010 those numbers will change.

^^one other problem with your correlation is that it does not specify who is switching from where. are those 1 million new subscribers coming from Sprint? are they coming from Verizon? for all we know 90% of the new Verizon subscribers could be coming from AT&T, while 60% of AT&T new subscribers are just new cell phone users.
it DOESN'T tell the whole story. you can't just say the numbers are up so there must not be a problem.

There is only 1 report indicating this, that's being rehashed by the rest of the Internet, so I wouldn't be so sure this is the case.
And the T-Mobile band supposedly not being supported by the chipset isn't binding it to ATT. The iPad, unquestionably, is not bound to ATT, I don't see how you could argue otherwise.
The fact that ATT currently might be the best way to get an iPad is a different story.2/1/2010 4:51:57 PM |

^^sure as hell beats picking a carrier based on what phone they offer.
^based on what's announced, of course that can always change.
Quote : | "UPDATE: we have had some questions on the compatibility of the iPad with T-Mobile. To clarify: the announced specs of the iPad do not include support for the 1.7Ghz/2.1Ghz AWS standard that T-Mobile uses for their 3G network in the USA. However, it should be compatiable with the (non-3D) GPRS/EDGE network that T-Mobile also offers. So, it appears that you can connect an iPad to the T-Mobile network, but it will not get a 3G connection, and will run much slower than the AT&T or other GSM networks. This is, of course, assuming that the specs of the iPad do not change between now and product availability. " |

I'm on AT&T because I've been on a family plan on AT&T. I pay $45/month for unlimited data/text and roll over minutes. To each his own, but in my case what I'm paying and the fact that maybe once a month I might not be able to get my push email at a football game far outweighs getting a worse phone, halfing my download speeds, having almost no international coverage, and paying twice as much on Verizon. That's where I'm coming from. 2/1/2010 4:58:50 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
^^well you know i do pay them for a service... and since that's 90% of the cost incurred over 2 years, it's really the logical choice.
^it's all about what you use most. i'd say if you look at the number of people that max out their bandwidth, the number of people that tether, and the number of people that spend a MAJORITY of their time overseas, it's still in the minority. if GSM was really needed for a majority of people then CDMA wouldn't have the most subscribers in the U.S.
also with LTE coming to BOTH Verizon & AT&T, when 4G gets rolled out the speed differences will be nil.

^^from the comments: "as I said in the story, the incompatibility is with the T-Mobile 3G network, which uses frequencies of 1.7 and 2.1Ghz. The iPad would work with T-Mobile on their GPRS and edge network, but not with 3G. The same problem occurs with the iPhone, so it is no surprise that the specs are identical."

I can't imagine handwriting recognition being more efficient or faster than the touch keyboard.

for the record i completely agree with Prospero. AT&T has a lot of work to do and a lot of people have shitty AT&T service. I was simply stating that I'm one of the lucky ones that is happy with AT&T service and for me it's better than Verizon. The biggest reason being I pay half what I would pay on Verizon because I stayed on a family plan.2/1/2010 6:38:38 PM |
