Damn, this is some bullshit.
http://charlotte.cbslocal.com/2014/03/04/jay-bilas/
Quote : | "As UNC stays hot on their ACC win streak, ESPN commentator Jay Bilas called into “The Drive” to talk about the ACC’s best teams and other hot basketball topics as the last week of the regular conference season comes to a close. Comparing the current North Carolina team to the championship 2009 team, Bilas says that the ’09 team was heavy on offense and had a margin of error so that their defense didn’t have to be as strong. “This team this year has to pay attention to every detail,” says Bilas. “And they’ve done that after a difficult start…they’ve embraced it, and it’s been fun to watch because they’ve been so resilient.” When Marc James of “The Drive” asks Bilas if this UNC team has peaked too early, he says that “any team can get better (or worse)” but there is no way of knowing how well a team will play at the end of the season. “It’s like saying if you make five birdies in the first five holes, did you peak too early. You can take five birdies whenever you can get them.” If Jay Bilas had to pick the ACC Player of the Year right now, he would pick either UNC’s Marcus Paige or Duke’s Jabari Parker. “I don’t know who you vote for. Parker’s the better player, but I don’t know if he’s had the better year,” says Bilas, who only looks at the ACC conference schedule wins and losses to determine his vote. “Paige has been spectacular in the league, and I don’t think there has been a more valuable player.” Both players he thinks should be 1st team all-ACC. And speaking of the ACC tournament, he says that this year’s tournament doesn’t have a lot of great match-ups to watch in the first opening days. Bilas imagines an ACC tournament that is “highly contested” to get in to, mainly consisting of 8 or 12 teams with the best records. Then, you make it a hot ticket item to go watch it like in a New York City where the semi-finals are played on Friday and the finals on Saturday. And if you get the perrenial good ACC basketball teams in, he thinks it’d be “better than the Final Four.” “Greensboro is terrific…it’s very nice…a lot of history there. It ain’t Madison Square Garden.” For what’s best for the ACC conference and how well the Big East tournament played out, he says that he would put it up at MSG every year. But if there are other issues, then he feels that they should play there every five years.." |

I noticed that too and was about to be all WTF about it, but if you listen to the accompanying audio, that's not what he says. It was a misquote. He was saying he only looks at ACC games to determine POY, not the full season.

after the loss last night, i don't see how Parker could even be considered anymore. his team is 4th in the conference and he's not playing as well as he was earlier this season. i think it's down to Warren or Paige - best case scenario for Warren is that he has another 20+ point game for us in a win vs. BC while Paige struggles in a loss to Duke. 3/6/2014 2:50:50 PM |

When do they announce POY? I'm kind of hoping it leaks that TJ loses a close vote with bullshit reasons like "Needs to be on a Tournament team" and then he goes into full eff you Randolph Childress mode in Greensboro. 3/6/2014 2:59:05 PM |

I remember they announced Green won it right before we played them in the 1st round of the ACC Tourney last year. So I'd say we'll know something by this time next week.
One thing to remember is that Parker leads the league in rebounds IIRC. Factor that in with his scoring (and his hype), and it might be hard for TJ to overcome.
Not saying TJ shouldn't win -- anyone who's watching knows he should -- but Parker winning wouldn't be surprising at all. 3/6/2014 3:05:38 PM |

Just the fact that he leads the ACC in scoring and fg% is very impressive (so impressive that only two guys have ever done it before, who were Horace Grant and Tim Duncan, actual big guys who probably got most of their points close to the basket) 3/6/2014 3:08:46 PM |

That blows. What time is it over?
Kinda sucks that UNC and Duke get to fight it out primetime Saturday night with those performances being fresh on voters' minds, and TJ's last game won't matter.
Interesting article imo: http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/2014/3/5/5472976/not-just-young-at-heart

There is zero chance that TJ wins ACC POY. You guys will save yourself a lot of stress and heartache if you just accept that now. He deserves it. He is hands-down the best player in the league this year, but it's not happening. Let's just hope he wins ACC Tournament MVP after putting us on his back and taking us to the dance. 3/6/2014 3:12:10 PM |

From the above article:
Quote : | "The most interesting race may be for ACC Player of the Year. The preseason media pick was Syracuse senior C.J. Fair. Second was Virginia senior Joe Harris. Neither are apt to win.
The leading candidates appear to be Parker, Ennis, UNC's Marcus Paige and N.C. State's T.J. Warren, the league's premier scorer. (Paige is most deserving, considering what he means to his top-tier team.) UVa's Malcolm Brogdon stands a very outside chance because he's the leading offensive player on the ACC's leading team -- point production being a great media seducer.
Interestingly, if either Ennis or Parker win the award as the ACC's POY, they will become the first freshman so honored since first-year collegians became eligible for varsity competition in 1972-73.
In fact, only six underclassmen in the previous 60 years were voted Player of the Year, and that includes a tie in 2001. Obviously all were sophomores. Two - David Thompson and Ralph Sampson - also won the award as juniors and seniors and are among the ACC's greatest all-time players." |

i think paige will probably win it, as he has been pretty great this season in conference play. that plus their long ass winning streak will probably be enough for him, considering how many voters want to vote for teams that win.
parker has really trailed off the last little bit of the season and that should hurt him, but the national media (ESPN) push for him (and all the other freshmen this year - randle, embiid, wiggins, etc) has been ridiculous. that hype will probably get him more votes than he deserves. 3/6/2014 3:55:13 PM |

Dick Vitale has Warren as his Player of the Year:
Quote : | " PLAYER OF THE YEAR: T.J. Warren, NC State COACH OF THE YEAR: Tony Bennett, Virginia DIAPER DANDY OF THE YEAR: Jabari Parker, Duke
I went with Warren over C.J. Fair and Tyler Ennis of Syracuse, Marcus Paige of North Carolina and Parker. It was not an easy call. Warren has meant so much to a Wolfpack team that is trying to earn a berth in the Big Dance. Bennett as Coach of the Year was easier. Parker edged Ennis as Diaper Dandy. " |
